US attack on Al Queda in Yemen did not go well

In what an official said was the first military raid carried out under President Donald Trump, two Americans were killed in Yemen on Sunday — one a member of SEAL Team 6 and the other the 8-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, the New Mexico-born al Qaeda leader who himself was killed in a U.S. strike five years ago.

The raid in southern Yemen, conducted by the supersecret Joint Special Operations Command, was intended to capture valuable intelligence, specifically computer equipment, according to a senior U.S. military official. Three al Qaeda leaders were killed, according to U.S. officials.

Contrary to earlier reporting, the senior military official said, the raid was Trump's first clandestine strike — not a holdover mission approved by President Barack Obama. The mission involved "boots on the ground" at an al Qaeda camp near al Bayda in south central Yemen, the official said.

"Almost everything went wrong," the official said.

An MV-22 Osprey experienced a hard landing near the site, injuring several SEALs, one severely. The tilt-rotor aircraft had to be destroyed. A SEAL was killed during the firefight on the ground, as were some noncombatants, including females.

Defense Secretary James Mattis had to leave one of Washington's biggest annual social events, the Alfalfa Club Dinner, to deal with the repercussions, according to the official. He did not return.

...

The death toll varies according to the sourcing, with the Pentagon saying 14 militants died, along with "numerous" civilians. Nasser al-Awlaki said Yemenis were circulating a body count of combatants and civilians as high as 59.

...

From a military perspective, losing a Navy SEAL is a huge loss.

People on different sides of the aisle may debate on the importance of the other lives lost.

First Covert Military Mission ordered by Trumpfuck = FAIL.

It was actually planned in the final days of the Obama administration, but this is the reason god invented drones.

A Saudi frigate got hit by a suicide boat off of Yemen yesterday and there is speculation that the attackers thought they were hitting an American ship.

^Well, it will very easy to be confused about their military.  The USA have armed Saudi Arabia... Big League.

this one has shit all over it.

Ouch

>>>>It was actually planned in the final days of the Obama administration, but this is the reason god invented drones.

That's the opposite of what I read.

maybe we should put an end to incessant meddling in other nation's affairs...?

If the news favors trump you can expect a false news story plant, get use to it.

not likely, not Bamm Bamms style, or he never signed off on it because it was too risky.

Here is an ABC news story discussing how the raid had been in the planning stage for sometime and that it was originally going to happen two weeks ago, but it was delayed for operational reasons:

Obama was quite aggressive in the use of special forces operations and commando raids occurred in various countries under his watch, including Yemen, Libya, Syria, Pakistan, and Somalia.

^i heard a similar story on NPR

NBC says different

"Contrary to earlier reporting, the senior military official said, the raid was Trump's first clandestine strike — not a holdover mission approved by President Barack Obama."

Reading the two reports, sounds like it (and presumably many other ops) were planned during the Obama admin.

But Obama had not approved it, Trump did?

Trump campaigned on Obama being soft on terror he can't keep claiming he's just doing what Obama did and have it both ways.

Let the fake news continue, if it was 100% successful, no civilians deaths, no lost chopper, no lost navy seal, you can bet Trump would be taking 100% credit, instead we get the spin report.

I would imagine that any raid like this had probably been at least partially planned for more than 10 days.  And yes, Obama did all kind of special strikes in Yemen.  Had it gone fabulously Herr Cheesy Poof would be claiming all kind of credit, but I bet something like this could have gone well or badly no matter who the POTUS was.

Those Ospreys are pieces of shit. Problematic for years, always crashing at Quantico nearby us.

Alias probably nailed this one

 >>>bet something like this could have gone well or badly no matter who the POTUS was.

That's the way it works and the president will get the blame or the glory depending on how things go down on the ground.  Just think, if there hadn't been a sandstorm in the desert outside of Tehran back in 1980, we may have never had the Reagan years.

( Herr Cheesy Poof )

Planned for weeks or not the timing seems intended to make a splash and i'd wager a guess rushed by this administrations brain trust.

send seal team 6 into the white house...

...

U.S. military officials told Reuters that Trump approved his first covert counterterrorism operation without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup preparations.

As a result, three officials said, the attacking SEAL team found itself dropping onto a reinforced al Qaeda base defended by landmines, snipers, and a larger than expected contingent of heavily armed Islamist extremists.

The Pentagon directed queries about the officials' characterization of the raid to U.S. Central Command, which pointed only to its statement on Wednesday.

...

One of the three U.S. officials said on-the-ground surveillance of the compound was “minimal, at best.”

“The decision was made ... to leave it to the incoming administration, partly in the hope that more and better intelligence could be collected,” that official said.

How many soldiers will pull a Bergdahl and split before this administration

gets them killed?

Where's all the outrage from the right?  SeaDouche?  I know your lurking..

The numbnuts would already be creating the narrative that Obama knew that they were walking into a fire fight but since he is so anti American he was happy that a service man died.

YEMGHAZI !!

Exactly Ned

From Kevin Drum:

Is that really what happened? Or is the Pentagon throwing Trump under the bus for a failure that's their fault? I suppose we might find out if Congress decided to investigate, but that would be out of character for them. After all, Congress rarely spends its time holding contentious hearings about missions in dangerous parts of the world that go south and get people killed. I can't think of one recently, anyway.

This is also strange:

Yemeni officials reported that US warships have been bombarding rebel positions.   An anonymous US official denied the involvement (could be Saudi ships), but the Navy announced today the USS Cole will join other ships already in the region and there is some irony there.

The coverup is not going well either.

The video released by the government this mornig is ten years old.

lol

The military, however, still said the footage was of value.

"It does not matter when the video was made. It is still illustrative of who they are and what their intentions are," said Capt. Jeff Davis, Pentagon spokesman.

Ahead of the botched video release, Thomas had said that "the videos are one example of the volumes of sensitive al Qaeda terror-planning information recovered during the operation."
