I always thought the packs went on your back. See better that way.
That other pic made me wonder how many Native Americans, cowboys (Butch and Sundance?), and explorers, took refuge under that cavern near that water source.
Slick...have you ever been in the cave off Keg Knoll and above Horseshoe Canyon with that was the "home" of cattle bandit Bill Tibbitts? Old cowboy petroglyphs etc.
Great shots, Ned, looks like a very very cool area!
I had to abort my Sierra trip last due to smoke/fire, but I managed a quick 4 day trip to the Grand Canyon in November. It was awesome (hiked rim to river and back in a day) and when I got back home I started looking at maps of the adjacent areas and Lake Powell/Escalante looked very promising (which has now been confirmed). Is the permit process a pain?
I've been eyeing "The Maze" in Canyonlands for some time until I ready I need to carry 3 gallons of water per day. I may have to just car camp and do day trips to make that work.
Zang....The Maze district of Canyonlands is one of the most remote areas to access in the Lower 48. I have a very good friend that was a ranger there for years, and have done a few loops down in the Land of Standing Rocks, Pete's Mesa, Chocolate Drops, Harvest Scene panel, Doll House, etc. You need a very sturdy 4x4 to get down the Flint Trail from the Hans Flat Ranger Station, and its a monster of a road. One good option is to take a round-trip jet boat from Moab and get dropped off at Spanish Bottom (1.5 hours...cool ride), and you can hike up into the Doll House and Maze from there.
Googly...no cap on permits into Coyote Gulch. There's a few ways to get in/out, which will determine how many nights you're down in there. We did an out and back access via Crack in the Wall. You can also do a loop back to 40 Mile Ridge trailhead up a more technical route above Jacob Hamlin Arch, or walk out and up through Hurricane Wash if you have 2 cars or shuttle arranged..
Ned, very much appreciate the offer and insight. The boating option sounds great as long as you could guarantee the springs were flowing. I'd hate to carry that much water up hill.
Unfortunately, I think I'd have to car camp with how my back is treating me these days but then I could spend a week doing different day trips. I'm still trying to get a sense of the scale of the place as there is not much documentation about it. I've spent some time in google maps poking around (and the few online articles that exist) and it looks pretty special. I'd have to rent a 4x4 but I'm sure that's easy enough in Utah. You definitely have my mind flowing a bit more about making this happen. Perhaps Spring 2022.
There's some decent established sites at the Horseshoe Canyon trailhead in Robber Roost/San Rafael desert. You could do some day trips from there (Horseshoe Canyon, Colonnade Arch aka 5 Hole Arch, Bluejohn Canyon (Ralston/127 Hours), etc). There's a coup;e great spots to camp east of Keg Knoll towards the 5 Hole Arch "parking lot" (the one to the right is best).
There's a great spot to camp at Happy Canyon right outside (north) of the Maze District and Hans Flat Ranger Station. You could do day trips from there, as well. Near your entry to that area off Utah 24 is Goblin Valley State Park, and the Swell from there....
