Bob Dylan – Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17

Forums:

Holy mother of God. One of the best albums of the 90's and of Bob's illustrious career receives an incredible release. What I've heard so far on streaming is first-rate, particularly the reworked versions of Love Sick and Red River Shore. I posted a track from this release in the Jan tunes thread.... not dark yet version 1

Excellent, thank you

my favorite Dylan album

The video for Not Dark Yet is fantastic.  https://youtu.be/3t2su8xEDEU

the Bootleg Series Vol 8 has long been my favorite release of the series.
Can't tell you how excited I am for this new, better, plunge into that period!
Pinnacle of Bob output, arguably.

I AM Getting This.cool

Great idea on including some live tracks. They should actually do a standalone box set of live performances from the 1996 to 2021'ish window. It's certainly warranted.

David Kemper seems to have plenty of time on his hands. Maybe he can put it together.

Yea hopefully they can manage some better quality recordings than vol 8. It's a killer set but they dropped the ball on most of the live cuts.

So I spent the night with the new box.... disc 4 is a total mess... the sonic wizards of the fan based releases are masters and set the bar higher than BD camp achieved here. Not unexpected...

discs 2-3 are incredible and stand-alone albums imho. The remix disc 1  is better than I expected and is a nice change from the Lanois swamp which we are all used to...

Here's a good listening guide for those grabbing the set. or those thinking about it. Or those not

From the liner notes

" the story of Time out of Mind really began on August 9,1995"

yup, this is a good one. Best Bootleg Series in a long time.....despite my thoughts on the live material sourcing.

Can even make out the lyrics.  Nice groove throughout.  Pleasantly surprised as these selections are from a different era than I typically zero in on.  Thanks for posting this thread.  What an incredibly unexpected satisfying piece of ear candy for a Saturday afternoon in January.   I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from... .

So in my estimation, the meat here is disc 2-3, the remaster notwithstanding. The live set is garbage compared to what is available and put together by any avid fan and 5 is duplicate material from BS8….

What a great set 2-3 is tho…. Awesome. Water is Wide is just breathtaking

The live stuff sounds like audience recordings.

They are

I dig the live recordings here. They are a bonus and certainly capture the flair of the live performances from this period.

It does beg the question, how often is/was Bob recording his own shows in a soundboard-like fashion? Not much is out there. Either they keep the recordings locked down tight or Bob just doesn't care in the first place.

I suspect they exist despite the claims. He likely doesn't like the dry boards, they do sneak out from time to time. The issue I have is that for many of the tracks, we know of much better for almost all of it. HIt's also a interesting juxtaposition when you consider his attitude toward taping in that era

Thanks for the heads up, it's up on Tidal now.

Cheers!
