Ross James on finding the Dead, teaming with Phil Lesh...

good read.

seems like a nice guy. also seems really lucky to move to the bay area in 2010 and somehow walking into the gig...

also seems smart to get in on the business side. he's an o.k. guitar player, but as mentioned a million times, kinda hard to pay to watch someone learn gd music...now i can see if he was some derek trucks ripper or something...but.

Paid to watch someone learn how to play slide a few times, then again he was sharing a stage with Jerry Garcia...

well played Esse ( so to speak ) - better than a few Wang Dang Doodle's i saw....

Ross Mo F'n James!

I talked with Ross briefly after the TXR show Sunday where he and the Dickenson bros. played w Phil.

He agreed with me that  Unbroken Chain really took off that night.

That article shed a little light on how busy he's been at TXR and with Phil in general.

A good read.

RMFJ kicked ass the one time I saw him.

You can not deny that Phil enjoys playing with him.  I like the team!

Ross is a good guy and a very good guitar player.

Funny how so many of this crowd seem to think only three or four guitar players are "good enough" to play with Phil.

It's just a little rock 'n roll.

And often a little bit more.

I hear what you are saying, Turtle.

That being said, I had a complete blast last night watching Phil and the kids play in the bar.  Phil was Phil...and he held my attention throughout.

However, the two youngsters on the Telecasters were holding their own.  Neither were of the pedigree of those great guitarists that we all now and love; but, through my bleary eyes, they had been steeped long and thoroughly enough in Phil's presentation of Dead jammin' that they knew the language, and participated in the musical convewrsation in their own, natural (twangy) way.  Second set was truly a musical/rhythmic pleasure, with great teamwork and some good morphs, especially during the New Speedway>TOO>Wharf Rat.  And to UBC wasn't bad either, though it seemed only natural that they could drop into a GDTRFB at any time (they didn't).

Not sure whether or not I would jump headfirst into a $77 year gig (I didn't do it for recently advertised show), but if Phil, well into his late 70's wants to play with his son and these other young dudes, count me in.

As Lance says,....Well you know what he says^^^^  wink

BTW: It was great to see you at the show, Buddy.

I enjoyed the 4 family band shows I saw this month and agree, the kids hold their own. That Speedway> TOO>Rat>UBC segment on a Wednesday was great.

Have fun and go to the show!

>>>pay to watch someone learn to play GD music...

You mean like paying to watch Bob learn to play slide?

Not quite a fair comparison.  Bob was simply attempting to assimilate a new playing technique into an already established genre.  Ross was attempting to learn the whole genre.

He sounds like a nice guy, but I still don't find a lot that is appealing about his playing.

I like what they are doing, Ross "MF" James has intrigued me from the start and Phil is wise to have Brian, Ross and others involved in all aspects of his biz.

With Phil as Mentor, quality performances of the Grateful Dead catalogue will continue long after the maestro is no longer performing.

Unlike the barn, TXR has become an incubator for many good times to come

"The power and the glory"

if he don't make it as a guitarist i think robbie may be retiring soon...........

Weir learned slide?

Weir's slide playing in 78 was rough on everyone...

There are zoners who play better than Ross James.

least deserved "Motherfucking" middle name ever.

not really what i'm saying. but for $79? c'mon now.....

this is no slight. dude just got hella lucky basically walking into this gig.  shit there's a LOTTA good guitar players out there.

"Weir learned slide?"

He shoots...he scores!!!!!
