He knows a few Dylan tunes. Not many but a few. It's more of an image thing for him than a musical experience through 500 or so songs. It looks like he maybe puts in about the same effort with facts and politics. Speaking strictly for me of course on both matters.
I “knew” Jackie before called himself a troubadour. During those days he was young, shy, and rarely spoke about anything other than music with me. He struck me as very impressionable and eager to learn everything music. After he turned 21 and began playing in the Sacramento bars, his focus always seemed to be establishing a musical career. While his songwriting and technical abilities were good for his age, he impressed me more with his work ethic and ability to learn quickly. The latter could be why Phil was able to immerse him to the point where he learned 80 Dead tunes in a week or so and was good enough, in Phil’s opinion, to have him join an iteration of Phil & Friends almost immediately after.
I lost touch with Jackie after he signed with Verve and only saw him briefly a few times after he left his local manager. The times I did see him, he had grown into the kind of “rock star” life he was leading before he married and settled down. Even though he lives around here again, I seldom see him. His current drummer is still part of my extended family, so when I hear about Jackie, it’s usually through him. While younger than me, but older than Jackie, I know the drummer’s views on such things as vaccinations, politics, etc. I would not be surprised if some of his ideas have rubbed off on Jackie, but I also would not presume to know where he gets his information about such things.
I always thought the science around vaccines was settled. At least that is what I learned in college. I have a couple doctors who I respect and trust. I don’t feel they would give me wrong advice or try to steer me into anything other than their interest in my health. Doc says I need a shot. I get a shot. I find it difficult to believe a good doctor would advise against Covid vaccinations unless there was some medical issue for certain patients.
Jackie’s 42 now with a family. He should know better, but I can only speculate if he is anti-vax, it is due to misinformation. I hope he and his family stays safe and, IMO, he still is a very good musician.
It's like a whole bunch of people woke up to the fact that big pharma does not have out best interest in mind and then decided everything they do is designed to kill us. There is a middle road. The truth is as with anything you ingest down to Tylenol you could be one of the unlucky ones.
You can blame public health government messaging but the real problem is the media that will over exaggerate any and all problems and will pounce on government officials if they ever say anything wrong or contradictory. That is not a good recipe when you are dealing with something new that we have no idea about, because if the government ever got up there and said we just don't know, but here is a reasonable guess that might turn out to be wrong the media would crucify them.
Everybody is making fun of the idiot Chinese but what they did was reasonable based on past SARS viruses that came on the scene and then mostly went away. The problem is they got caught up in buracracy disease of never being able to pivot once you make a decision, and the fact that their bet was so wrong and they will have to pay a huge price for it now.
I believe in vaccines. Though I remember when I was on tour though it was fashionable to question everything the gov said.
In regards to Jackie, I don't know him, but I know and have hung out with lots of musicians. Most I know have wild views on all kinds of stuff, and rarely are they well informed. In fact, its almost as if they are good at music but that the talent required for that doesn't really always translate into "enlightened" individual. Most keep it to themselves when around fans, but share their thoughts more around friends.
But man we want our idols to be enlightened, of course. Personally, it sucks getting to know a musician I like and realizing they have stupid ideas and are all too mortal.
I guess what I am saying is: musicians are humans and humans are wildly inconsistent and often don't fit into the boxes we prefer. It just sucks when that stuff hurts or kills people. Like: I personally don't get doubting the efficacy of vaccines or their benefits to the public. Measles sucks. But when they work, people don't feel the threat and feel free to disbelieve them. Which is wild, and stupid.
