NEW HARTFORD — A statue of a “homeless Jesus,” currently sitting near the doorway of St. John’s Episcopal Church, is eliciting compassion from passers-by and a headache for local first responders.
The despondent figure, hunched over under a blanket with outstretched, beseeching hand, has evoked concern in those seeing it from afar. There have been three 911 calls to emergency services and the police, the most recent to the ambulance service at midnight Tuesday.
Town Administrative Assistant Christine Hayward wrote the Rev. Sandra Cosman suggesting a less visible location for the figure, created by sculptor Timothy Schmalz and titled “Whatsoever you do.”
Someone draped the figure with a scarf that “looked strikingly like a Hebrew prayer shawl” and that it remained covered “for some time,” she said. More recently, a pink glove was put on Jesus’ outstretched hand.
“Earlier this week, the shawl and glove were removed and brought to the church office,” Cosman wrote. “Yesterday, the person who removed [them] came to the church to explain that they removed the items because it is an art installation and the artist’s work should not be tampered with or changed. Clearly people are thinking.”
It’s not the first time a version of “Homeless Jesus” has prompted calls to the police and emergency services. In 2020, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Bay Village, Ohio, hosted a Homeless Jesus art installation featuring Jesus lying on a bench and minutes after it was placed there someone reported it to police, thinking it was a real person.
In 2014, police in Davidson, N.C., received calls after the statue was placed at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church there. Church officials also received calls from neighbors and passers-by complaining about the statue.
There is a replica of the statue in Rome at the Via della Conziliazione, the street leading to St. Peter’s Basilica outside of the Papal Office of Charities.
The original sculpture was installed at Regis College at the University of Toronto in early 2013, and other versions have since been installed across the world. The statue is based on the Gospel of Matthew passage in which Jesus tells his disciples, “as you did it to one of the least of my brothers, you did it to me"

They say they're moving to Austin because of the cost of living in the Bay Area.
In a big way the cost of living in the Bay Area is BECAUSE of all the big-time tech companies.
If the exodus to Austin continues, it will be interesting to see what the housing market will look like there in the next few years.
And it will still be Texas.
