>>>>They rarely ever discuss Chicago and its daily violence.
I agree that the day-to-day violence in communities of color is a problem on a magnitude much greater than all the random mass shootings combined. Further agree that it doesn't get the attention it deserves. This is probably for a number of reasons such as:
* It's black people getting killed. A story about one young attractive white woman murdered while jogging is going to get far more clicks than dozens and dozens of stories about black, intercity kids getting killed or crippled.
* It's black people doing most of the killing. Calling it out can be perceived as racist.
* It's largely not random. Gangs shooting up other gangs. If you don't go down to the ghetto and get involved in that sort of thing, its not going to affect you. Random violence, on the other hand, strikes fear in middle America and sells newsprint (or I guess gets clicks in today's parlance).
* It's largely committed with handguns. The stories don't fit into the media's fascination with large capacity, high powered rifles that feature prominently in many random shootings but play little role in the type of day-to-day violence that kills far more people annually.
Saw Chi-Raq recently. Interesting Spike Lee movie that doesn't pull any punches on the problem of gang violence in Chicago's black community.
We’ve discussed the problem in Chicago in a bunch of these gun debate threads. It’s nice that you care so much about the black community. It usually starts with someone saying something stupid like Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the country. Then it’s pointed out that’s not true and Indiana has very weak gun laws and it’s right next door.
^^^It’s nice that you care so much about the black community
Thanks! I grew up in a very mixed community.
^^^Basically we need more federal gun regulations.
>>Wow ! How are "more federal regulations" going to help Chicago?
Well... possibly, Chicago gangbangers could turn to each other and say, "Dude"....did you hear? There is a new federal gun regulation in place ! Let's put our guns down and respect!
They should have to be registered and the registered owner should be liable if their gun is used in a crime. Guns should also be required to be properly stored to deter theft and unauthorized access to them. The government should do a nationwide buyback program as well.
>>>>>Do you think the gangbangers will turn them in?
No. What’s wrong with making it harder for them to acquire new guns?
There is a huge illegal gun sales problem. It’s not like the gangs in Chicago aren’t always looking for more guns because they already have enough.
Mulemuzik, we seem to have more threads about workplace and mass shootings than individual ones. Aren't the killings in Chicago that anti-gun control people often bring up as an argument in discussions of gun violence and control more individual in nature?
So you don’t have any good suggestions? My one pistol is secured and won’t be used in any crimes or accidental shootings either. I’d be happy to register it with the Federal government though.
Why did you edit your post? What are your solutions for the violence in Chicago other than me turning in my pistol? It seems my solutions are more measured and thought out with a greater chance of success than your suggestion.
Wisconsin is also a place that lots of guns come from that are used in gun violence in Chicago.
You might want to learn WHY Chicago is this way if you really care about black people killing each other....it's because of the segregation policies which dominated city life there for well over 100 years.
I took this photo a few nights ago and was going to post it in the "Gun shots in your neighborhood" thread.
Alex was shot and killed near his house in August 2016.
I didn't know him, but I think about him just about every night when I go for my walk to San Pablo Park.
I'm bummed when anyone is killed by a gun (yes, even bad guys who are actively trying to kill others)
And I'm also generally relieved when I see that not everyone who is shot is killed; though, I imagine that these survivors are literally and figuratively scarred for life, as flesh and bones have been pierced, ripped and broken by bullets.
7 years ago my friend’s 19 year old daughter was gunned down while sitting in a car with friends. She did not know the trio of gang members that shot up the vehicle. The trial is just starting and two of the gang members involved have yet to be identified and apprehended. Her friend had purchased a used car that formerly belonged to a gang member. It sucks that guns are so easily available and this family is dealing with this lifelong trauma. People need to complete more paperwork and jump though more hoops to purchase a car than a gun. It’s fucked up. And yes, some people buy cars and guns on the black market, but tightening the rules governing gun ownership are still necessary.
>> tightening the rules governing gun ownership are still necessary.
How is tightening the rules of gun ownership going to stop gang shootings? Gangsters buy illegal guns, carry them illegally, and shoot people illegally. They don't give a shit about your existing or proposed laws.
and it obviously would reduce the number of ‘illegal’ guns in circulation.
also, requiring all guns to be ‘smart guns’ with fingerprint locks would help. Similar to smart phone technology. Only the registered, licensed owner could use it and would reduce theft and black market sales.

Timmy, you are a firm advocate for implementing a nationwide firearm registry, yet, you have an unlicensed and unregistered pistol in the State of California. Incredible... is that not the height of hypocrisy? Judith might want to rethink her statement, "I agree with Mr. Hoover 100%".
That sure is a funny picture Ender posted. Hey Timmy, just a thought, owning a firearm is a big responsibility. Have you thought about attending a Firearm Safety course? Also, you might want to practice what you preach and consider getting that pistol registered.
Without even looking it up in gonna guess CA has exemptions for old firearms, no?
