The obvious answers is Yoko but mostly in part to timing. Had the Black Widow successfully engulfed Garcia during an earlier period, say the 1975 hiatus, it would perhaps be a more even discussion.
She had an art exhibit at a museum here about 6 months ago and I must say, I was impressed by how cool it was. I really did not expect anything good since I kind of don't like her but I had to eat crow and recognize that it was cool. One exhibit had like a giant trough full of broken ceramic cups and plates and the audience could then glue pieces together in whatever way they wanted to. She had a big ol' wooden cross and a box of nails and hammers, so you could then nail nails into the cross, lol. Kinda whacked out but it was original and thought-provoking. Plus, my kids loved it.
Her and John's "Double Fantasy" record is an LP I see a lot. It's kind of like the album of JFK speeches that pops up everywhere, in that after Kennedy and Lennon's deaths it seems almost everyone felt compelled to buy a copy. John had all the popular radio songs on Double Fantasy, but Yoko's work pre-saged much of the more experimental avant-garde and electronic music to come in the years that followed.
By being a patient and supporting partner, she helped lead John to the inner peace he had found when his life was so tragically ended.
Uh that would be George. Ono fucked John's mind seven ways to Sunday. Forget for a moment her influence in breaking up the greatest band ever, her last straw for me was finding out George invited John to play the Bangladesh benefit. Lennon wanted to but after Yoko demanded to also perform, it was scrapped. Johns presence would have generated millions for that cause. Even for a monumental benefit like that its all about fucking Yoko. Lennon was a weak insecure little boy to begin with so to control him was not a great feat for the psycho mind control bitch.
It's so easy to pin a person's fault on somebody else. If Yoko contributed to breaking up the band it's because John let her. If it was her fault that he didn't play the Bangladesh concert, it's because he let her. What was he some kind of amoeba with no brain? Give the guy some credit.
Same comment applies for the John Kahn thread. Geez, folks, have we ever heard of taking responsibility for our own actions?
She all but ruined what would have been an incredible set - John's sit in with the Mothers 71 Fillmore East. Screaming chirping bag lady, WTF ?? Frank had some lovely comments about that. She pulled that same shit at the Stones Rock + Roll Circus, nobody could stand it so it was cut from the film. Fuck was John thinking ? Amoeba is pretty damn close.
I had a coffee with Julian Lennon at a Borders bookstore in Santa Monica in the late 90's.
Yoko never came up, oddly - neither did his dad. 15 minutes of polite conversation about nothing of substance. Just chewing the fat with a stranger in the pre-cell phone days.
George invited John to play the Bangladesh benefit. Lennon wanted to but after Yoko demanded to also perform, it was scrapped. Johns presence would have generated millions for that cause. Even for a monumental benefit like that its all about fucking Yoko
I am not a Yoko fan, that being said. The Beatles would have broken up regardless who John was sleeping with and how would John's inclusion at the benefit raised millions? Both shows were sold out so no extra cash there. The 3 record set sold gazillions of copies. no one I ever knew back then didn't have a copy, so John would have induced more to buy it ? Maybe but to generate millions more in sales? I disagree, dislike or even hate her, but I don't agree with your arguement
Yoko was a big part of the fluxus art movement in the '60s. They shared part of a shop on the Sunset Strip (near where I lived at the time) and I went a few times because I strongly enjoy experimental, strange, surreal art. Good fun. Her work was often good.
Right on. Diff strokes. That's why this list rules.
There's no bigger Beatles / Lennon fan than me, cept maybe that crazy Liam bastard from Oasis. They are my bible to this day, but what she did to good music is a travesty. The Music, thats what matters to me, thats how I judge. Almost forgot about her screeching on Live Peace In Toronto. Just fucking horrible. Revolution #9, oh yeah, thats a listenable piece of shit. If course she deserves credit for her avant garde art, opening those kind of doors sure. But what she does to music can be considered a crime, and I've seen her live in the 80's, and Julian on his one big tour. He was wonderful, her not so much.
John wrote some great songs after yoko entered his life, putting em on mediocre albums. Paul wrote great songs all thru the 70's, putting em on great albums. McCartney - Ram - Band On The Run, you know every single song on those albums. There's nobody who knows every single Lennon tune from the same period. A lot of shit.
Oh yoko
My love will turn you on
Really ??? Jesus Christ she twisted that poor boys mind, stunting his growth till the end of his days.
You know the song, right ? In the middle of a shave - , its pretty fucking weak and pathetic, watered down slop compared to when he was in real band and he did a worthy version - I Want You She's So Heavy.
See what im saying ? IMO under her influence the music suffered. For that there is no excuse.
Ras, have you ever seen PBS documentary, "Lennonyc"? It was very apparent from that that John exorcised his demons and was at peace with himself in his final year.
"If she is good enough for John Lennon then she is good enough for me."
I'm going to go with Crabneesh on this one. Overall, I consider that John Lennon's body of work speaks for itself, pre- and post-Yoko. War is Over is a genius and beautiful campaign. The bed-ins for peace, a beautiful concept as well. Fighting for peace, writing songs about the working class, about women's rights being trampled. John was a pretty heavy cat and did so much for humanity. Even if Imagine was the only thing he had ever done he would still have earned a slot in humanity's superheroes. If Yoko brought him happiness and peace as some say here, even if she just tolerated his shit and gave him good sex, whatever it was, give the guy a break: he did enough for us all. What have you/I/we done for humanity recently?

You think I'm rough on her, I have a friend who calls her a scum bag gold digging grave robber after she recently went after writing credits for Imagine. I aint going anywhere's near that one, I wasn't there
