Fine show from the last of the 4 year run of 5 night stands for NYE. From Wikapedia....
From 1967 through 1989, the Grateful Dead, an American rock band, performed at the convention center 57 times. Their first 23 concerts at the convention center were billed at "Oakland Auditorium", and later, starting in 1985, the venue changed to "Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center". In the 80's the band started performing "runs" of shows over the course of three to seven days.
On the Road>Deal is on of my favorite 1st set runs of the early 80's.
Shakedown,Garcia starts w/ the 2nd verse, same w/ Weir on Samson. opening verse of Terrapin also very shaky, recovered later w/Dew & the 2nd and last time I saw the band return for a 2nd encore.

Listened to set II last night
Listened to set II last night - Morning Dew still one of my favorites.
I went the night before and witnessed one of the hottest Dead shows I can remember. That along with the Greek 5-22-82.
1982- still their best year as far as I'm concerned.

'82 was definitely a good
'82 was definitely a good year for the band. It was also really the last year of the more gentle, articulate style they'd had for over 10 years, with '83 seeing Bob switch to his yowling, killing cats guitars & style, Phil switch to the more "busy" 6-string bass and Jerry switch from serious head to full-blown junkie.
I was at three of this run, and I enjoyed them but they were marred by my epic encounter with Bill Graham outside the venue before the 1st night.
Being screamed at by Bill Graham for two solid minutes will leave a mark. Having a sensitive constitution, it took me a while to get over that.
Still, this was a fine run of shows at that old, sweaty-walled dump.

What in heavens name did you
What in heavens name did you do to piss off Bill enough that he yelled at you for two solid minutes?
Though witnessing him tear into more than a few fans who had broken rules (written and unspoken), I am grateful that I was always well enough behaved to escape Bill's wrath.

I didn't do a damn thing. A
I didn't do a damn thing. A guy behind me in line screamed at him and Graham thought it was me. Next thing I know, Bill Graham is yanking on my leg (the walkway into the Oakland Aud was a few feet above the street) and my face was being blasted off by the sheer ferocity of his rage.
Graham was legendary for his rants, but those who knew him would tell you that there were two types; most were more an act to manipulate a situation, less were the real deal, when he was REALLY pissed.
I received one of the latter.
It upset me so much that I wrote him a letter about it and he responded with an apology, which people who knew him have told me was pretty rare.
So I have that going for me.

'82 was the first year I saw
'82 was the first year I saw them so of course I have that, but I've read a few people (who had been going to shows for years),
say that the '82 fall tour really was the last really strong one, before Jerry pretty much went over the edge...
You can see from pictures/video the change that happened between the Frost at the beginning of October and these shows 3 months later...
On the Bill Graham note, the first time I saw him in person was outside of the HJ Kaiser on NYE '86. (Woah, 36 years ago today).
He was screeching at the top of his lung at someone for some perceived infraction, and a guy near us on the sidewalk yells out,
"Happy New Year to you too, Bill!"
Good times for sure. I miss them, and I miss him. He was in many ways a shyster, but he was Our shyster...

Wow.....I commented on this
Wow.....I commented on this show years ago as being one of the best pre NYE shows on various runs. It was a barn burner and left the venue with a sun burn. I believe the double encore was one of very for any pre NYE show. Fucking Killer!!!
Thanks for posting this.
In memory of my friend Larry Kliedman who passed on 2 years ago and my good buddies Eggman and H2. We drove from New Platz New York to Oakland departing 2-3 hours before the snow storm chased us all the way to trukee..We arrived with 5 feet of snow piled on the sides of the highway and required chains on your tires to continue. We stopped for breakfast and 2 hours later they opened the roads. It Was pretty much a straight 80 hour drive with a stop at pizza hut in Vegas. My back and ass was never the same. Good fucking shows!

My first run was 81/82...
My first run was 81/82....Dark star NYE. Those shows were all so laid back but true to form. Jerry's voice was so youthful. Rained most every day. Got Bronchitis hanging in the cold rain. I survived. but Ran out of money and had to apply for government food stamps to get by.. Took me weeks to recover. Great time and all par for the course..loved the shows and the camping site just outside the venue.
