I've driven through Sturgis but never attended Bike Week. Beautiful part of the country, rolling hills and wide open space.
My friend Ray of "Ray's Sharpening" went one year with his Hog and said "Quite a bunch of Crazy Bikers. They got Guns, they got Knives, they got Gunnives."
Never been to Bike Week in Sturgis but I was in Daytona for a few days in 1991. I ride myself, do like motorcycles, and appreciate (certain) Harleys just as much as as anyone but it can get old hat having them race around 24/7 at such events....heads full of steam, firewater, and whatever else feeds that frenzy. There is a more so low-key event (Poker Run out of Miami?) that winds up in Key West in mid-Sept that I have enjoyed quite a bit over several different years.
I was in Sturgis for the first weekend of the 1997 rally, but my being there during the rally was a total coincidence.
That summer, I was working at a program outside of Chicago that housed DCFS kids who because of behavioral issues couldn't stay in foster homes any longer, but weren't quite ready for the juvenile justice system yet. Myself and another staff member took a group of six of the best behaved kids on a cross-country camping trip up to Glacier National Park, and we stopped by the Black Hills for a few days of camping at Custer State Park just outside of Sturgis on our way out west.
We didn't know when we were making our plans that Sturgis would be going on, but as we were driving across Iowa and then South Dakota, it became clear from all the bikes on the road that we had stumbled onto something uniquely American. The kids I was traveling with were quite amused by all the bikes flashing chrome not to mention the raucous counter-culture we found ourselves in the midst of.
The world's largest biker bar, the Full Throttle Saloon, is the epicenter of the infamous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, an annual celebration in South Dakota each August that attracts roughly 700,000 partygoers.
in '88, i worked in Rockford and the best acid source I ever had was a Vietnam vet truck driver/ biker coworker who had been going to Sturgis since '80. If half of what he said actually went on, it's pretty wild, but not mask-wearing wild.
NY just added South Dakota to the naughty list. That must suck for NY bikers who decided to go Sturgis based on no quarantine requirement and are already there.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A data graphics company has created a visualization of the nationwide traffic that filtered into South Dakota for the 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
During the month between August 2nd and September 2nd the US recorded 1.4 million new cases of COVID-19. According to a new study, 19 percent of those cases were caused by the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.
>>>I heard that there were over 17 Gazillion potential cases due to Idiotsticks rioting in the streets

Meanwhile, back here on the East Coast, we are ethnically and racially Diverse, as usual. About half of my Firewood income comes from White Honkies and half from POTW folks. (People other than white) and if their cash doesn't bounce, their Firewood will burn fine.
