Thanks, China Rider, that's good to know! I'm asking for an older family member who doesn't want MMJ but is considering CBD and I really don't know a thing about it, other than she can probably buy it now without having to go through a hippie store.
I take CBD every day. I feel like it keeps me chill and helps me sleep. I’m pretty active and have plenty of aches and pains. One day I took enough to relieve pain - 250 mg. It worked, but it was definitely cost prohibitive.
BK Her Dr prescribed Hydrocodone (sp?) for the pain which I can only imagine is pretty expensive, it might be worth it if CBD costs less than her script does although I'm pretty sure she has good insurance. It cracks me up that she's wary of MMJ but is super on-board with a habit-forming (narcotic) pain killer, but I do understand, sometimes back pain is unbearable. Hoping CBD is a worthwhile alternative.
it depends on the severity of the pain - many potheads and cannabis industry folks will talk about cannabis as a panacea of pain management, as if anyone who is on opiates really doesnt need them and can just take care of their back pain with dabs and cbd oil.
cannabis can work for some pain, most of it being mild-moderate. personally cannabis does not work for my back pain. i have a degenerative disc around the c6 or c7 vertebrae. its possible that a few zoners that frequent txr have seen me kneeling on the floor towards the end of the second set struggling to stand up and make it to the end of the show...cbd and cannabis do absolutely nothing for my pain. luckily when im not crammed into a sardine can venue and taking psychedelics, my back is usually not that bad, but even on my best days when its just a bit stiff and sore, i still dont get much relief from cannabis, and the relief i do get seems to be obviously from the relaxing aspects of the high itself, not some kind of anti inflammatory or analgesic effect...just the loosening of muscles that comes with anything deeply relaxing.
as someone who uses cannabis every day, works with it for a living, and has several friends with serious pain issues who are lifetime opiate users, the idea that pain patients with serious chronic pain can just take CBD instead is absolutely absurd.
occasionally i do use CBD during times when my pain levels are high, but not for its own painkilling effects. it is a posititve allosteric modulator at the mu opioid receptor, so when i use CBD before taking something like kratom or an opioid pain medication, it causes my mu opioid receptors to become sensitized and produce an increased response when they are activated by kratom or pain meds.
personally, my favorite thing for back pain is something ive mentioned here before, the green ny-quil gelcaps that contain 325mg acetaminophen, 15mg DXM and 6.25mg doxalymine succinate. doxalymine is a hypnotic antihistamine, and is approved in canada for the treatment of muscle pain, but in the US it is only available as a sleep aid or in these nyquil gelcaps for cold symptoms. the combo on the tylenol and doxalymine make for a potent combo, with strong anti inflammatory effects and muscle relaxation. they work much much better for me than viccodins.
one other thing to add is that IME viccodin is a very weak opiate. you hear alot about people abusing it, and alot of people do abuse it, but any serious opiate addict cant even get a little bit high on viccodin. everyone i know who is or has been on viccodin long term for back pain has pain that is likely mild enough to be helped by lifestyle changes like back strengthening exercises, yoga, massage, a new matteress, an ergonomic chair for the office, and increasing physical activity in general. your first instinct when things are hurting back there is to lay down, but IME one of the best things for my back pain is light physical labor for at least 4 hours.
With that said, I listened to a great episode of the Science Versus podcast where they discuss all things CBD. The majority of samples they tested DID actually contain quantifiable amounts of THC and there was a woman who was devastated to know she was drugging her kid up on the stuff. Check out the podcast.
The episode of Science Versus I referenced is called "CBD: Weed Wonder Drug?" and was released on 11/15/18. Check it out! Very informative and should answer you and your family member's questions. I like the host, Wendy. She has a cute Australian accent and a ton of energy.

About an hour from you in Boonville. Call to make sure they have it in stock.
They also have other homeopathic remedies and therapies.
Thanks, folks, lots of good info to take in. I did some window shopping yesterday online and wow is it confusing! Mylar, I might head up to Boonville to check that out, worth a try if DL's suggestion doesn't get the green light.

That has great potential, DL, convincing her to try CBD hasn't been very productive, and she's having pretty severe spasms that had her laid up for a month. I have a feeling after doing my skimming online research that she's not going to get much relief from CBD for the pain, at least until it's more under control. I still think it would help her rest, but that's not really the top priority, and the Nyquil will certainly knock her out for less money.
Also with the massive CBD goldrush, most of the CBD source is derived from hemp. While it's is there, seems to me that you want it from the other side of the spectrum...not sure the hemp only does much...
You need full extract cannabis oil. CBD by itself will not do much.
I recently broke my leg and never took one ibuprofen or pain med. In fact the break healed in less than half the time as normal without a cast or other help. I get this great salve that is high in both THC and CBD along with other fine ingredients. The CBD is a great anti-inflammatory and THC is a good pain killer(if they are taken together). The naturally occurring terpenes and flavinoids and other natural medicines that are present in the Cannabis plant all are necessary to get the most out of your cannabinoids.
But buying CBD oil only will not help with most things.
