Move Over, Pot: Psychedelic Companies Are About to Go Public

(Bloomberg) -- The first companies developing medical treatments from psychedelic drugs like LSD, ketamine and the active ingredient in magic mushrooms are gearing up to list on Canadian stock exchanges.

Mind Medicine Inc., which is undertaking clinical trials of psychedelic-based drugs, intends to list on Toronto’s NEO Exchange by the first week of March, said JR Rahn, the company’s co-founder and director. A NEO spokesman confirmed the listing, which is pending final approvals.

The company plans to list via a reverse takeover under the ticker MMED. It’s not yet generating revenue and is targeting a valuation of approximately $50 million, Rahn said. Mind Medicine counts former Canopy Growth Corp. co-chief executive officer Bruce Linton as a director and Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary as an investor.

“Our ambition is to be one of the first publicly listed neuro-pharmaceutical companies developing psychedelic medicines,” Rahn said in a phone interview.

Be careful. Canadian pot stocks were once the rage also.

MindMed is gearing up for a Phase II clinical trial focused on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) where participants will receive a micro dose of LSD to increase focus and creativity. Taking a page out of the CBD playbook, these dosages would not be high enough to elicit any hallucinogenic effects, making them more palatable for doctors to prescribe.

In addition, the company is working on a non-hallucinogenic synthesized version of Ibogaine, a naturally-ocucring psychoactive substance found in plants. The team recently acquired an anti-addictive molecule that was previously funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and plans to develop a Phase II clinical trial to treat addiction.

things like this are actually a bit concerning. i think alot of pro-psychedelics folks see a path for psychedelics that is similar to cannabis...open up public opinion to full legalization by instituting programs where the substance is available medically.

alot of what im seeing now is the potential for very tightly controlled mdma useage in very specific situations under medical supervision only, and things that attempt to circumvent the psychedelic experience by microdosing or creating non psychedelic analogues.

this is not nessicarily the path forward towards psychedelics being available to all adults for the purpouse of spiritual/mental exploration and personal growth. im exited about it, but without focus on things like personal liberty and cognitive freedom, i think there is a chance the door could be closed to recreational availability of psychedelics by creating a framework of microdosing, non-psychedelic analouges, and tightly controlled "trips" under psychiatric supervision only.

Folks will still be able to get their trip on, as always.
