President Donald Trump is reshuffling the US National Security Council (NSC), downgrading the military chiefs of staff and giving a regular seat to his chief strategist Steve Bannon.
Mr Bannon, formerly the head of the populist right-wing, Breitbart News website, will join high-level discussions about national security.
The order was signed on Saturday.
The director of national intelligence and the joint chiefs will attend when discussions pertain to their areas.
Under previous administrations, the director and joint chiefs attended all meetings of the NSC's inner circle, the principals' committee.
The National Security Council (NSC) is the main group advising the president on national security and foreign affairs.
It is led by retired lieutenant-general Mike Flynn, who was one of Mr Trump's closest advisers and most ardent supporters during the campaign.
"The security threats facing the United States in the 21st century transcend international boundaries," Mr Trump's executive order said.
"Accordingly, the United States Government's decision-making structures and processes to address these challenges must remain equally adaptive and transformative."

As horrified as I am about Bannon, I am more mystified that they want to make these decisions without the joint chief and intelligence director. That is a serious move. Someone on the BBC website (sorry no link) suggested to watch out for this kind of stuff exactly. While trump does something stupid, it distracts the news and citizens from his true agenda and activity. or vice versa, Bannon does something outrageous while Trump slips other shit past people. Like slight of hand- hey look over here whilst I pick your pocket. All trump knows is bad business and the art of the con. Don the Con. People are watching though and the same media that gave him the election (imo) may end up riding him out on a rail. Telling the press to keep its mouth shut is a clear representation of what he is all about and probably going to bite him in the ass. Meantime lets keep an open mind and heart fellow citizens! Keep speaking up for what is right! I dont know about you but I am encouraged by the marches and protests at the airports.

I've been convinced all along
I've been convinced all along that Presidential Hissy Fits are there to distract. Not just to allow Bannon and Pence to do creepy shit, but also congress. This morning I was listening to Priebus defend this move with Bannon and talking about how the NSC just gets raw data and that Bannon, as opposed to military or intelligence personnel, has a better handle on the international situation and a better ability to "translate" the data--ie, to massage to data and conveniently mold it into whatever his agenda needs. This shifty white power anti-fact scumbag is far more dangerous than anything else Trump brings to the table.
