Holiday storm 2022

Forums:

Paging Noodler!

24 degrees in Portland now with wind gusts ranging from 16-37 mph!

Tomorrow the high will be 25 and snow is supposed to begin in the evening, lasting through Friday night... freezing rain is possible, and Portland is known for its epic ice storms that shuts the city down.

Looks like the midwest will get hit hardest.

Travel safe, zoners... watcha got?

The forecasts I've seen have for Portland and the Gorge have been nasty, very nasty. Cold cold cold. Yes, freezing rain, with precipitation to follow. Stay safe out there.

Eugene's high on Thursday is looking a little warmer than it had been, supposed to be 32˚-33˚.

NOAA says:

...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON THURSDAY TO 7 AM PST FRIDAY...
* WHAT...Significant icing expected. Total ice accumulations of around one tenth to one half of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
* WHERE...Central Coast Range of Western Oregon and South Willamette Valley.
* WHEN...From noon Thursday to 7 AM PST Friday.
* IMPACTS...Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be difficult.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Temperatures appear most likely to warm above freezing late Friday morning.

23 now - hope it will get above freezing today.

Then a day of ice before the warm and wet returns.

Longest, coldest night of the year. - 13 (but it's a dry cold)

20221222_070432_copy_600x943_0.jpg

Low 40s and high 30s incoming to Ft. Myers this weekend and next week

iguana's will be falling from the trees

^^^^ What a sight!

Judit do you have the high winds too?

Terrible.. they didn't pause all night.

I need to drive to west side in the PM, but at least it's before the snow/ice will begin.

20 degrees now

its 58 in my house...

No snow no ice. Below 0 wind chill coming to the gulf states.  There will be a lot of frozen and busted pipes.

So far so good.   Cold and blustery but we still have power and just stayed bundled up when outside.  We have to go out to the airport tonight to pick up my girlfriend's parents who are flying in from Ft. Myers and if the forecast holds, shouldn't be much issue with the roads until tomorrow.  They will miss the falling iguanas.

We're in Depot Bay (smallest navigatable harbor on the planet), beautifully cold and windy!

Here's the morning weather discussion from Portland;

<<Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Portland OR
530 AM PST Thu Dec 22 2022

.SYNOPSIS...An arctic air mass will remain over the region through at
least Thursday night, bringing the coldest temperatures the region
has experienced since February 2014. A wintry mix of snow, sleet, and
freezing rain will occur late Thursday into Friday, resulting in
significant travel impacts. While most locations should warm above
freezing Friday night into Saturday morning, the Gorge will remain
below freezing with freezing rain lingering through at least Saturday
night. Becoming warmer and wetter next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT...

KEY POINTS...

*  Very cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills will continue
  through Thursday night.

*  A mix of wintry precipitation will spread across the area late
Thursday into Friday. Light snow will transition to sleet and
freezing rain, with accumulating freezing rain expected across
   much of the area.

*  Another weather system will move through on Saturday, with mainly
rain expected and snow levels around 7000 to 8000 feet. The
exception will be in the central Columbia River Gorge, as
persistent below freezing surface temperatures will likely result
in another round of freezing rain and accumulating ice.

Our message remains the same for the upcoming winter storm. Be
prepared for an impactful mix of wintry precipitation and very cold
temperatures, including accumulating freezing rain, through at least
Friday. At 4 AM PST Thursday, a 1040-1050 mb surface high was located
over central and eastern WA/OR. Observed temperatures were around -10
to +10 degrees east of the Cascade crest with wind chills even colder
than that. Temperatures west of the crest in northwest OR and
southwest WA were in the 20s with wind chills in the single digits
and teens, coldest near the Gorge. Wind chills as low as 20 below
zero are occurring in the Cascades. Very little to no warming is
expected Thursday into Thursday night as very strong low-level
offshore flow continually advects a fresh supply of arctic air from
east of the Cascade crest and strong winds maintain dangerously cold
wind chills. Therefore, Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories remain in
effect for the Cascades, the Gorge, the Cascade foothills, the
Portland/Vancouver metro, and the north OR Coast Range. Make sure to
keep your pets warm and take any precautions you may need to take to
prevent pipes from bursting. Anyone who is exposed to the outdoors
and is not dressed properly will be at risk of developing frostbite
and/or hypothermia.

East winds are already gusting to 30-45 mph across the Portland
metro, however winds were only gusting 15-25 mph in Vancouver. Winds
around 50-60 mph are occurring in the western Gorge. Expecting winds
to increase in strength even more later this morning as the pressure
gradient between TTD-DLS increases to around -13 mb. This is when
winds are going to be gusting to around 60-80 mph through the western
Gorge (possibly as high as 100 mph at Crown Point), and 40-55 mph in
the Portland metro (except 20-30 mph from Vancouver northward).
Therefore, a High Wind Warning remains in effect for the western
Gorge and a Wind Advisory remains in effect for the Portland metro.

Now onto the most challenging part of the short-term forecast. A warm
front is still expected to lift across the region late Thursday into
Friday, with a pronounced warm layer aloft moving in behind the warm
front. Given the below freezing surface temperatures, this warm front
will spell trouble and result in a messy mix of sleet and freezing
rain across southwest WA and northwest Oregon. Forecast NAM BUFR
soundings at Portland and Troutdale are now suggesting the duration
of sleet may wind up being longer than initially expected, thus
delaying the transition over to freezing rain. The latest iteration
of the HREF backs this up well and suggests the dominant
precipitation type will be sleet across the greater
Portland/Vancouver metro and east slopes of the Coast Range Thursday
evening through most of Thursday night, before finally switching over
to freezing rain between 2-4 AM PST Friday morning. Freezing rain is
then expected to continue through the day on Friday before
temperatures slowly warm above freezing Friday night, except in the
Columbia River Gorge (this zone is discussed below). Precipitation
should mainly be in the form of freezing rain at the coast, southern
Willamette Valley, and central OR Coast Range where forecast ice
accumulations have increased in these areas as a result. In fact,
decided to upgrade to an Ice Storm Warning for these zones as ice
accumulations as high as half an inch are now expected with minimal
snow/sleet accumulation.

Unlike the rest of southwest WA and northwest OR, the main
precipitation type in the Gorge should be snow and sleet initially,
especially in the central Gorge near Hood River. Still expecting at
least 3-6 inches of snow and sleet in the central Gorge and Upper
Hood River Valley before precipitation finally switched over to
freezing rain Friday night. Below freezing surface temperatures
will most likely persist through Saturday across the Gorge as east
wind continue. This will result in yet another round of freezing rain
and significant ice accumulations as a secondary weather system moves
into the region. Total ice accumulations will likely exceed one inch
over a 48 hour period through much of the Gorge.

When will temperatures warm elsewhere? That will depend on if and
when winds are able to switch directions, from east/north to
southerly. And often, models bring that warmer air in too soon. If
colder temperatures are able to hang on (longer than what the NBM
suggests), could make for some more interesting winter weather later
in the week, including the Portland metro. There is a chance that
temps warm above freezing Friday night, but confidence in that is low
and the actual timing may wind up being around 12 hours later than
that. Although some uncertainty remains with exact timing and exact
snow/sleet/ice amounts, confidence remains high that significant
impacts to travel will occur with this winter storm. Anyone with
travel plans Thursday night and/or Friday should either reconsider
their plans or ensure they are well prepared for a messy mix of
snow/sleet/ice on roads. Still expecting warmer temperatures and
widespread rain on Christmas Eve with rain amounts around half an
inch or more across the interior lowlands and around 1 inch or more
at the coast. Main concern on Christmas Eve will be for the Gorge and
Upper Hood River Valley where freezing rain will likely continue and
bring additional ice accumulations. -TK

.LONG TERM...SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT...The long term forecast
is highlighted by much milder temperatures and plenty of rain. Models
and their ensembles are showing very impressive agreement regarding
temperatures in the long term, and the NBM 1D Viewer backs this up by
showing a very low degree of model spread. In fact, the NBM 25th to
75th percentile for high temperatures generally ranges from the low
to mid 50s Sunday through Tuesday. This is no surprise after
analyzing the WPC's 500 mb heights and anomalies on Sunday into
Monday, which depicts a very strong signal for upper level ridging
across the western United States.

It is unclear how wet or dry we will be during that time, but most
ensemble members from the GEFS/ECM do bring in at least some
precipitation. However, there is a stronger signal for heavy rain
Tuesday into Wednesday as an upper level trough pushes into the
region and brings an impressive surface low with it. Still plenty of
details to be worked out, but it appears we may have some hydro
concerns next week as chances for heavy rain increase.>>

Just lost power at my girlfriend's apartment, but we brought over a portable power bank from my place last night in anticipation of the storm so we can keep the Christmas tree lights on!

Still have power at my office down the road, which is a good thing considering I have a big filing due tomorrow.

No blustery winds, LLOLLO, just some breezes. It's cold and rain is just drizzle so far. I'm able to stay home and cozy.

People without homes are at such high risk - they're on my mind and in my heart.

Stay safe out there.

We got a little snow on the coast, mixed with the rain, but it's just above freezing in Depoe Bay, since there's no river drainage to allow that frigid / dry air to alter the local airmass (vs Newport to our south, which is 5 degrees cooler.

Thanks Judit and Hey Ken, I'm hanging out in South Waterfront hood right now and noticed some power outages when I passed Fryer Tucks / MV hood earlier... went to feed a friend's bird and guinea pigs while they are traveling.

Precip is arriving later than predicted...

Not much snow, but -25 to -30 windchills tonight in NE Ok.  Dallas got a half inch of snow, so they're paralyzed.

^^^ yikes!

made it home, and not driving again until Saturday.

precipitation has arrived -- frozen sleet

I'm very happy you're safe.

Ken, hope your trip to/from the airport is uneventful.

Ice pellets pelleting now in Salem.  Why is this berg in ICE STORM ALLEY.?        ^&^(*&*%^&%$%$^@#$%^@&^%$%*$!!!!!!

Can hear it bouncing off the deck now.

Ice Station Zebra

I unexpectedly got an invite to walk 2 blocks in the sleet storm to meet a couple of new friends for a beer at a very small neighborhood place.

Fascinating conversations.

Since I was there for almost 3 hours, I didn't pay attention to the storm (good thing), and when I left it was a weird walking experience, as it wasn't the usually kind of ice storm that Portland is famous for, but it was a thin layer of white stuff, good traction, easy walking -- but not snow either. The wind is still howling and I walked through a cool bamboo tunnel on the way... love bamboo in the wind, and I don't like windy environments as a rule.  Over the years I've had some epic conversations at pubs in Potland oops, Portland, during power outages and snow storms.

I had a very intense day today (job interview!), so it was good to unwind there.  Will get news on whether I advance to round 2 tomorrow.

It seems like just south of Salem has always been the high point on I-5, the place where the ice or snow stops passage. Ice storm alley, indeed.

^&^(*&*%^&%$%$^@#$%^@&^%$%*$!!!!!!^&^(*&*%^&%$%$^@#$%^@&^%$%*$!!!!!!^&^(*&*%^&%$%$^@#$%^@&^%$%*$!!!!!!

((( LLOLLO advancing to ROUND 2 !! )))

Do you mean the section of I-5 just north of Eugene where those mound-like hills are?

his storm is interesting, because, if I'm reading everything correctly, the cold and wind are hitting us from the north, and the precipitation is moving north from the south end of the valley (3ish hrs to cross valley from north to south)... and they collide between Eugene and Portland.  On Sunday I won't cross over the pass to east side via Oakridge like usual, but will stick to I-5.  Let me know if I should pick you up for some music!  Got room for riders.

...and thanks Judit for the round 2 message! Even though it's still in Portland, it's a more interesting job -- communicating / handling media relations about Portland city government's historic transition to a new structure -- it will be more inclusive and council members will now represent geographic districts. I had an awful, emotional interview day in November and lost the competition for the permanent version of my role with the program I've been representing for the last 8 months, but I was ready to leave that one... this is a better opportunity.  I've been training my replacement for the past 2 weeks, and I thought it would be weird, but we are now friends / confidantes outside of work.

Good night, I'll wave to you on Sunday. ;)

No, the section sort of around the Forest attraction. I can't remember its name right now. Salem is higher than we are.

Isn't this crazy stuff over by Saturday? I thought Sunday will be warmer. I have run into blizzards around Willamette Pass in May and maybe some other unlikely time, you never can tell.

No travel for me this weekend, but thanks for the offer. Have fun! And safe travels.

Good night.

Oh, Enchanted Forest?! Yes, that's at the top of a good slope.

By Sunday it will be too warm for ice... glad to just have to deal with rain on my drive south.

Sweet dreams!

Looks like it gets above freeing here at 11 AM today - then it's a week or ten days of regular rain and temps above 32.

32 forecast for tonight

Stay warm Zoners

Northern Gulf Coast: 64 yesterday, 14 this morning.  40 this afternoon, pattern will hold through Monday.

Well, in Maine currently we have a bunch of rain. Temps in the 50's and winds in the 50's! Gusty as fuck.

Supposed to be thunderstorms early afternoon.
Then tonight it's gonna drop 40 degrees in a few hrs, and freeze everything solid. After 3" of rain, it will be interesting to see where the water stays before freezing.
Typically, this would be snow for us. We don't know what to do with this kind of rain in Dec, neither does the ground.

Trump would have nuked this storm and saved Christmas! GEOTUS!!!!!

Jeez Westies, quit freaking out and throw on a couple more REI fleeces. I know you got like 8 of them hanging in the closet. We just call that regular ol winter around here (Maryland).

Power went off once in the neighborhood already (while I was still waiting to pay in the dispensary but came back on thankfully). We've got firewood, a propane grill to cook on if needed, sleeping bags, booze and charged flashlights, so we can go for a day or two. I'm good with it all except when we have to throw out groceries. If the power stays off too long I have a full tank of gas and we're headed South.

This Afternoon - Partly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 17 by 5pm. Wind chill values as low as zero. Breezy, with a west wind 22 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 48 mph.

Tonight - Partly cloudy, with a low around 9. Wind chill values as low as -7. West wind 14 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph.

Saturday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 21. Wind chill values as low as -7. West wind 14 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.

^ That's funny.

Stay safe. Stay warm (cuddle up). Enjoy your holiday whatever you do.

(And if anyone out there ends up lonely and depressed during the Christmas weekend, post something and I'm sure some pagan or heathen will be monitoring the Zone and send ya a reply to keep ya company and cheer ya up. No sad faces allowed.)

Just drove HW 20 from the coast to Corvallis, easy drive, a few semis in the ditch near Toledo, Philomath / Corvallis still quite icy, but the roads were decent, the sidewalks suck, still a sheet of ice!

We're supposed to get over 7 inches of rain in seven days starting with 2-1/2" on Monday alone. That is a lot of rain for these hills.  Got lots of oak for the wood stove. Will be OK but a little concerned about the drive to Guerneville on the 31st.

The trip to the airport was a bit of adventure.  We wanted to get something for dinner, but everything was closed except for the Taco Bell by the airport.  Trip back from the airport was surreal.  I-84 was virtually deserted with packed ice and snow and trippy swirls of blowing ice rising like fog from the roadway.  The few cars on the road were driving slower than Bob and the Wolf Bros. with their hazards on.  Wind was insane and some of the nastiest weather I have seen in Portland.

Staying in today in Multnomah Village, which at 500 feet is getting more traditional snow.  Walked down to John's Market to get beer (the Village was picture perfect Christmas wonderland) but they were closed too.  Luckily, a local dive bar was open and they sold us some package beer for a fair price.

^^^^Renner's or The Ship for the win (never been to Ship)

^^^^The Ship.  Never stepped into it before today.  Beer was cheap and it was happening.

No snow here.  But enough rain last night that I moved the car to higher ground at around 4am.

There's a 20' length of tree (or limb) snagged on the creek's opposite bank that wasn't there yesterday.  The creek is normally about 2-3 ".   Juuuuuust below street level (about 6') last night.

Looked like a freight train in the dark.

Be safe everyone!

The above-freezing temperatures have decided to spend the night in a Eugene hotel and will be here tomorrow.

So they say.

East coast is in a deep freeze. Can't stand this weather. Dreams of Fiji!

5 degrees here now

Ken - one winter i snowshoed up SW 30th from my house to MV after a big snow storm and a few days w/o power.

it's fun when the neighbors hang out together.

I just heard an update on temps right now -- so weird:

  • 56 in Newport (south of Noodler on the coast)
  • 26 in Portland.

Blame it on the gorge winds

It's was 50 in Newport when we drove thru, after going over that first hill heading east, the temp gradually dropped to 37 near Toledo...   then down to 34 driving up that hill, which it stayed for the rest of the trip, until the hill above Philomath (which was pretty nasty looking).  At the bottom of the hill it was 31, which it's stayed for the last 5 hours in the Corvallis area.  LLollo is right, those pesky gorge winds.  They were gusting to at least 89 mph in Corbet (could be higher), and the anemometer got blow off at Crown Point.  Creswell is the first city to warm in the W Valley, but it's been a much slower process than the models predicted (which is almost always the case).

30th Ave in Eugene this morning.

Frozen 30th Ave. 12 23 22.jpg

Big wind and rain last night and this morning. The roar kept me awake most of the night - like a freight train. Some lightning as well - couldn't hear the thunder over the wind. Weird thing was that there was almost no wind at ground level - 750 ft. elevation for us -  but the tops of the 130 ft. fir trees were bending almost 45 degrees. Also weird: stars visible above the thin but incredibly fast moving cloud layer. Wind seems to be backing off a bit at the moment.

Btw, seas forecast at up to 34 feet.

Cowabunga!

Wow Surfdead glad you are safe, given all the big trees around you.

It was weird to see cars strewn about I-5 between Portland and Eugene ... ice spin outs and some fire incidents.
