The vulgarities of the "new left" in checkmate, sad...try to have an apolitical moment, I can honestly say I don't believe I've ever posted a word of foul language on this message board. Namaste.
I think what we may be witnessing is the predictable "chipping away" of the cultural norms in the Grateful Dead Scene post-Garcia, I've never had that thought "crystallize" before this very moment, but it's a valid theory. I hate to admit it, because it's not a positive, uplifting topic of discussion, but taking a step back and trying to establish a perspective, it was probably somewhat predictable from August 9th, 1995 on. I'm sure a contributing factor is the general degradation of society, but I don't recall the chronic crassness when Garcia was alive...it's a discouraging trend.
I don't particularly care if you disagree with views or thoughts, but try to have a basic level of civility & class, a respect for a golden bowl of civilization, the finest ever seen.
...interesting side note: the Grateful Dead played the theme to Close Encounters of the Third Kind during Space in the summer of 1989 in East Noblesville. The fields were full of dancin'...the corn was indeed a bumper crop. Namaste beautiful people, I love you very much, stay beautiful! There should be a basic level of decorum on this board, seriously.
Druba, Drubabinsky, Drubapolis, Drubamagnificent, Dr. Drub, I realize they played a Eugene Close Encounters Jam in 1978, this was an East Noblesville Close Encounters Jam in 1989, two different jams 11 years apart, get your act together, some people look at you to set an example...be the change you wish to see in others.
I love Eugene as much as the next guy, I listened to that version last summer, it was right after the movie was released. The nicknames were terms of endearment.
Hey bry, Im sure you know of the close encounter they played the following show 7-17 Alpine...but did you know Jerry played close encounters in Jacksonville too? (4-8-78)
..also Jerry was toying with Phantom of the Opera theme that summer 89 with a pretty thorough version at shoreline HBO show 6-21-89...and cal expo 8-5-89 had like a mesh of the two phantom and close encounters jJerry just going off with the midi
Greg...quite possibly you're correct, maybe I got Deer Creek confused with Alpine, although, possibly not, because I'm often correct on these matters. Funny story about that tour, we had this amazing captain at the wheel, Steve, who had the Terrapin Transportation schoolbus with the "Keep the Scene Clean" bumper stickers, anyways...we did a lot of adventuring between shows, on our way out west, we camped close to where they shot the final scenes of "Close Encounters", anyways, there was the meteor shower of my life that evening...days after hearing Jerry Garcia jam the theme song during space.
I kind of have a funny story about that night, I know it's not super groovy to mention names, but I remember hanging out with Timmy & Roach afterwards and discussing how many people were actually "on tour" we figured about 350...which was in a way beautiful.
I was at this one...end of an era, the last show of the last great tour, the last Greek Theatre Grateful Dead Show, true story, as high as I've ever been in my life, eye to eye contact with Garcia throughout the evening, he surely must have been thinking to himself "Who is this kid as high as I've seen anyone in years?", it was a special moment in time.

The thing about the Eugene version the Close Encounters theme is played emerging from a righteous Garcia solo and he is out there.
