He is the reason I grew up a Yankee fan as a kid living in the south. My first trip to The Stadium at age 14, double header with KC Athletics, I saw him bounce one off the scoreboard. He was already declining but seemed like a superhero.
Heartbreaking two part interview on Costas's old late night show, The Mick said he was a poor father and husband, used women, and abused himself. He died of pancreatic cancer not long after.
Both his dad and uncle died young and he thought he would too.

I've seen that interview and it's rough. This is a example of what alcoholism can do to a person.
I'm guessing he wishes he would have stopped the drinking a lot earlier than he did.
That Chronicle shot sure reminds me of a bad weekend.
"Bad Vibes At KMEL Jam"
That was an understatement. I couldn't go to the Jerry tribute in GGP because I had to be at that shitshow that weekend.
As for Mantle, I wish I could have seen him play. It always sounded to me that he was a magical player.
Didn't he start right when the great (greatest?) Joe DiMaggio ended his career? THAT must have been a tough act to follow, something that more often that not can destroy a young player, but he pulled it off.
Those must have been some days to have been a Yankees fan, or just a baseball fan.

The photo of Mantle tossing
The photo of Mantle tossing his helmet is from the July 30th 1965 edition of Life magazine.
Mick was on the cover - titled Mantle's Misery. It was his second Life cover.
The 1st was in 1956 . He also had a 1953 Time cover.
