What's in your winter survival kit?

Forums:

Electricity just went out temporarily, reminding me to check the winter survival kit.

I've got enough propane to heat stuff on the grill and firewood to last a few days. Guessing I need more batteries and water. Lighters.

What do you have in your "oh shit -- power's out" stash?

(I'm not talking prepper apocalyptic stuff like extra ammo - just supplies to survive a few days without power in the suburbs. Anything more and I've got a Subaru with a big gas tank.)

Kerosene lamps.

Cannabis.

I have food and water for about a month.

Generator to meet emergency power needs.

Where I live, we're always susceptible to being either locked in or out for an extended period of time due to avalanches blocking the only road in.   It's only happened to me once in 13 years, but was trapped for a few days.   It was actually very cool, even though I had a house guest who was visiting and was also trapped with me.  He wound up taking it upon himself to procure the last of my vodka.   I'm not a drinker and could've cared less in reality, but found it to be interesting after inquiring why didn't he just "ask" me and his response was that I might have said no.   It didn't take long for me to start routing for an end  to siege & his departure.

Ever since then, I've made a point of always having a lot of canned food on hand.  Over the years have learned how to rotate so as expiration is mitigated; likewise, the older cans (but still within "cutoff") were earmarked for Food Conscious Alliance ... poster trades at shows.

Other than than food, water, and heat (firewood):   a french press comes in handy and a generator (extra gas) is an added bonus.

My girlfriend and I have been geeking out on prepper shit for a while, so I think we are all set.   Plenty of stockpiled food, firewood, emegency supplies, and three 150 gallon rain barrels (although water is not a problem in Oregon winters).  Got her walkie talkies for X-Mas so we can still communicate when cell service goes down.

a jacket.

honda 3000, guns and a couple pounds of weed?

>>>>>>and could've cared less in reality,

how much less less could you have cared?

i pack ten of those portable phone chargers so I can phone zone. I dont want to miss a single post.

oh and jerky, lots of jerky  and ooh, one of those handcrank radios. Few cans of beans. And a few bitcoin for good measure.

I've always had camping equipment, including propane stoves, heaters and lanterns, but when the '89 Loma quake hit (just a few miles from us), we lost power in the county for nearly a week.  And since the 2 main Hwys (1 and 17) were both damaged/closed, the big chain grocery stores could not get supplies so they simply closed.  Of course the ATMs/credit card machines didn't work either, so unless you already had some cash on hand (which very few did), getting what little food was left at the independent markets/convenience stores was not going to happen.

Luckily for some of us, the locally owned health food store across from where I work (now called New Leaf, but no longer locally owned) allowed us to buy one bag of groceries each and pay by check (that they had no way of verifying, which was very nice of them).

So I learned that it's a pretty good idea to keep some extra vittles around for just such an occurrence.

And whenever I'm traveling in areas where it's possible to become stranded in my car by snow, I bring a down sleeping bag and some extra food/water to ride it out.
