After the actor concluded his remarks, he left the White House briefing room without answering any questions. As he left the room, a reporter shouted: “Are you grandstanding?”
Three sources inside the room identified the reporter as James Rosen of Newsmax. McConaughey left the room without answering the shouted question.
To be fair, he is the most famous person from Uvalde - and he had recently floated the idea of running for Governor. So representing his hometown in D.C. doesn't seem so improbable. Especially since he never declared whether he might be running for elected office as a Republican or Democrat. Of course, any support he had from Republicans was just lost.
Anyway, I think that's why the White House invited him - he did have bipartisan support and they were hoping that he might push the GOP to get on board with gun reform legislation. He also is a gun owner and was embraced by many in the GOP, until this moment.
