We did this entire run. One night on the rail, next night behind the stage. They had started putting speakers facing back and we took advantage of the good sound and open seating.
My ongoing theory is that Garcia's shorter quaffed hair style was responsible for the lack of more exploratory jamming in 1988. Like a Lego helmet, too unyielding.
When he let the lion's mane out in '89 things started to open up big time.
In arenas that had seats behind the stage they had rear facing speakers earlier than that. I recorded off of the rear facing speakers in St. Paul both in 81 and 82 and the sound behind the stage was great. When there would be an opportunity to play the audience tapes for Healy, he would ask about the location and equipment. Healy knew how to dial in the sound so that you got the very best possible sound no matter where you sat.
"Healy knew how to dial in the sound so that you got the very best possible sound no matter where you sat."
Usually this is true, but the reason I specifically remembered the '85 date for this was an incident I had at the fall Brenden Byrne run. I had seats behind the stage for both shows and for the first minute of each set the sound was incredible, then the speakers were either cut off entirely or turned down dramatically. I assumed that Healy was experiencing bounce back out front and had to cut them because of that, but it was really frustrating.
Hartford '88 was probably the weakest 3-night run I ever saw.
2 Don't Ease Me In set-closers in a row?>>>
How about Peter in the ballad slot 2 shows in a row? At least the 3rd Hartford was well played.
Weakest 3 night stand I saw was their next stop at the Centrum.
Black Pete the first two shows(3 out of 5 if you're counting)
Then after Going Down the Road out of space on the 3rd show, Garcia turns the set over to Bob and Brent. Miracle>Fantasy>Jude>Stones>NFA Encore:Saturday Nite

This show is significant because it was an add on announced just before the tour started and to be at the Omni, where the Dead hadn't played since 74.

2 Don't Ease Me In set-closers in a row?
Jerry's voice was very ragged from a cold.
During Black Peter I think it was, he became so frustrated with his voice
that he pulled his mic from the stand and SLAMMED it down on the stage,
(you can clearly hear this on the tapes), and then rips into an "angry" solo.
Never seen THAT before!
