Keep in mind that parking in Asbury Park on July 4th is a total clusterfuck. It is fairly normal on a summer holiday that all parking anywhere near the beach is gone by 9 am.
Not a short walk but doable. The walk back to the train station, after standing on the paved surface that the audience is located might be a bit tougher.
I'm not trying to avoid driving. I'd just rather walk 30 minutes if need be than add the hours public transit would involve. On a holiday schedule, yet.
Was hoping for a Portchester-type situation, where one can park at the train station or the mall after rush hour.
I am going to be in Asbury Park later today and will do a little parking scouting for everyone. One possibility is to get to AP early enough to park in the Cookman Ave area before the dinner rush. For much of Asbury now, you will have to pay via smart phone app. The town is phasing out parking kiosks. After you park, go have a bite to eat near where you parked and then walk to The Stone Pony. You could also park there and head to the beach area around The Pony and eat there. Lots of great eating options all over Asbury these days. Another option is to hit the northwest section of the city and park there for free. It's a longer walk but free is free and it's a safe area to park.
Did a little bit of scouting the other day and the suggestions I made above are valid. I forgot to add there is some free parking along both side of Sunset Lake as you go further. 5th Ave has more, Sunset Ave a little bit less. For all the other parking app spots, I suggest getting into Asbury around 4pm and cruise around looking for people who are leaving the beach and follow them to their parked cars. Think finding a parking spot during Christmas at the mall and have a little patience.

Is there parking at the train station? The walk back would be just what I need after four hours on the blacktop.
