The restaurant should pay for the cleaning of the coat out of responsibility in my opinion and also comp some or all of the meal as a means of good will towards the customer and to send the young lady home with something positive to say about the place amid a pretty crappy thing to have happen.
I had a waiter burn a hole in my coat once. Lighting a candle with a long match and set the match on a rolling server tray, fell onto by coat. They insisted on comping me and paying for the coat...kind of awkward, but the right thing to do.
Feel sorry for the young lady. My feeling it's tacky to ask the place to take something of your check, but it's equally tacky for the place not to.<<<
While it might be "technically tacky" to ask a restaurant to directly adjust the check specifically, I don't believe it's tacky to hint for an acknowledgment of responsibility ... and let them proceed from that point.
Happened a few times in my career as a manager...we always, always, offered to pay for cleaning...if it was me managing, id also comp either a round of drinks or desserts for table depending on which i thought theyd enjoy more....also, one thing a good restaurant should always do, whenever there is ANY issue where its required that a manager show up at table etc....its a great "habit" to also give the main victim at table (sir dirty coat) , a business card, with my name on it, that ive hand written a note on card saying "complimentary dessert upon next visit"
That last act accomplishes alot...the customer now has another copy of my name and phone number, and although we are comping menu items, and washing his coat, what we really want is for him to leave happy (or at least not irate etc), and to RETURN. A good manager will take care of all the above....
Oh, and ya, i dropped a steak knife into a guys lap the first table i ever bussed in my life....lol...it only goes downhill from there....(my career, not the knife)

Had a "free desert" comp blow up into a minor issue when I ate out with my dad at a restaurant where the manager pre-emptively asked if we'd be willing to switch tables after we had already been seated (might have just ordered and had bread put on the table) .... and for moving he'd give us a free desert. When we received the check, there was a charge for one desert. So, we asked the waiter why we were charged after the manager had made the offer for a free desert ... who replied that it was for only one desert and since we had each ordered a desert, we would be charged for one instead of two. Normally, we don't ever order deserts, so we weren't having any of that "explanation" ... and ultimately they relented, perhaps after realizing I was a local.
Had a busboy spill BBQ sauce at a Ruby Tuesdays on me. From my arm shirt pants and down my leg and on my shoes. We had just ordered our food.
I went to the bathroom for a whore bath in the sink.
Sat down ate entire dinner and no one came by for anything. I was expecting an apology.
I said something to the waitress when she brought me my bill and she said "your probably looking for a free meal and I am not giving any of that"
I asked for the manager and his attitude was even worse.
I told them all to fuck off and paid my bill with cash and leaving about a .12 cent tip.
I am not a bitcher or a complainer but I was shocked I did not get an apology. If they did it would all be over. I am NEVER looking for a free handout.
I can deal with accidents. I can't deal with stupidity or just the general lack of caring -- 'yeah, fuck off you'll tip me anyway, i'm entitled to it'.
The one ive been getting lately from the front of the house is: 'The chef worked 746 hours this week, that's why your meal is wrong.'
Rule #2...dont give customer "reason" the knife is in their lap etc...just tell them how youre gonna fix the freakin problem....nobody wants to hear "well, three ppl called out sick, and my boyfriend was late picking up the baby, and so, we opened the back door late, so , the grill hasnt come up to temp, and the new cook sux, so, basically , ya, like thats why your steak looks like a freak show"....just tell them, "we fucked up, gimme ten minutes, and ill get ya a new steak, enjoy a cpl beers on me while ya waiting"...end of story....end of problem....

I once dumped 4 strawberry daiquiris on a guy in a suit. Whipped cream and a cherry on top.
Stupid top heavy tulip glasses. Difficult to balance when taking one off the tray. Whoops.
Manager comped their meal and offered to pay for cleaning. They didn’t tip me.
