RIP Wes Unseld

Forums:

Back in the early 70's when imo the nba was worth watching the Unseld Bullets vs the Reed Knicks were great games to watch the teams were mirror images of each other

Too bad nobody filmed them.

Sorry to hear this.  I was a 13 year old kid growing up in the D.C. suburbs when the Bullets won the 1978 title.  Big Wes had damaged knees by that point, but was still a beast.  There was a story that when he played at Louisville, he could jump so high that he could pick quarters placed on top of the backboard.  The Opera Ain't Over 'Til The Fat Lady Sings Bullets were a lot of fun to follow.  Wes, the Big E Elvin Hayes, Phil Chenier, Bob Dandridge, Tom Henderson, Mitch Kupchak, Greg Ballard, Kevin Grevey.  I'd see some great Grateful Dead shows later in the Cap Centre, but watching that team were my first high times in that building.

R.I.P. Wes

Them was some Glory Days for sure. Great tough as nails player during some great team days.  Dave Bing

I thought Unseld was amazing, which is one reason why it was such a thrill as a 15-year-old to watch the Warriors sweep him & the heavily favored Bullets four in a row to win the championship in '75.

That final game was something to remember, where the Bullets desperately sent their goons to smash Rick Barry to the ground, trying to provoke him into fighting and get kicked out of the game. Head coach Al Attles shoved Barry away and fought the goons himself, getting thrown out of the game instead of Barry.

The good ol' days of the NBA... right?

A sad day for Washington fans.

DC is really taking it these days.

Well, they do have the defending MLB and WNBA champs, the Caps won the Stanley Cup 2 years ago, and just down the road in Charlottesville, UVA is still the defending NCAA Men's Hoops champs.  So they've got that.

Yeah, I'm not sure many people are thinking much about sports right now, especially in DC, where Bible Boy is large & in charge.

Hopefully at some point we'll get back to caring about who wins a game.

You know, the important stuff.

One of the things Wes was very good at was rebounding and the long outlet pass up court and sometimes just hanging back to play D again. I don't recall him resting much on the bench.

( Baltimore Bullets )

One thing to ponder is why Bmore never got a replacement NBA franchise. Did they just not care, even now?

Baltimore is too close to. D.C. and Philly.  The NBA doesn't want to oversaturate the market and had/has bigger television markets with no competition available.  Baltimore also does not have the type of arena the NBA requires these days.
