Known Flaws
d1t7 burst @ 1:29
d3t1 has some static from a bad connection
Interesting enough from me, not many, and I've seen just about all those listed above.
It takes A LOT to make a solo performance truly resonate with me.
Generally I really like musical conversation, but I would say a few solo acts who have really worked for me in the past and who I'd consider/would definitely see again...
Neil Young
Ryan Adams
Cat Power
Emmylou Harris
Ani DeFranco
Peter Rowan
Kieth Jarrett
Charles Lloyd
Joshua Redman
I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting, but that's who comes to mind right away.
As an aside, I'm seeing Trey solo this Saturday in Oakland, but I'm only going because a good friend bought the tickets and I didn't want to tell him I didn't want to go. I'm sure it will be fine but I'm not expecting to be "drawn in" the way I am when multiple people are playing together.
Maybe he'll surprise me. It wouldn't be the first time.
Ya, that' s one of the reasons i mentioned him, as i had seen recently that he d be at Toads Place on Dec. 22....i cant go that night, but, he has at least 3 other Ny area shows in next month or so, i may have to get out to see him. I havent seen him in ages. I prob have seen him around 40x, (an agency i worked at for awhile booked him etc) and he is def one of my all time favorite comedians to see live. The fact that he is a concert pianist, and that some of the "songs" you ll hear on any given night will be w topics taken right out of that days headlines separate him (let alone just how filthy raunchy he is) from others.
If you' ve never seen him, and he s in your area.....
I've seen 75% of those listed and they all fall flat. Neil Young -- drunk and sloppy, Elton -- needed that bald percussion guy to make it interesting, Dylan -- really?, Cat Power -- ummm, Keller is a clown....
I guess there's two ways to interpret that title...I thought it was a compilation of great solo performances, if we're discussing "the" best solo performance...it would have to be Garcia acoustic circa '82
>>>>>>I guess there's two ways to interpret that title...I thought it was a compilation of great solo performances, if we're discussing "the" best solo performance...it would have to be Garcia acoustic circa '82
He only played one solo show and it was just okay.
I hope this doesn't include that thing with the laptop, which was kinda weak. I didn't catch the whole set, which marked me as lucky in the eyes of those who did.
When Zappa sits on that stool there is nothing like it, great call
i have only seen him sit on the stool with a band backing him, but he did drink some coffe and smoked a cigarette while on the stool and that was really special . The show was in the round so you could see it from all angles, great night of music.
The Bruce Springsteen solo tours, both Ghost of Tom Joad and the Devils and Dust tours, were some of the finest solo performances I have witnessed. While Springsteen might not be a guitar virtuoso, there is no denying that he is a consummate performer. I am sure that those who haven't seen him solo will agree after they see the upcoming Netflix release of his Broadway show on Dec 15th. Although he put out a statement that there will not be an E Street Band tour in 2019, I am hoping with his upcoming solo record that he hits the road solo again next year.
Agreed on Danny. That guy can get a room up grooving with just five banjo strings. A regular in these parts.
>>>>if anybody says Keller Williams I hope we can laugh them off the board like the good old days
I will bite. Seen Keller about a dozen times - four with a band and eight doing the looping stuff. Despite the naysayers, I have to say it has been fresh and entertaining each time. Although there are a lot of music greats listed above and I have seen many of them, they usually have quiet, respectful, stay in their seat crowds when playing solo.
Keller, by contrast, gets the kids up and grooving hard like there isn't a tomorrow. Haven't seen any other single person performance play groovy, hippie dance party music like he does. It might be silly at times, but its effective and fun.
