Best Didn't Go To The Show

Forums:

I saw the "Worst Didn't Go To The Show" thread, and I plan to answer it soon. But meanwhile it made me think of a story I often like to tell, which is my "Best Didn't Go To The Show" story.

Approx 1978, my friend & I went to MSG to try to scare up a Dead Ticket on the street. Scalpers were asking $25 . At $8.50 Face value, that offended my friend's frugal sensibilities. So he says "Let's look in The Village Voice for what else is going on tonight" I was 18 and pretty green, so I said "What's The Village Voice?" He found an ad for Dizzy Gillespie with Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers backing him at The Village Vanguard. That all went completely over my head. I'm like "Dizzy (Dean) the baseball player?"  wink So we ended up having one of the absolutely greatest musical experiences of our lives. It was like studying for a PhD in music! At one point, Bill Cosby (who was still just a funny guy to us back then) came out and played cowbell with the band...

Epic night!

^^^ love this story!

I discovered Art Blakey and Jazz Messengers long ago in a similar fashion, but while living / "studying" in France.

Here's to live music experiences!

Phil Lesh & Ryan Adams at the 12 Galaxies in SF in 2006.

After Phil sat in with Ryan at his two solo shows at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, it was a BIG DEAL when they announced that they were doing a stealth show at the cool little club in the Mission District after Adams 2nd night at the POFA, starting very late.

I had the opportunity to go, but I had seen Phil's sit-in with Ryan during his encore the night before and it was.............. not so good (the Ryan solo show was BRILLIANT) so I thought about it for a few seconds and even though I think it was only something like $5.00, I knew what it would be like and passed.

That turned out to be a wise decision.
