Big wheel turn by the grace of God,

The cash is turning and we play slowed down
Love this band or not, it actually is pretty bittersweet to finally be reaching this point. We joke about it, and of course tickets have gotten too expensive pretty much EVERYWHERE, but DeadCo gave us the a chance to still have those big outdoor summer tours. Tens of thousands of Heads in a stadium seeing these guys. On the one hand it’s a hassle to see the boys at Wrigley Field. But then again, we’re seeing the boys at Wrigley Field!! Where the Cubs play! Fenway! Now that’s a party! Forget the Red Sox, make way for the DEAD and thousands of Deadheads! There’s something about the big massive scale of stadium shows like that, which is pretty awesome and its own way and can’t be duplicated. The Heads are taking over your football field!
And, again we can joke about Drumz and Space, but there’s nothing like a full-on Drumz and Space in a big open-air outdoor setting, with Mickey in full Spock mode, with all the lights and lasers bouncing off the clouds. That’s a summertime delight.
I’m gonna miss all of that once it’s finally gone, and in less than a year it will be.
Just a wild notion: what if the "form changes" that Billy alluded to on FB have Graham replacing Mayer, Phil replacing Oteil, and Jay & Joe running the rhythm section? LOL. At any rate, this announcement seems oddly way early and weird.
Mickey is a silly boy, but actually, no one can sub for Mickey and do what he does.
There is only one Billy too of course, the way he plays, and the Dead never would have been possible with any other drummer than BK. Phil has said that himself. But, Billy is a drum kit player, and in a pinch you can try to get by with a different solid player. Of course the Dead rose to some of their glory years when Mickey was away in 1972-74. But once the Drumspace era began, no one else on the planet can be “the Mickey guy.” He’s the only one with the crazy mindset, the collection of sonic toys and the knowledge of how to use them.
And of course no one plays guitar in the quirky and unconventional way that Weir does.
Man, it’s sinking in: Once this big DeadCo thing is done, that’s finally the end of the Big Summer Tour where we can still those guys in the big spaces. Wolfpack or Planet Drum ain’t gonna bring that vibe or that kind of draw on that scale.
And I’m a Jerry guy. But there’s still something about seeing Bobby AND Billy AND Mickey together on a big stage with all the bells and whistles. Once that’s gone, it will all slip into the world of tapes and videos and memories of the past, but it’s still great to be able to see it now while it’s still happening in real time.
>> I dunno - Mexico DeadCo is still not on Mayer's website either. Time will tell, as usual.
He was the only member of the band that didn't post the Mexico announcement on his Instagram as well. I'm not convinced there won't be lineup shenanigans for that event
I am in the minority here as I have really enjoyed and appreciate that DeadCo have been playing since late 2015 and have gotten progressively better to me anyway.
I much prefer them to Furthur but I had issues w a Fake Jerry playing w Bob & Phil. I still attended many Further shows , my favorites being 2012 at TXR and 2013 at The Greek.
^^Apparently from Mickey today. I still find it odd that they seem to trying so hard to get/stay in front of whatever they fear may leak and very early at that. Some people love it, others do not, and some fall in between. Nothing serious but I have had a really good time at their shows and it's always great partying down with thousands of other Deadheads to what remains the best songbook in the land. YMMV.
I still find it odd that they seem to trying so hard to get/stay in front of whatever they fear may leak and very early at that
Not sure what you are getting at. To me, it seems like they want to control the announcement of their final tour as opposed to having the rumor mill run rampant. Aside from that it's marketing, the more they beat the drum of the "last tour" the more tickets they will sell. I've enjoyed them this last 7 years and will certainly see as many shows as I can next summer because this will be the last big tour from these guys and then ladies and Gentlemen, the circus will be gone.....
As stadiums go, Oracle/AT&T/ Pac Bell Park is a pretty cool venue for concerts, and with those being "the final" shows they will generate lots of excitement and will likely sell out.
I've never had a problem with this band and have enjoyed to varying degrees almost every show I've seen, so I expect I'll be at one or both of those (as long as they don't cost TOO much).
I am a bit surprised that Weir is completely pulling the plug on this group. I figured if it was Mayer wanting to leave he'd just find another guitar player and carry on. I've always had the impression that Weir just likes to play, and that he enjoys the little venues as well as the big "moving some air" arena/stadium rock type events as well. The Wolf Bros. are fine, but they're neither a big venue band or a rock 'n roll band. I'm betting that if he's up to it he'll put something else together by summer '23.
I hope he does, and I hope it will be decent, because whatever one may think of the qualities of this band, it will be a bit sad to see the BIG SHOW events go away.
>I'm betting that if he's up to it he'll put something else together by summer '23.<
Do you mean '24? This announcement is an early one for Summer '23 but, yes, it does sound like something different (yet similar?) is already in mind at least.
>>>>Well have to say Giants Park is nice choice to end it
I like Giants but GGP would have been better. Anyone want to take bets on Phil showing up for a song or two?
Lance, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere they already said they will do something else until the day they die. I never saw this band but it picked up momentum and introduced new peeps to the experience many of us had.
>>>I like Giants but GGP would have been better<<<
Golden Gate Park would have been a shit-show to produce & secure. Live Nation never wants anything to do with that type of event.
>>>I'm pretty sure I read somewhere they already said they will do something else until the day they die<<<
There is no question that Weir & the others will continue to perform until they simply can't anymore. I was talking about a performing group that is set up to play BIG shows, which is why I'm surprised Weir's not just carrying on with D$C with other player/s.
It would be interesting to know if other than Mayer, are there any other members who wanted out? It's not like it's a full-time gig. I seriously doubt Oteil or Chementi want out. They likely make more money from one D$C tour than they make from five years of playing in other groups, and they still have ample time to play with other or their own groups.
Billy's statement doesn't sound like he wants out, and he has already been replaced at times and that didn't seem to hurt them in any significant way. Would Weir shut it down if Mickey wasn't involved? Maybe, but I have a hard time believing Mickey wants out, as he doesn't do anything until drums/space anyway, and he's clearly always loved the rock star attention. It seems to me that Mayer is the only one who could have a good case for moving on.
There is a large support organization that works with the band, maybe the logistics are more than Weir wants to deal with, but the fans & money are there no matter who is on guitar, and I doubt that Weir has much to do with organization details so that doesn't make much sense either. I know a couple of people who are a part of that organization who are very disappointed they're losing the gig.
Whatever, I'm glad I'm not a huge fan of the band, but I am a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and D$C has re-energized lots of old heads and created many, many new ones, and whatever the relative quality of any big "Grateful Dead Show" group may be, keeping the light burning is a good thing, IMO.
>>>Anyone want to take bets on Phil showing up for a song or two<<<
Ooh, if I was a betting man I would take THAT bet for sure. I don't think there's any way Phil would want to do it, and I seriously doubt he would be welcome to do it.
But if he did show up, would Mickey throw drum sticks at him?
Billy's statement doesn't sound like he wants out, and he has already been replaced at times and that didn't seem to hurt them in any significant way. Would Weir shut it down if Mickey wasn't involved? Maybe, but I have a hard time believing Mickey wants out, as he doesn't do anything until drums/space anyway, and he's clearly always loved the rock star attention. That would be my guess too (Mayer) but as you pointed out, this isn't a full time gig. I am thinking maybe they want to call it quits an go out on top before someone is carted off field on a stretcher (to use a football metaphor.) The last summer tour saw these guys at the ability top of this band's game. Mickey will be 80 next year, Billy has already missed more shows on one tour than he has his entire life.
Maybe just knowing when to call it quits is the better part of valor here.
I don't think there's any way Phil would want to do it, and I seriously doubt he would be welcome to do it.
Not wanted and not wanting to do it.......makes it easy.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a Bobby and Phil tour, but with who? A small outfit and make more bucks, or go for those orchestral side voicings that have been kind of fun lately?
Also expect Billy and the Kids to do some select shows.
Don't think for a minute that Billy wrote "Billy's statement" or tha Mickey wrote Mickey's. They all have social media people doing this for them, and the posts are always going to be upbeat and rosy. Billy will be lucky to get through the tour at all without Jay Lane stepping in (I think there is a chance they switch back and forth during each show just to let Bill rest up). I'm sure the band likes the payday, but it's possible that somewhat lower post-covid tour numbers, insurance costs (remember when they cancelled Mexico?), combined with continuing health issues among the band, and just the thought that it's been a pretty healthy run (7 years) meant it was a good time to hang it up. That makes sense especially if Mayer's enthusiasm is waning. And since they know this far in advance that this is the last one, you know there was a conversation whether they would do it at all in '23. So, in the end, the compromise was they'd do it one last time and sell as many tickets as possible by advertising it that way.
Bob's the only one I see that has any real road warrior left in him. We'll see him out and about. The others, maybe or maybe not. I'd love to see Planet Drum get more active.
Coming Summer '24: Dark Star & Company, a faithful tribute to the magical mass-market money grab of the Dead & Co. years. Playing (slowly) at a minor-league ball park near you!
6 day break between Gorge night 2 on July 8 and Oracle Park night 1 on July 14 is the longest break of the tour. Perhaps something gets added there? Autzen Stadium, The Greek, Vegas? I'm surprised there are no dates at Red Rocks or Alpine Valley. Perhaps altitude is an issue for Billy at Red Rocks, but three nights in Boulder can't be much better. Tahoe is another thought, but again, altitude.
A free Golden Gate Park show could indeed be a shitshow, but it would be a fine gesture, and Live Nation could probably survive having to eat shit for a day.
Amusing as people wring their hands worried about getting tickets for these shows. It's not like it will be the Grateful Dead at the Marin Civic Auditorium.
>Why the fuck would you have scattered single tickets on a presale?
Money Money...I know, it used to be a smaller 'per order' surcharge on tix. Gone are the days. I have not checked - are these prices higher than they have been or more than the last tour anyway?
The prices seemed 2022 normal. I don't think it was a money thing. Got Friday SF and didn't get Saturday, but I have zero worries about getting tickets to Saturday and if I don't for some reason that is fine too. At this point in my life I would be good hanging out with my friends pre and post show and getting a nap back at the hotel during the show.
Roarshock, I've been thinking recently of the uncertainty of getting 10/30 and 10/31/83 tickets for Marin Civic - how it managed to work out against what I thought were all odds. I was rejected but got in touch with the Ticket Office and somehow it came together. That was something (and I took my parents to 10/30).
I went to Acoma's Sky City and visited their church, the patron saint of which was St. Esteban, and there was a huge painting in the church with what I remember being him and a gated rose garden. I quietly whistled St. Stephen on and off on the trains from Albuquerque to San Diego, and then flying to the Bay Area in late October. The tickets were there when I got there. Magic?
>>>Why the fuck would you have scattered single tickets on a presale<<<
Odd numbered groups of tix get purchased or held & released constantly, often by the scalper bots, which naturally leaves singles, and the TM system will often not allow single tix for sale, especially if they're isle seats or designated as ADA "companion" seats, which many seats next to isle seats are. Plus, most people don't want singles, so singles are almost always left available.
The prices are actually comparatively reasonable, at least for the two in SF, $119.00 out the door for upper deck. I think field tix are around $220.00, and it doesn't look like they have a VIP pit or the field split into sections. Those prices are not as bad as I thought they'd be, especially the SF shows, being THE FINAL SHOWS. They're significantly lower than the Fare Thee Well shows were.
And I think at least the SF shows will sell well and likely sell out, Saturday for sure. Of course there will be lots of tix floating around, but fans & semi-fans of the band, and even just curiosity-seakers will all want to go to those.
I'd put myself in the "semi-fan" category, and just bought a single Friday ticket in my favorite section in the upper deck for $119.00. It's a very comfortable seat, a good home base and easy to roam around and hang with any friends who will be there.
The Saturday show has nothing at the moment, the scalpers likely inhaling everything for that one, but I know I'll get in (as long as it's less than $150, my self-imposed limit for these).
The venue is cool and I know it well so I know the shows will be fun. The music may or not be much, but this band has surprised me often enough to make it a reasonable chance that at least portions will be good, which along with the various ancillary aspects will make it a fun couple of shows.
Well Lance, you took the words right outta my mouth, as far as D&C goes. I'm a probably/maybe to see Friday if I can get in for a reasonable price, Saturday I have vacation plans and I will be able to avoid (some of) the madness...
Re: camping at Folsom. I'm local - no camping on CU campus. No camping around Boulder (unless you want to set up with the homeless people along the creek.) The closest legal camping is about 20 miles away near Nederland and it is very hard to get a site in July. Especially 4th of July weekend.
Also - there was no "Shakedown" last year. CU just wants people to get in and out. There was a pop up Shakedown at Vision Quest Brewing on the night before the first show. Live Dead band and good beer. There are plenty of after parties for people staying in Boulder. Pedicabs were rocking it after the shows.
It has been good to still see a fairly raging Shakedown set up at their CA shows anyway. So far for me, the presale $$$'s on tix are way too. We'll see what it my look like tomorrow but may sit this one out.....and enjoy the feeds and hopeful commentary from Gary & David too ;)
None of my friends felt like going. I was linked in on the pre-sale for Oracle Park, but in the long wait in the queue, a customer needed some help finding some movies, so I logged off. Will put that money towards travel or reconstructive knee surgery instead. It would be nice to get that fixed so I can enjoy shaking my bones at the jam downs in the future. I suppose that if I'm fit enough for the walk from the lot, I can always go out to the Gorge and likely score a ticket. Not really a priority.
Gorge tickets were ridiculous, but when has Dead and Co. sold out that venue? Have patience, don't buy from scalpers, and there will be plenty of cheap if not free tix come showtime.
Ticketmaster, what a scan. I got suckered into "Platinum" tickets on Wednesday, not understanding what it was. After clicking/refreshing for 45 minutes I had finally got something in my cart and bought them. Today, all I saw was "Verified Resale" and all inflated despite best efforts to be on top of it. I am sure they love taking a cut of the sale multiple times for same ticket and in the same hour. I am going with Ken D advice, I know I will be able to find tickets closer to showtime and closer to face. Saw some seats at the gorge going for $9600 a seat as a "verified resale'. What a racket.
I went to look for lawn tix for Lakewood in Atlanta and it doesn't appear the lawn is an option? I was going to pick up a few for xmas presents for friends to have a fun last Memorial Day weekend Sunday show. Does anybody know if the lawn sold out or if it was ever even an option?
oh well. I will wait and see in April if they start showing up. I refuse to pay those reserved seat prices for any band. I have a rule of no shows over $50 face. (festival exception).
It's beyond lame. It really is a big fuck you to a lot of people who booked travel packages. I really don't understand why some politician doesn't drag Live Nation in for hearings. I mean it would be such an easy way to score points. I can't think of another business model that is more hated.
No this is different because of dynamic pricing which is supposed to match ticket prices to demand. They advertised this as the last show of the last tour and created extra demand for the show which increased the price. Then after they took everyone's money they announced another show. Because of dynamic pricing that is straight up fraud. They should dedicate the Saturday show to Lenny Hart I'm sure he would be proud.
My take- If you like the band and can afford to custie up then why not? If it brings joy and doesn't impact ones financial situation who the fuck cares i certainly don't.
most modern shows led by weir unironicly sound better played at 1.25x speed on youtube. i listened to a bunch of the warfield wolfpack show at normal speed and again at 1.25x speed, and aside from a few vocals sounding overly sped up, it makes the songs sound totally rippin, and at the normal tempo you'd expect from a phil show. it genuinely turns alot of that show from a trippy nod-fest into a total rager.
just listen to that eyes and toggle between normal playback speed and 1.25x speed. in this eyes, not even the vocals sound sped up at all - when played at 1.25x it sounds like how eyes should sound - something i can dance to.
toggling between 1.25x speed and normal speed is honestly hilarious. after awhile it starts to sound like normal playbakc must be .75x speed or something.
TBH i started playing that eyes at 1.25x and didnt realize it was sped up until i checked the settings.
^yea, we could do our part to re-enact the worst parts of late-era mega-Dead, with more people in the lots outside partying than there were inside the show(s)! Might As Well?
re: DeadCo @ Mexico - it is "interesting" that Goose is now playing on the Sunday (Jan 15th) instead of the 4-night run by DeadCo that was marketed and sold (and Sold Out at that). It is all being made Nugs available for livestream too, as are the Billy Strings and SCI NYE runs too):

What the fuck will be left? Phish?

Not sure what you are getting at. To me, it seems like they want to control the announcement of their final tour as opposed to having the rumor mill run rampant. Aside from that it's marketing, the more they beat the drum of the "last tour" the more tickets they will sell. I've enjoyed them this last 7 years and will certainly see as many shows as I can next summer because this will be the last big tour from these guys and then ladies and Gentlemen, the circus will be gone.....

Those San Francisco shows
Those San Francisco shows should be interesting.

That would be my guess too (Mayer) but as you pointed out, this isn't a full time gig. I am thinking maybe they want to call it quits an go out on top before someone is carted off field on a stretcher (to use a football metaphor.) The last summer tour saw these guys at the ability top of this band's game. Mickey will be 80 next year, Billy has already missed more shows on one tour than he has his entire life.
Maybe just knowing when to call it quits is the better part of valor here.
I don't think there's any way Phil would want to do it, and I seriously doubt he would be welcome to do it.

Don't think for a minute that
Don't think for a minute that Billy wrote "Billy's statement" or tha Mickey wrote Mickey's.

6 day break between Gorge

What the fuck, it's more than a buck?
None of my friends felt like going. I was linked in on the pre-sale for Oracle Park, but in the long wait in the queue, a customer needed some help finding some movies, so I logged off. Will put that money towards travel or reconstructive knee surgery instead. It would be nice to get that fixed so I can enjoy shaking my bones at the jam downs in the future. I suppose that if I'm fit enough for the walk from the lot, I can always go out to the Gorge and likely score a ticket. Not really a priority.

No this is different because
No this is different because of dynamic pricing which is supposed to match ticket prices to demand. They advertised this as the last show of the last tour and created extra demand for the show which increased the price. Then after they took everyone's money they announced another show. Because of dynamic pricing that is straight up fraud. They should dedicate the Saturday show to Lenny Hart I'm sure he would be proud.

most modern shows led by weir
most modern shows led by weir unironicly sound better played at 1.25x speed on youtube. i listened to a bunch of the warfield wolfpack show at normal speed and again at 1.25x speed, and aside from a few vocals sounding overly sped up, it makes the songs sound totally rippin, and at the normal tempo you'd expect from a phil show. it genuinely turns alot of that show from a trippy nod-fest into a total rager.
take any dead and company song led by bob, listen to it at normal speed and then 1.25x. this jack straw is a good example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCdXyj57HO0
id actually pay money to see 1.25x speed deadco

just listen to that eyes and toggle between normal playback speed and 1.25x speed. in this eyes, not even the vocals sound sped up at all - when played at 1.25x it sounds like how eyes should sound - something i can dance to.
toggling between 1.25x speed and normal speed is honestly hilarious. after awhile it starts to sound like normal playbakc must be .75x speed or something.
TBH i started playing that eyes at 1.25x and didnt realize it was sped up until i checked the settings.

1.25x is actually a little fast to my ear. 1.1 or 1.15 through the Custom menu option usually sounds about right to me, depending on the song.
