Yep! Going to the Saturday show. Gotta see Phil and an electric band.
About twice the price for the same gig in the Grate Room pre-pandemic, which I totally understand. (I spent $0.00 on shows between 03/01/2020 and 04/30/2021)
Looking forward to a real good time.

Well, this afternoon I was
Well, this afternoon I was ambivalent, but tix were still available early this morning and I broke down and bought in for Sunday.
Initially there were a few things that had me holding off - I thought it was bit pricey, in general I much prefer the Grate Room, I'm not a huge Lane fan.
But after thinking on it a bit more, I liked Johnny's justification about the dough, I figure the park will be comfortable with less people than a normal full show there, Lane tends to play a bit harder & busier with Phil, I really like Lebo with Phil, and...
PHIL LESH WILL BE PLAYING!!!
It's been a while, and I'm pretty sure once I'm there I'll be VERY happy I made the effort.
Sorry I won't be seeing you Johnny, next time for sure, when we both will...
GO TO THE SHOW!

Sorry Woz, but the Texas
Sorry Woz, but the Texas Blues guitarist Sam "Lightnin" Hopkins and pianist Wilson Smith were using the Thunder & Lightning moniker a good 20 years before Gravenites and Cippolina.
From Lightnin' Hopkins Wikipedia page:
>>>>>
Hopkins took a second shot at Houston in 1946. While singing on Dowling Street in Houston's Third Ward, which would become his home base, he was discovered by Lola Anne Cullum of Aladdin Records, based in Los Angeles.[5] She convinced Hopkins to travel to Los Angeles, where he accompanied the pianist Wilson Smith. The duo recorded twelve tracks in their first sessions in 1946. An Aladdin executive decided the pair needed more dynamism in their names and dubbed Hopkins "Lightnin'" and Wilson "Thunder".[7]

^What Roarshock said.
^What Roarshock said.
A Grate time in the backyard. Bring a folding chair and/or blanket. Security was lax about bringing in your own water (I had 2 liters with me). No masks! (well you need to wear one when going indoors for the restrooms).
So great to reconnect with some of the kindest Zoners you'd ever want to share a show with (you know who you are!).
I felt that the set lst was full of lesser-used treats, some songs that I haven't heard live in a long time (last live "Louie Louie" was Irvine 1988!). The flow of songs fit the hot weather perfectly, IMHO. Nice jam to end Rag, easy going Dire Wolf, chance to sit down and cool down during Crazy Fingers, up to loosen up with Lucy (for a real good time), cool down for the epic story-telling of Johanna, personally enjoyed some breezy shade near the bar for Cucamonga, getting funky with Stranger, swaying and arm windmills with Wheel, reaching the Zenith of high energy dancing to Sittin' on Top of the World, back to church with the Muddy River, then lightening up with Liberty, ending with a bluesy Louie to bring it to a close. No formal encore, though I felt that we were already treated to 3 encore tunes in a row.
I was in a great spot to hear (and feel!) Phil's base through my sternum. And nothing is better than that!
We're back!
I hope that those of you who GTTS have a wonderful time. (I think that you will!).
PS: After the show, I made a spontaneous decision to stop by Mare Island (Vallejo) on my way home (Berkeley) to check out Jerry's Middle Finger. Two full sets with a fantastic light show against the old brick warehouse behind the stage. Good fun and highly recommended next time Mr. Hat hosts a show there.
Happy Sunday!

Write on Dave!
I thought the show yesterday was great. Eclectic set list which included a lot of songs that the GD played infrequently if at all. Outstanding playing by all and Grahame really ripped a great solo on SOTOTW which was a show highlight. Stu's reading of Visions of Johanna was sublime. I can live without ever hearing Loose Lucy again, but the rest of the set choices were great. The slow, slinky Louie Louie was really cool too.

There were lots of jams in & out of songs, so just from my memory, here is a very not-complete setlist...
Dark Star
Jack Straw
Jack-a-Roe
Till The Morning Comes
When Push Comes To Shove
Cassidy
It gets foggy at this point, there was a Ship of Fools in there I think, and a So Many Roads?
There was a rip-roaring Cumberland toward the end
Women Are Smarter
It's All Over Now Baby Blue
Probably some thing/s I'm not recalling.
The show went over two hours, lots of jamming, soft, searching and spacey.
Good stuff.
And I could hear Phil PERFECTLY!!!
Really just how you want to hear him - loud, sharp, clean, dynamic, BIG.
The best stuff.
He was brilliant.

Fantastic show Sunday. Good
Fantastic show Sunday. Good to see old friends maskless with hats down low. I've got to know and like Jay Lane in the mix. He's solid workhorse and love that he floats between and links Phil and Bobby shows these days.
the baby blue, woman smarter Cumberland finish ( not necessarily that order) blasted the show into outer space creating an Unidentified aerial phenomena over the SR canal.
Phil fist pumping the crowd across the way in the cheap seats was classic rebel yell from the man. stubo show night before kept those two locked in from the first note.

>>>So was it a DS or a
>>>So was it a DS or a Cryptical<<<
I'll take Roarshock's word on that. I got there just after they started and it was just free-flowing jamming. It sounded like a Dark Star jam echoing through the neighborhood as I walked to and then into the venue, but it could have easily been a Cryptical jam.
I would have thought they'd play an Other One if they started with Cryptical, but they took some really cool, stretched out jams in both Jack-a-Roe & Till The Morning Comes and those first four songs took up almost an hour. At that point I figured there would either be less songs than the day before or they'd be cutting some things off the set list. Could be that The Other One got the cut. Too bad if so.
Either way, it was a real good floating jam and a great way to walk into the park on such a beautiful afternoon.
It wasn't the world's greatest show, but it was really good, and Lebo on steel much of the time and no keyboard made for a different, interesting sound. Mostly, it was just really good to be listening to live music again. Having not really missed live shows as much as I would have thought, I've been a bit worried that I may be losing my desire for that, but after Phil pulled off a few of his amazing, complex but just exactly perfect sequences, my hat came down and I knew I was back.
Far out.
It was good to see you Bret. A wave across the crowd is almost as good as a handshake these days.
BTW, IMO the number of people in the park yesterday was just about perfect. It felt full but was comfortable and open enough to roam around and find a spot just about anywhere in the place.
I don't know if I'll be making any of the Family Band shows next week, but I'm looking forward to the Melvin show & then the Infamous Stringdusters later in July.
On it goes.
