Thanks Zooey, something to look forward to!
On my short list.
Funny that DNB description does not list artist names but Wally is in the image.... then, just below, there's Molo w/ MoonAlice.
Would love to know the schedule since they are selling single-day tickets in addition to 3-day passes.
Eventbrite SUCKS! I've searched for this event 3 different ways in the app and nothing comes up... but the search on their website, for some reason, worked.
i have to imagine anybody from ohio screaming for a dnb show would be bob page. he is as big a nelson band freak as they come. met him at my first dnb show on 12/5/2001 (on the archive, billy laymon!!) and he provided me with a copy of his recording of the show. changed my life for the better meeting that guy and i mark that anniversary every year. just saw him back in october after too long not seeing him. not one to travel, he hasn't seen them since that last show in '05. his passion for the band is no less diminished by the passage of time. i would stand his passion up against any of the past or present west coast family, many of whom this ohio lurker has met:) play fuckin' ohio boys!!!
^^^ Hey Now Ray, it's good to see you checking in here and representing the Ohio DNB contingent !!
Zooey, thanks for posting that last link. In the FAQs for the venue, it says that there is NO CURFEW... so I would certainly hope that we'd get a full 2 sets (or 3, or...) at both of DNB's headlining slots on Saturday and Sunday. https://www.yokayoranch.com/faqs
Thanks Mark, I'm still planning on your place for the 18th for 1 night.... already found a spot on a camp pass as I'm eager for a 3-day tent camping weekend!
I'm still undecided about my plans for the Ukiah DNB shows in April. The idealistic part of me longs to see DNB every chance I get, because there is always potential for X-factor magic with that great band.
But my realistic, practical side knows from experience that this band has not been at the top of its game since 2015, mostly because of David Nelson himself. The last 7-10 times I have seen Nelson perform, he has been either underwhelming, or simply awful. His band mates often have to help him stay focused, fill in parts for him, and prod him about stuff that should be second nature to a musician of his experience. Those shows have all had great jams, and inspiring moments, but overall, meh. Not what I had been used to from The Best In The Land circa 2007-2015.
I understand that David is old, has health issues, recently lost his wife, and is one of the coolest people around, a living treasure with great vibe and interesting stories from the old days etc, etc. I'm not insensitive to all that, but it also appears, that David isn't proactively doing anything to help himself stay sharp and competent as a professional musician, and as an aging human being. His deteriorating state has been painfully evident when he is on stage, both with DNB and other shows.
I was at Mark's party at Hopmonk recently, which was a good time amongst a wonderful group. The music wasn't so great though, and aside from the challenge of playing without mics or amps, it was mostly because Nelson was terrible. Eric Thompson and Banana seemed to play well, and be physically and mentally sharp, but Nelson was a mess. He was drinking wine the entire evening, stumbling around both literally and within the music. He blew countless lyrics, missed his cues when to start verses, and needed his band mates help constantly to try to keep focused. I honestly thought that I could have led the trio through Henry better than David did. Train wreck. He started playing Last Lonely Eagle about 15 minutes after they had already done the song, and then was surprised when Banana whispered to him that they did that one already. I realize that this was a casual, private gig, but even so, it saddened me to see Nelson play so poorly.
Hopefully, Nelson rehearses a bit for his upcoming duo shows with Banana, takes it seriously as a pro musician, and stays relatively sober on stage. I'm not going to those shows unless I have reason to believe that David is going to play well and stay focused. On the fence about DNB. If I spend the money and make the effort to go to the show, I want it to be great, with face-melting inspiration. The last few times I saw DNB, it felt a bit for me like going through the motions, doing the same thing again out of habit, even though it isn't that great anymore.
No way, Lance. Most Facebook groups can't handle a frank discussion. I've learned by trying to have frank discussions on Facebook. It rarely happens. People are crazy and short-sighted, and cling to their comfort zones. Bring up a reality they don't like, or one they can't perceive, and they can't handle it. It doesn't matter what the group's central focus may be. I've had similar "colorful" responses from people in Giants groups, poker groups, and other music related groups. It's the land of short attention spans and confirmation bias.
If any DNB Hawaii 2020 crew remember meeting Mark and Carol Ann from Alaska, I just learned they will be in Ukiah!
They are still waiting to hear about an RV pass for their camper... they have been hanging in the SW for the winter and Ukiah will be a stop for their slow trip north for the summer.
I agree with Mr Tofuhead on DNB. I also enjoyed his Facebook post about the Molo drama. The last few shows I have been too have been underwhelming and just doesn't excite me anymore. The ranch in Ukiah looks nice but there is no way I would fork out a couple hundred to see this lineup of bands especially for couple days. I'm going to Phil & Friends in April mainly for the friends showing up for it and the venue. The music will take 3rd. The money it cost to go to this would be much better spent for seeing Paul McCartney for the 3rd time.
Yea, in addition to gas and motel or camping expenses, the $100 + fees ticket price makes me definitely pass on the Ukiah shows. Why so much? Can't Roger MacNamee subsidize the event?
Zero/DNB in Berkeley May 15th is $47.50 + fees, benefits Seva, and I can drive home after the show. Looking forward to that one.
"Let me be clear, you will be able to bring multiple cars to load and unload at the campsite, but it may not be possible to leave the cars at the campsite. The parking lot for campers will be close so you can access your car."
"Yes campers are allowed to access the pool!"
"Yes you can line up before noon on Friday."
"No we are not planning on selling ice for coolers."
Can you camp on-site Sunday nite? I saw a stage schedule and DNB is on at 6:30pm (2 sets). Also would sux to break down camp b4 the show (or after, haha)
Yes camping is for all 3 nights. We leave the property Monday morning. I’m hoping to have everyone out by 10am. We will not be extremely strict about this. I’m just trying to be considerate of the property owners. The event rental company will be taking down the stage, etc, so Monday will be busy. We will all be exiting the good times together. Hopefully not full of shame and regrets.
I miss 5 piece jammy Moonalice. Yes they still jam, but it's a shadow of what it was. I guess Mcnamee got tired of strumming first position chords while the others went off for 15 min at a time.
It's nice he's got Lester, son, and the T-birds, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see them now.
Saw them since they debuted and over the years. Some years back Moonalice (original 5 dudes) opend for DSO in my college town on my birthday. Best part was at one point with Molo, Sless, Sears, & Mookie in total psychedelic whirling chaos of patterns and tangents, I look over at Roger. He had stopped playing, mouth open, and was just in total amazement like the rest of us in the audience. It was easy to overlook the rich-founder vocals when everything else was so jammy.

My subjective reflections on the DNB Easter shows in Ukiah, April 2022.
Weather was daunting but had a great time anyway. Llollo's zoner friends were lovely people -- cool and fun (don't know their zoner names, ha).
The woodsy event was sparsely attended. Very casual, at most points of the weekend there was nobody at the front entrance, you could walk in un-ticketed. Many families with kids. Yokayo Ranch is a cute little resort/wedding destination.
Betsy Franck, and the band Bloodkin are bluesy rockers, Betsy also played solo-ish sets. The solo sets were dreamy, the Bloodkin sets loud and raucous. Set banter from the Bloodkin acoustic guitar player: "My friend texted me, asked if I had met David Nelson yet. I said I wasn't sure, because every guy here looks like him!"
Bloodkin band members hung out in the audience a bit. Their pedal steel player, from the side of the stage, paid special attention to Sless as he played.
Moonalice was good! Close to the stage, the t-sisters and Dylan Chambers' vocals seemed kinda hot in the mix. But moving back a bit (like, just ten more feet) and it was all good. Lester Chambers was in especially high spirits and voice on day two.
First day Moonalice had Jason Crosby at keys, he and Barry traded some tasty back-and-forth sections. Jason's playing is more outish than Mookie (day two); Mookie also had creative harmonies, with a more accessible melody. Both players super fine.
Moonalice made it again clear: the Molo-Sears-Sless section is a fuckin monster. During a driving jam, it seemed like Molo incessantly beat the shit out of all of his cymbals. Intense, great stuff.
We leaned into Roger's streaming setup van/tent/uplink, chatted with the friendly videographers. Six camera setup, with zoom and panning digitally controlled by the guys offstage. Impressive.
Two performances by DNB. First night temperature was very cold for Ukiah at this time of year, the band and crowd were fighting it off. In set one, David was reading each lyric, but by set two he was smoother with song.
First night DNB: highlights for me -- Different World > Just A Season > Down The Middle, and Edge of the Wire.
Second night DNB: Started earlier in the day, warmer weather helped. David played some good guitar parts (sometimes in these later years those are more rare), and sang well. Overall band interaction was excellent, with a lot of fine jamming.
Not crowded in front of the band and in the tent, a mellow group of friendly folk!
Highlights - Rainmaker, Fable Of A Chosen One > Into The Mystic > Fable Reprise.
Most valuable player all weekend: Wally Ingram. Not totally sure but I think he played with every band for every performance. His night two DNB work was outstanding.
Again, the weather made it a little tough (cold and rainy, then just cold). But I'm glad I went. Thanks Llollo and JohnnyD! See you all in Berkeley.
Also want to call out Zoners who arrived on Saturday, so fun to reconnect with Chris and Teal and Turtle.
MarkD and Angelo stopped by and I missed out on meeting Angelo.
I'm pretty sure I was the only Zoner to dare to use the hot tub early Saturday morn but I paid for it by slipping on the steps and injuring my foot on the way out.
Really was a fine weekend. They did a great job. Music was very good.
But I am glad I slept in my own warm bed each night.
Pretty sure best Moonalice show I have seen.
And I agree on the Rainmaker, Fable Of A Chosen One > Into The Mystic > Fable Reprise. I prefer my Kick in the Head at the end of the show. Not as the warmup song. But they still finished it strong from Mookies piano solo on.
Bloodkin was very good finishing out the weekend. I think I liked her better with Bloodkin than the "solo" set.
I took this from a weird angle and the quality ain't great but here is "Garden Of Eden".

I learned the following by sending the event organizers some questions:
1) There is a nice outdoor shower hut, looks like 2 showers exist at a minimum -- see images here: https://www.yokayoranch.com/lodging
2) They are opening the gates at noon on Friday 15 April for the race to select a tent or RV spot.
3) If I understood her correctly, more than 1 car can go to a campsite. (Eventbrite info says 4 people, 1 car per tent site)
4) They will also have some sort of shuttle vehicle for those who need shuttling.
5) Still pending: Can all the hippies use the nice pool they have onsite near the tent camping area?

Update from the Event
^^^^ Thanks Zooey!
Update from the Event Organizer:
Yes camping is for all 3 nights. We leave the property Monday morning. I’m hoping to have everyone out by 10am. We will not be extremely strict about this. I’m just trying to be considerate of the property owners. The event rental company will be taking down the stage, etc, so Monday will be busy. We will all be exiting the good times together. Hopefully not full of shame and regrets.

^^^THIS! Yes!

My subjective reflections on
My subjective reflections on the DNB Easter shows in Ukiah, April 2022.

Bloodkin was very good
Really was a fine weekend.
