Good conversation, though it rambles and repeats a bit. I like their emphasis on the spiritual, on the sophistication of ancient man, and, particularly, on their assertion that history is far longer than science generally allows. Anyone who reads intellectual history and evolutionary biology knows that there must have been grand civilizations of all sorts throughout the last 20,000 years, at least. I also thought that it's funny that these two see Dennett and Dawkins as asshats, and Rupert Sheldrake as a colleague.

Yes, the Cult of Progress. Or, as I call it, the illusion of progress.

First of all, of course, is the problem that progress assumes a direction and a goal. If culture can be analogized to evolutionary biology we see that both are responses to current conditions and have no intrinsic "knowledge" of any future state of existence.

Even if "progress" could be attained through random mutations of culture and technology, is there really such a thing at all? If progress were defined as the greatest happiness for the greatest percentage of humans, it appears obvious to me that human happiness is probably more or less constant over the eons, even though we have increased our numbers and "standard of living".

Abso fucking lutely! I believe that's the cause of the shit show we are experiencing globally...spirit and unconditional love is rising to a level that is breaking up the old fear based paradigms.

Every time any conversation starts dealing with the spirit, or spirituality, my thoughts go out to language, which has yet to point out any comprehensible association between the word and its reference.
Eyes wide open on acid one easily gets the feeling of some extraordinary process in which mysteries are revealed, but that's not spirit or its adjectives. It's just the walls of physical rationalism cracking.

Spirituality is concerned with connections. 

Shall we start there. 

Spiritual thinking can be trancendent, drug induced or not, as a feeling of connectedness or moving from a lower to higher reality AKA alchemy.  From lower to higher, as above so below as a path to follow. Music offers this path to the disciple. 

The problem is when it morphs to religion and the inevitable rule book.
