a rare lineup of 100% top tier glory days friends. no kids, no folksy or bluegrassy players, no randos, no txr nerds, no semi-famous classic rockers, just good musicians who know the music and are capable of heavy hitting improv. should be a good one, especially by 2020's standards.
wish cross country travel was in the cards for me this year.
Been wanting to go to this for years. Thinking this might be the best last Phil Lineup I can see, but Dinosaur Jr is really what seals the deal for me. Tyler Childers is the icing on the cake. So I'm gonna try and make this happen.
As Dinosaur, Jr. had to add the "Jr." to their name after a lawsuit from The Dinosaurs (who's members included Robert Hunter), the irony would be thick. They should call it Phil Lesh & Friends, Jr. if it happens.
Every Christmas jam in all years prior I just was unable to go, due to financial constraints, car, family, school, and I'm stoked I can pull it off this year
I’m with Doc Benway: THIS Phil lineup is more like it, finally. In short, no inside-track wannabes, no boring and limited “roots” players, just serious proven badasses.
And yet, there's no way to know if the band will be any good until they actually go "outside" and the audience finds out if they know their way around.
Except for those who only react to names of course.
Also, every time I've used Ticketmaster for an event I've wanted to attend, presale included, the best seats are MAGICALLY sold out the minute they go on sale while the browser is refreshing.
So so so annoying.
But: I did manage to score presale a 200 level seat, so hopefully I can trade closer to day of show or just manage to get to the floor
Ugh : First try there were only 3 200 level sections behind stage. Then I tried again and was able to put 2 GA tix in my cart (thinking I'd sell 1) ... it crashed and burned... maybe they are holding back GAs for public on-sale day?
I had the same issues. Put floor in cart and crashed & burned. Got a seat in 229. Gonna hold and see if anything better pops up day of I can trade for. This is presale, so more tickets will be released.
I know smarter people than myself have revealed why ticket agencies like TicketMaster sucks, but, this is a great reminder.
>>>> fuckin moron whose little toy brain can't fathom
was that a mule B-material reference?
appropriate if so
>>>E knows his jazz
I mean, I'm no expert but anyone who knows me at all would probably tell u that I hold musicians who've mastered what some have reasonably called, the one true American art form, in the highest regard and that I celebrate and support the genre in it's many forms, past and present. (Btw, if any of u aren't familiar with the SF jazz Friday's live video streaming series, it's the best $5 a month you'll ever spend! https://www.sfjazz.org/membership/sfjazz-at-home/ )
But I guess if push came to shove, I'm really more of a rock, funk, and roots music enthusiast.
not sure how much of that or the "fucking moronic little toy" nature of my brain is responsible for the fact that sco might b my least favorite and what I see as potentially the most overrated instrumentalist of all time is, but I'll readily admit it could b cause my grasp and appreciation for whatever musical vocabulary he uses is lacking.
I've been told by those with a much more advanced knowledge of theory than myself that he's some type of diminished scale and chordal wunderkind or whatever.
This is a bit perplexing to me cause even though I'm just a simple didgeridoo player, I typically really appreciate complex, experimental, avante grade and what lance and others have referred to as "outside " music.
Sidetrack shout out to lance for making it out to the residents at the sweetwater last night, always love seeing u make scene, baby.
Anyhow, on top of his obnoxious style, I also really don't care for sco's tone and as much as I don't appreciate his work in more traditional jazz settings, I like him even less in GD ones.
I guess it's cool that's he's into it but, to me, he's consistently the weakest link in every Phil lineup he's been a part of so I'm not sure what "jazzy slick" jams you're referring to but feel free to drop some links to help prove your point.
If u do I'll begrudgingly try once again to listen and enjoy the supposed jazz master when I'd much rather rather listen to j mascis wield one of his trusty jazzmasters, my favorite guitar to play as well btw, through 3 Marshall stacks to break the sound barrier as only he can.
for as a much funkier musician than sco or I once said "everything good is nasty and nothing is good unless u play with it"
Thanks for articulating my assessment of Scofield's playing, GD especially. Does nothing for me and takes up audible space, filling would could be actual space.
I also add Warren to my list of doesn't do it for me in the Phil ensemble context.
I understand y Haynes wouldn't b someone's 1st, 2nd or even 3rd choice preference for a plf lineup these days but it is his Xmas jam so it's kind of a given.
plus, say what u will about him but he's a fairly solid and versatile player who knows the material (cue the "dUuur, sCo DoEsn'T neeD to KnOw the MaTErial!" crowd)
haynes can play strong lead, rhythm or slide guitar and sing lead or harmony vocals all relatively well even if none of them r particularly to your taste.
it would seem he's a well versed addition to any improv heavy, roots rock outfit and he knows how to play ball, whereas sco just seems to b up there playing with himself
I might like Warren Haynes more if I liked the tone of his guitar(s), which I don't, and if his singing fit more of the songs in Phil's shows for me. I don't disagree that he plays a wide range of music fairly well. Every once in a while when he sings like Brent it works for me.
I'm always happy that these guys give other people joy, it just doesn't happen for me.
It was great as always seeing you E. It was cool seeing the Rezzies in such a small setting and I really enjoyed the show overall. I was hoping for a little longer show, but I was satisfied and I thought the last 20 minutes or so was classic dark Residents and was fucking great. I wish we'd had a chance to chat more, but I had to boogie out of there right away and get back home at a reasonable hour.
As for Scofield, to me he never seems to be particularly comfortable with Phil. To my ear his playing is often "stiff" and a bit hesitant, falling back on technically cleaver but preconceived licks and way too much call-&-response, which has a place in open improv but if used too much is just a cheap short-cut.
Over many years I've seen him many times in many different configurations. I've enjoyed him a lot with his own groups and he's clearly a very accomplished top professional with a fat resume, but I've never thought of him as a natural improvisational player, and IMO he's a bit lost in rock 'n roll.
As always mileage will vary.
Anyway, I hope he rips it up with Phil and all who go have a great time.
Agree about Warren's voice being more suited for Brent songs... and how his tone gets old real fast on so many other songs... but that doesn't mean I wouldn't go for the experience and to better educate myself about the finer points, bad or good. ;)
Wow, here in Portland last weekend I witnessed an amazing rendition of Blow Away with Garcia Birthday Band.
Their keyboard player seemed to have an out-of -body experience while singing and his raspy tone was spot-on.
They applied to Skill and Roses... hope they get accepted.
Would it b too crazy to suggest that, as cheesy as they r, perhaps it's time we collectively consider that the Brent tunes may have been the most notable and, in some ways, possibly even the best part of the late 80's GD in hindsight?
I totally understand the hesitation with folks like Scofield & Warren. I know I liked Scofield's playing before he ever sat in with Phil, and have liked his solo records and groups like the Uber Band, but I can't recall one show he played with Phil were he did anything I really liked. On the other hand, and I mean no offense, I'd rather see him than Graham play.
Regarding Warren Haynes: I was on the 1998 Other Ones tour and we got to Alpine Valley a day early and I scored free tickets to H.O.R.D.E. Fest and I saw Warren Haynes & Govt Mule on a side stage. Then of course I saw him on Phil's Fall tour 1999 (but I was still butthurt that Kimock was gone) and then the Quintet from 2000-2002. I've seen Govt Mule probably about twice since then. He's a good musician, knows the material, and I actually think he's probably the lesser of evils for this band, even if I understand folks who don't like his tone or his vocals (I don't really myself). He does great with the Brent songs, and that is what helped me like him in the beginning.
I love music, and I'm just happy this Phil lineup isn't Graham lesh and the Dishwasher crew, although to each their own. Hopefully they sing very little and play lots of guitar solos, and I'll be happy as can be.
By the way, you know which friend I like the very least and have a big aversion to? Chris Robinson. Probably my very least favorite vocalist & guitarist to play with Phil. Thank God he's not gonnna be there!
I love Sco but not with Lesh. Even jazz folk are mixed on the flanged tone, Mike Stern and Metheny too, they got with pedals and there are always purists who hate change.
I love Sco on Joe Henderson's Miles tribute, title song:
Sco is great with Phil but it depends on the other guitarist, someone who is very GD familiar and can hold those pieces down while Sco does Sco. Case in point the May 2014 Cap run with Kadlecik, which were fire.
06 Boca - Larry carried Sco. One of the better Phil shows I have seen. Jazz notes, small fills do not make a jam. No problem with Warren, not my favorite but he knows how to play with a second guitarist with both interweaving leads at the same time. I like my dead music when it spirals into space and not in a unified way but still fluid with each other.
>>>Even jazz folk are mixed on the flanged tone, Mike Stern and Metheny too, they got with pedals and there are always purists who hate change.
I can hang with metheny, I ain't proud of it but from a technical standpoint he and his bands r kinda phenomenal.
>>sco's solos are angular and sharp.
often dissonant too which, once again, I'm not against any of that shit.
I appreciate what Larry Lalonde does in primus.
FZ, james blood ulmer, Adrian belew and Marc ribot r all gods to me.
like I posted earlier, maybe if I had a more advanced knowledge of theory I could better articulate exactly what I find so off-putting about how sco rolls but between that tone and that style, nearly every time he gets going I feel like the barbers reacting to John Mayer in that old Chapelle sketch, "hey yo, stfu!"
Show is in a few days. Anyone else going? What I really want to know: I got stuck with a seat but prefer a floor. Not sure how this venue operates but hopefully I use my jedi magic and get to the floor
We used to frequent the xmas jam but have not been since the last time phil was there. Maybe one time after that. It was always just a free for all, once we got inside we would go find seats and leave our coats and then go find a floor spot. One of my favorite things was walking around the venue really late into the night seeing how many people just couldn't stay awake. I am guilty of falling asleep too, I just did it in my chair.
Thanks for that info, Jim! I am happy if I need to fall asleep I do have the chair to lean on, but yeah, definitely want the floor for Phil. It's a long show-a marathon... If you have any other tidbits, let us know...
I passed on some ticket opportunities because airfares had spiked way too high ... and then also Phil at Warfield got announced (no airfare needed)... but I'm bummed to miss this lineup!
And so it is, it’s Barraco now! That was a smooth change, but I think Barraco makes it better. Great singing voice to add in the mix. Knows the book on a deeper level.
I saw this and went to look at the poster-sure enough, Barraco was listed. Didn't see any posts about it, but actually ecstatic. Barraco is far more interesting to me as a singer & player. I'm extremely excited now. This is my assumed last Phil gig-so Barraco makes it much much better for me.
Have so much fun Paul!>>>

Thank you! I look forward to the next time we cross paths. Have a blast at the Warfield!
I went for the stream, which I'm glad I did. Part of the bonus was getting a free stream from the "Orange Peel" tonight. George Porter and friends just played a set with Rob Barraco on keys!

Looks like a great setlist. Lager... glad you were finally able to get to one of these Warren Xmas shows. The crowd pic is interesting. Speaking strictly for me, they do not look to be in the happiest of moods in Asheville. Not a lot of smiles. https://youtu.be/MuaA06eW4Nw
>And the 3 women around him in sunglasses? How are their balls?<
Well traditionally in the South, the slightly-malnourished /indoors-sunglasses /sunken-cheekbones-look completes the "I just forged a check!" fashion statement --- which takes balls (forging a check). So I guess theirs are fine.
TOD > If my comment was interpreted as a criticism, I did not mean to offend anyone on this thread -- I too, had noticed their features in the same ways as Alan, and was merely remarking that I noticed it....
.....given that I have always lived with extra weight and was schooled by my Spanish aunties to eat and cook delicious Catalan dishes and to always feed anyone who's hungry, that is perhaps why I noticed their prominent cheekbones that make them more photogenic. ;)
Changing the subject -- Paging Langerado: It looks like fans in the front weren't dancing much, at least during Mason's.. true?
wait - we can't pick on North Carolina hippies? What do you think Maryland, DC, Virginia, and West Virginia hippies do? (Those hillbillies think we're all Yankees and we're below the Mason-Dixon line I'll have you know.) If it weren't for their moonshine, I'd never stop when passing thru. Hell, at one time all the people now in South Carolina didn't even want to hang out with those rednecks and demanded the original State of Carolina be split in two. That's how awful they can be.
It's totally insane to me that Phil can still play shows like this but he just...chooses not to>>>
Capitol Theatre gets Phil(Grahame) & Friends playing with unrehearsed players like the lead guitar from Goose for $140.00 general admission charge. Nothing against Goose guy, but....
I had a fantastic time at my first Christmas Jam. My daughter had a performance friday night, so I drove 5 hours down on Saturday. I go to Asheville a couple times a year, but it had been a while since my last trip. Downtown was packed to the gills with xmas jam fans, even saw Lou Barlow & Murph from Dinosaur Jr walking around when I pulled into town. Met another long time zoner at my hostel; Mark, former user name was Bonnaroo2-he was a nice guy and we talked about the zone and he gave me a screenshot so I could try to get to the floor. Thanks Mark!
I was stoked to see Dinosaur Jr, Tyler Childers, Govt Mule, and Phil. All very much delivered. Scott Metzger was also awesome. The music started at 7 pm and ended at 2:22 am, and music pretty much played the entire time. It was a quality production and a packed house.
I haven't seen Phil in a while because he doesn't get that close to me and the last few times I saw him I was kinda depressed at the band/performance. So I took this opportunity to make this my last time. I had a great time and he played wonderful. Unlike the Q, Warren really was the captain of this ship and thankfully provided guitar solos when Scofield felt kinda tentative.
In fact, I'm actually a big fan of Scofield, but for whatever reason, he was the weakest link, if any criticism is to be had. He played out of key more than once, not sure why, tended to not really deliver confident guitar solos, and really didn't always provide good rhythm when Warren was soloing. I'm not sure what was going on. A few times, he did deliver, but overall, he was subdued.
Barraco, Molo, Phil, & Warren had great chemistry, and it was the best Phil show I've seen in a decade. Since I've only seen a few in a decade, that's not saying much. It did at moments remind me of how much I took for granted going on Phil tour 1999-2001, and it was wonderful to bask in the deep bass notes and the spaces between the songs.
I was suprised that most of the crowd stayed for Phil, and I'm glad they did. I did manage to get to the floor during Gov't Mule (that was a fiasco, let me assure you) and it was pretty packed down there, not much room for dancing, but those in the know kept the groove alive.
Fantastic time-Xmas jam is something I'll be hitting every year it continues, I am confident about that.
Some reasons could easily include that he's not as familiar with, fond of, or stylistically suited to play this music as the other guys in this lineup.
a really bold and potentially flat out sacrilegious reason to suggest would b he's possibly not as good a musician in general as the other guys in this lineup.
but I've done more than enough sco bashing in this thread to the point I feel it's worth mentioning that I agree with the opinion that this may have been one of his best performances with Phil to date, mostly for the reason that he was more tentative in his approach.
i don't think he really fucked anything up.
the set as whole was a bit dry and lackluster compared to scorching pl&f performances in the past but it had its moments and most of them were sco's finest moments:
the shakedown outro jam, the walrus outro jam, morning dew and slipknot, etc.
for being the Q minus one the sum of the parts felt more like the Q minus 10.
still, it was nice to hear a lineup without Grahame.
>>>He played out of key more than once, not sure why, tended to not really deliver confident guitar solos, and really didn't always provide good rhythm when Warren was soloing. I'm not sure what was going on. A few times, he did deliver, but overall, he was subdued<<<
Of the 12 - 15 times I've seen Scofield play with Phil, that is almost word-for-word what I walk out thinking, every time.
>>>I'm not sure what was going on<<<
I get the sense that's what Sco is usually thinking when he's walking out as well.
>>>it was nice to hear a lineup without Grahame<<<
I'm not a huge fan of Grahame's at all, but because of circumstances I've seen him play with Phil over the years more times than I can count, and I would take a 2022 Grahame in a Phil band over Scofield every day & twice on Sundays. The only thing Scofield does better for me than Grahame is NOT sing, as Grahame's singing generally bugs the hell out of me.
But over the years he's improved dramatically as a player, he knows the music intimately and if the band has a good lead player and doesn't have too many other guitar players Grahame is a fine rhythm player.
BTW, excellent review Lager, thanks for the effort.
Also: yeah, I think Brothers Osborne was cookin'. I doubt I'll listen to their record but as a live show they were hot. The brother who plays guitar rips

for as a much funkier musician than sco or I once said "everything good is nasty and nothing is good unless u play with it"

I might like Warren Haynes

Agree about Warren's voice
Agree about Warren's voice being more suited for Brent songs... and how his tone gets old real fast on so many other songs... but that doesn't mean I wouldn't go for the experience and to better educate myself about the finer points, bad or good. ;)
Wow, here in Portland last weekend I witnessed an amazing rendition of Blow Away with Garcia Birthday Band.
Their keyboard player seemed to have an out-of -body experience while singing and his raspy tone was spot-on.
They applied to Skill and Roses... hope they get accepted.

I totally understand the
I totally understand the hesitation with folks like Scofield & Warren.
Also: Hi JLP-thanks-I'll try and take some!

I had a fantastic time at my
I had a fantastic time at my first Christmas Jam.
Fantastic time-Xmas jam is something I'll be hitting every year it continues, I am confident about that.

every. Single. Time.
>>>for whatever reason
Some reasons could easily include that he's not as familiar with, fond of, or stylistically suited to play this music as the other guys in this lineup.
a really bold and potentially flat out sacrilegious reason to suggest would b he's possibly not as good a musician in general as the other guys in this lineup.
but I've done more than enough sco bashing in this thread to the point I feel it's worth mentioning that I agree with the opinion that this may have been one of his best performances with Phil to date, mostly for the reason that he was more tentative in his approach.
i don't think he really fucked anything up.
the set as whole was a bit dry and lackluster compared to scorching pl&f performances in the past but it had its moments and most of them were sco's finest moments:
the shakedown outro jam, the walrus outro jam, morning dew and slipknot, etc.
for being the Q minus one the sum of the parts felt more like the Q minus 10.
still, it was nice to hear a lineup without Grahame.
long live Xmas jam and long live pl&f!
