^ The quote was actually "after Eugene", I was in the audience when Phil made that statement, kind of a funny story, I was hitchhiking in Wyoming, this guy gave me a lift and was telling me a story about either Bob Dylan giving him a leather jacket, or him giving Bob Dylan a leather jacket, I forget...anyways he drops me off at this truck stop in the middle of nowhere and there's a VW bus being hooked up to a tow truck, so I walk over to the guys standing beside the Volkswagen and ask if by chance they might be headed to Cal Expo, which they were.
This would never happen these days, but the tow truck driver allowed us to ride in the bus which was hooked up facing backwards, the two guys who were from New York had a water bong, so we're pulling tubes facing east as the sun was setting on the I-80 for like 175 miles or so all the way to the dealership in Salt Lake City...we ended up traveling together for the entire west coast swing, picking his friend up at the Eugene airport, staying at the Eugene Hilton for the two nights at Autzen.
When Phil stepped up to the microphone and made that declaration it was quite the moment.
I don't recall having noticed, I was at the Dark Star bust-out in Hampton...that '90 west coast run was really special, we stopped in San Francisco before Shoreline, it was the first time I tried my hand at busking, but I succeeded in the endeavor to the point at which I could afford a slice of Escape from New York Pizza on Haight Street.
"Which set of shows did you like the most cal expo, shoreline or autzen?"
They were all spectacular, I might say Eugene, I fell in love with Eugene, a buddy of mine got married during intermission on June 24th, so that was pretty special. Supposedly the band knew about it, which is why they opened the 2nd set with Foolish Heart > Women 'R Smarter...that was the story, I tend to believe it was true.
WOW. It seems I had forgotten just how magical it really was back then. I am just getting around to watching this and am really enjoying the nostalgia. It was 30 yrs ago.
Half way through, I hope they covered a west coast show or two.
I'm about half way through and am enjoying it. I was a lot vendor during those years (and before) and even though I was only in the west, I had conversations with the same people (without the eastern accents). Youth... confidence, fun on the road, their lives were mostly great. I think the filmmaker got what there was.
Love the musical interludes. Thanks for the link, DJ Easy Wind.

I enjoyed that last evening. 90 minute ride home from NYC required coffee. Watched whilst sipping whiskey and baking to mellow out

Actually the interviewees
Actually the interviewees were pretty lame. Especially that one bozo they kept going back to.
The guy that made this video stumbled his way to actually capturing a little bit of what it was all about.
Brought back a lot of fond memories(and mammaries for that matter).
Wish he had included some west coast shows though.
