BSS, thanks for the recommendations... I have Nokian summer tires on right now and have liked them... only have about 3K miles left on them due to all the touring I did around California and Oregon last year.
Looking at their Hakkepillita (sp?) R5s for my 2006 XC70 AWD wagon, fondly known as "The Mystery Machine".
I don't have snow tires, because I don't drive in snow that often. I need the chains to get up and down this hill I live on, but after that the regular Coopers keep me on the road.
judit, I use weatherunderground.com for local conditions. They have a network of volunteers who have weather stations in their yards, so you can usually get really close to a specific area.
It looks like that station has had 4.34 inches of rain so far in November. Scroll down the pages for stats; you can change them to daily, weekly, or monthly. And you can change the location by clicking on points on the map at the top of the page.
Here's the NWS version... menu on upper left (turn warning on / off, what weather details you want shown, etc). Then can zoom in, hover mouse over stations, see info, or click, get details.
..FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 445 PM PST THIS AFTERNOON... * WHAT...Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...A portion of northwest Oregon, including the following counties, Benton, Lincoln, Linn and Marion. * WHEN...Until 445 PM PST. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 147 PM PST, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain. This will cause urban and small stream flooding. Overflowing poor drainage areas will cause minor flooding in the advisory area. Between 0.5 and 0.8 inches of rain have fallen over the past three hours. - Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 0.8 inches are expected over the area over the next three hours. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... Salem, Corvallis, Albany, Waldport, Lebanon, Silverton, Independence, Stayton, Philomath, Jefferson, Turner, Lyons, Scio, Yachats, Monroe, Wren, South Lebanon, Blodgett, Four Corners and Alsea. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
Thanks very much for new tools - I do use weatherunderground and noaa but hadn't found the spots on them that show accumulated rainfall. It's easier on the computer, I've usually used my phone for weatherunderground. NOAA as a lot to look at.
The weatherunderground station closest to my house says 4.34 inches in November. (No wonder the skylight began to leak).
Ha Ha: 4" and 10" on the way. All melts next week, YEAH!!!
BTW: Agree, only Nokian Hakkapelita. Now 10, was on 9. Only snow tire that grabs road. I prefer studded, but unstudded ok too in other areas. I' am 7k ft in the mountains. Been using since Hakka 1. Still alive to write about 'snow tires'.
Ah, the old high pressure inversion thingy... where it's 40 up in the hills, and 20s in the valley. Then theres the bald hill effect, with the strong pressure gradients giving us offshore winds, so things are better mixed near the passes in the coast range / cascades, at the surface, breaking up that inversion.
We've got rain and/or snow headed my way this evening. I have a doctor's appointment down the hill tomorrow, so rain would suit me better, but any precipitation will be welcomed.
