Yo ho ho and a bottle of Rum

Forums:

Don't know exactly why - but I have been on a rum kick lately. And I like rums that you can drink neat - none of that spiced shit.

So far have really liked the 20 year old El Dictador Solera System from Columbia - it tastes like pancakes and Vermont Maple Syrup. No shit.

Also have liked the Ron Zacapa Centenario Sistema Solera 23 year old Rum from Guatemala and the Atlantico Reserva from The Dom. Rep.

Any other rum heads out there?

What do you recommend?

Over the holidays i sipped on some Appleton Estate 12 year aged rum from jaimaca mon.. it made me feel quite irie.

Selvarey white rum from panama is a great choice if you drink mojitos.

Those rums you mentioned sound awesome, and pricey!

one of the first things my wife and I do when we arrive at any given tropical location is to pick some white rum, capt morgan's spiced rum, and juices (usually pineapple, guava and coconut) to make a sort of mai tai... it's the only time I ever drink rum, but it so happens that we're going to HI next week, so I guess it's yo ho ho time again!

i had some rum the other night. I really enjoy a rum and coke now and then, just a tad sweet.

Enjoy yourself, Hall!

We're going to HI for the first time in 16 years (some family members for the first time), this March/April.

Thanks!  I need this...

what lsland(s) are you guys hitting?

I have a bottle of Angostura 1919 that I've been enjoying straight up.

>>>I really enjoy a rum and coke now and then

The best rum and cokes I have had were at the thatched shack next to the runway at the "airport" in Governor's Harbour on Eleuthera in the Bahamas.  Dirt cheap and strong as all fuck - "You want some Coke in your rum mon?"

Rum is super cheap in Central America - as low as four bucks a fifth.   When I was in Belize City last year, I passed through a little outdoor market and there were guys selling rum in coconuts.  For a couple of bucks, they would chop of the top of a frozen coconut, let you fill it with as much rum as you want, and off you went walking down the street drinking straight rum from a coconut.

Six, are you buying those locally?

Also, are any of them over 80 proof? Some of them are too strong for me to drink neat, but I'm a pussy.

Not really a big drinker but for the money/quality Sailor Jerry's is overall very good. Ron Zacapa (Guatemalan) 23 yr old is a nice sipper and another Costa Rican 12 yr old version (do not recall name) is great as well.

Jerry's is go-to for Mojitos even though dark rum is generally not used for those beauties. Cheerz!

This thread inspired me. Just picked up a bottle of this at BevMo. Sippin on some right now.. very smooth, yet the oak is very pronounced

Not really into drinking rum straight, always use it as a mixer.  Not into the spiced or flavors either.  Cruzan or Bacardi is fine for me as a mixer.  I use RC Cola or various gourmet sodas, or sometimes orange and/or mango juice.  Also like the Capt Morgan white & Gosling's dark Bermuda.

I am a former Beer & Wine producer for small Microbreweries and Humongous Wine factories, so I am always interested in how the hooch is produced.

Some tales I've heard about Rum tend to make me cautious about the stuff...  basically you are sipping Eau Du Raton...

The rats love to get into the barrels of fermenting cane-juice, pre distillation. Of course, it's all distilled and filtered later.

Although I've seen a snake or two in truckloads of Grapes for the crusher/destemmer, there has never been a single Rodent in the millions of gallons of Beer & Wine that I've produced.

The process basically excludes any organisms beside Wine or Beer Yeast. OK, there is a very slim chance that a Fruit Fly might sneak in to a bottle. But that's a huge difference compared to multiple Rats drowned in barrels of fermenting Cane.

Père Labbats mmmm

I like a large rum and coke when sitting in the leisure pool after skiing. Pretty much a regular thing for over 12 years.

Six, are you buying those locally?

No. Over in New Hampshire and Massachusetts when on trips. The prodigal son brought me the El Dictador when he returned from a New year's trip to see some friends down there. I had their 12 year old already - but I had him pick me up some 20 year old.

Stu - I am pretty sure that rats are not allowed in the solera system blending tanks.

Flora de Cana is the 12 yr old Costa Rican version I could not previously recall. An old Pirate friend brings it back once in a while.

was into the Bacardi Solera for the last couple summers...but I'm back on the bourbon

Talk like a pirate day only 8 months away. I propose we revisit this conversation then again.

Arggggggggggghhhh, pass the rum.

Gosling's and ginger beer

Best rum I have ever enjoyed was a 1953 Trois Rivieres -- a Rhum Agricole -- from Martinique.  Truth be told, it must be the kind of rum pirates drank either before they raped and pillaged, or danced on tables, or went to GD shows. There are later year productions available on the Internet.  Well worth the price of admission

Here is a taste of the Great Rum Runners...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GswPO2eX_VI

Here is a taste of the great rum runners
Ships that sailed the velvet harbor
Crews that broke the jugs and poured your blood
Like flowing rum upon the sand

Sinking down, down, down
Upon the sand, upon the sea
Upon the hills of liquid green
They rise to fall, they rise again
Their dreams tattered sails in the wind

Here is a wail of a lone flute playing
Those not hanged, by time were slain
Here is a cup of blood and tears
Here is the wail of a hundred years

Going down, down, down
Upon the sand, upon the sea
Upon the hills of liquid green
They rise to fall, they rise again
Their dreams tattered sails in the wind

Overnight they turned to water
No blood rang when they went to slaughter
Tears were few, though sighs were heavy
Bones were stacked in the main library

Turning down, down, down
Till their dreams are touching ground
Rising up like gentle rain
They turn to rise and fall again

Running round and changing faces
Marking time and keeping paces
Ducking down awhile to die
Their faces melt to barren sky

After all the trial and fury
They spared the judge and hanged the jury
No one asked the reason why
Sentence passed they turned to die

Turning down, down, down
Till their dreams are touching ground
Rising up like gentle rain
They turn to rise and fall again
Their dreams tattered sails in the wind

Here is fire and bloody slaughter
Written on the leaves of water
Here is a ship with all hands singing
Here is a dock with dark men swinging

Down, down, down
Upon the sand, upon the sea
Upon the hills of liquid green
They rise to fall, they rise again
Their dreams tattered sails in the wind

I enjoy the El Dorado rums from Guyana.  I've had the 12 and 15 year and sampled the 21 year.  I prefer the 12.  Like scotches, they get smoother with the additional aging but they lose some of the flavor during the process.

tis a rare day indeed, (mostly) swore off the stuff in HS. perhaps moderation taken in moderation is the order of the day.
