Yeah.  Me too.  I used see them religiously from 1999 until JK left to play with Phil and Bob.  Seen them off and on since then and they are still a great band, but won't be hitting the Roseland shows tonight or tomorrow.  Roseland sucks and I have tix for Galactic tomorrow night.

They have become almost irrelevant to the diehards since JRAD took shape. DSO had a good run but its time for them to hang it up.

I'n going this Monday.

that said, saw them for the first time in like 7 years on 12/30. 

left at setbreak-i'd say that band lost whatever it was it used to have, laughable how bad it was. worth maybe an $8 bar gig ($50 w/ fees to get in, crazy i know). it was really bad. 

I've heard JM play pretty amazingly most of the times I've seen him - hope this is one of those.

Any chance they'll play 2/13 on 2/13? That'd be cool.

I wouldn't pay to see DSO by themselves.  For whatever reason I just can't get into it.  For me if they were at a festy and I could turn my back and just listen and not watch them.  More like background music while having a good time with friends I can dig on that.  Nothing against Mattson.  I saw him plenty with the tricksters.   I would prefer JK though.   And choosing to see see DSO with Mattson over Phil with JK?  Have fun with that!  I'll take seeing Phil any day of the week and twice in Sunday than do DSO.  Not shitting on DSO or anyone who sees them as I have many times as well.  I would just prefer to see JRAD.  

I don't think JRAD figures into this conversation. I think they are awesome and bring fresh energy to GD music, but this thread is about DSO and I think both bands are on a significantly different trip.

I've always felt JK does a great Garcia, but JM does a great Mattson. That's why I prefer JM in DSO.

That said, I really want to check out JK in his newer projects. I liked his wok with Melvin Seal's' Melting Pot years ago.

Cause if you had ever experienced that, you would have stayed for the second set I'm guessing. Then you would have had an opinion on the show you saw.

I don't know how but I have only seen them one time. I always seen to miss them. I have nothing against them...I just never seem to make it

Granted it's a guess but one based on the fact you left a show at halftime that could have very well smoked.  You'd never know.

Brian...you have a problem with me guessing Pyramid has never seen a show with a scorching set with no action in the first?

I know Pyramid has a problem with it cause he's perma-rag in this place.

I thought they were done for after JK, was skeptical even after the first show I saw with him Mattson 2010 but I think they've only gotten stronger & more dynamic with Mattson, he has a certain edge to his playing that works great for the earlier stuff. The 2 Hampton Beach shows I saw last summer contained some of the best playing I've seen by them, those Hampton Beach shows seem to have gotten better every year from the first one I saw in 06'. Great way to kick of first weekend of June. The show I saw in Dec in Concord, NH was mediocre IMO..even for a Tue night, the Portland,ME pier show I saw in Aug was solid, they can be hit or miss but mostly hit.

i know you like fare thee well, so your taste is music is already questionable at best; sorry dso mailing it in and playing an awful set irks you-it was just unbearable, unlistenable. i got the feeling it was who they were, they had obviously rehearsed it in that manner, and i thought it was incredibly lame and terrible sounding. it's not like a talented phil band played a rough set and i left, totally different, as i've experienced that as well. 

keep being your shitty self, though, you're really good at it. 

I have seen DSO many times and have always been brought to that place by their playing.

I can't say I was a fan of FTW cause I can't say I'm a fan of the modern day Bob Weir.  There's a decent chance that anything he's in is probably going to rub me the wrong way, unfortunately.  We don't choose these things.

But nonetheless, good luck with your menstrual cycle.

The DSO Harrahs  show 2/19 in Tahoe has potential.

I have enjoyed the shows I have seen, sometimes just for the friends and dancing opportunity.

They did play "Walk In The Sunshine" acoustic at Hookahville once.

It was the only time I've ever heard it live.

Good Richie...just took a bike ride with our daughter on a truly beautiful day.  I think the rains did some of their magic because the last few nights and days have been pretty special.

I couldn't disagree with that opinion more.

Mattson with these guys on a special night is something pretty damn cool.

I was bored out of my mind with him the few times I checked him out with Donna and company but he's a monster again with this group of folks.

I haven't seen these guys in a few years, didn't know they were in town this time around but I'm gonna have to check out a show in the not too distant future. 

They play dam well; but try to hard to act like the band; can't take the weird mannerisms.

Isn't Eaton the only one who does that?

My guess is he does that for himself more than anyone else, but I get people being turned off by it. 

For me, I always thought it was kind of fun. 

I personally love that they aren't more popular...Some of the best post Garcia music I've ever seen has been performed by this band. To each his own...I mean some people love Phil's singing....

They are what they are - and what they are is a fabulous and exciting GD tribute that can raise the roof on any given night and get very close to the real deal (- though no one ever can...)

But for sure GD had many a crappy night and DSO when they are ON are in my opinion explosive and full of dynamic energy, great sonic explorations and spacey jams.

The one thing they got that sets them apart from Stu and MH, Phil n Friends, and other cover acts is that they TAKE THEIR TIME.  
They are unhurried and stretch every tune to the full limit.

if i could pay $5 for a twenty minute playin' jam with no lyrics i would go but that's it.  like 99% of all post garcia bands, the singing makes me cringe and than turned off.

South Lake Tahoe is expecting the busy weekend of the year.

That was fun. Started the evening with dinner with Dino, and an assortment of others including old friends and new friends. Hung out with Moses, the Air Drummer and younger bro, and then sat with mice_elf(Bss) in the balcony during the show.

The show was 7/19/74, Selland Arena, Fresno. It was quite a show, and while the playing tonight seemed a little uneven, it was fun. Dino as the single drummer played hard, and Rob Barraco was great as usual. The bass was forward at the beginning of the show, something I enjoy. The sound seemed louder as the first set went on, til it was almost able to drown out the shrill-voiced woman sitting behind us. She didn't get that we wanted to hear the Playin' jams...

I left toward the end of He's Gone; that song gets me every time, and I know I missed a lot of songs I would have liked to hear.

Yes, kinda uneven first set. Doug thought it must be a free-range show due to the lack of flow. Playin' jam at the end of the first set was long and interesting. Jeff seemed a bit discombobulated through much of the night, esp. first set. There was something seriously wrong with Scarlet - sounded like someone was playing in the wrong key! Set II was much better - excellent Eyes and WRS, also a good China Doll and Roses, although the latter with no guitar solo.

One of the great Lesh led Spanish Jams ever on this night.  Sinister stuff.

DSO SJ was decent, but couldn't hold a candle to the original in this case.

DSO with JM (fake jerry 2) & Phil @ TXR two years ago was an excellent show.

Been playing around with Good Times today and just listened to three clips of DSO and the Dead version.
