Post for Friends Only. There's a single report in the news that my friend David Crosby has died. I am trying to confirm, but please don't overload me with DMs linking to that article. If it's true, I'm very sad about it and wish love to you all.
Variety is also now reporting it based on the same press release from Jan cited by News Direct earlier.
Dude should have died back in the early 1980s when he was way deep into freebase. Getting busted was probably the best thing that happened to him duing that time:
Croz also had the most wicked fringe leather jackets:
Saw him so many times, favorite was early 90s, Palace Theater, Albany with Nash. He had more than 9 lives, and lived well beyond anyones expectations including his own.
If NW Zoners remember Portland's old Pine Street Theater (later renamed to La Luna), I got to see David play at one of his first solo performances after being released from prison... amazingly there were fewer than 50 fans there...and then he called up Bonnie Raitt to play a couple of tunes during the set break... I had been dancing next to her, practically with her, and didn't know who she was...
It is with a deep and profound sadness that I learned that my friend David Crosby has passed. I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together, the sound we discovered with one another, and the deep friendship we shared over all these many long years. David was fearless in life and in music. He leaves behind a tremendous void as far as sheer personality and talent in this world. He spoke his mind, his heart, and his passion through his beautiful music and leaves an incredible legacy. These are the things that matter most. My heart is truly with his wife, Jan, his son, Django, and all of the people he has touched in this world.
After growing up a fan of David Crosby's music, he became my closest older friend. I'm heartbroken to lose him. But the arc of our friendship was perfect. Please listen to the Osiris series we created together, with tons of rare music. Goodbye, buddy.
Brenda Carson's older sister turned us on to his music back when we were oh 13 or so. Probably the Woodstock album first. Been seeing him live since the 74 CSNY tour at Cap Center and always left his shows with my spirit uplifted.
Some of the Bay area Seva benefit concerts were really fun (especially that 1998 ? show at Berkeley CC with Phil and Nash); so were shows at Fillmore and Marin Vet. But surprisingly I saw a very notable performance this past decade (2014) at some fancy casino in Atlantic City with CSN. He still sounded great.
The worse Crosby show I saw was in 83 at the Wax Museum in DC when he left the stage at random times during the show to get fucked up backstage. And didn't come back on stage for a long while each time and then just babbled a lot. Then he left early. This was between the time he got arrested and convicted and he was really twisted.
"Soundtrack of my life" caliber. He will be missed.
I got to meet David at a ABA booksellers convention in Anaheim, 1988, I think. He was one of the bands they had for the entertainment. Somehow I found my way into a receiving line after the show.
Walked up to him and shaking his hand, said "David, I love you for a lot of reasons. "Page 43" is just one of them." He looked me in the eyes and smiled and said "Thanks, man." That was that.
RIP to one of rock's important pioneers. Such a talent. Such incredible music.
Just Yesterday I happened to be randomly thinking of the Bill Graham Memorial show, which included CSNY, (and which I was grateful to be on scene, front row).
What crossed my mind was Crosby's story about going to Bill's office and hitting him up for money for drugs. He said he'd pay for rehab for him
but he wouldn't give him a dime for dope.....weird timing on that "flashback".
I saw him a bunch of times from the mid-80's onward, and always felt he was the one that had "it".
When he opened for the Dead on NYE '86, four months after getting out of prison, he basically said:
"If you're going to mess with drugs and guns, don't do it in Texas."
My heart broke last evening learning David Crosby has passes on to a better place. Since my earliest remembering's of a small portable am radio, Croz was always there with his harmonies and guitar ready to make me sing a long. What a big beautiful smile David has: You can not look at him without smiling back. Few have ever taken me on a ride like Croz and friends have done over the years. Thank you so much Croz for sharing your soul with the world. In France, 1975, at bars hearing French guys play CSN in front of Americans, Brits, Danish, and rest of the mix. was a big part of my youth (music was fine, but those French guys never got the words correct. , So much fun, laughter and friendship). David, you will be missed and so will CSN, one of my favorite bands. What an innocent line at Woodstock: "We are scared shitless." Kind of says it all about life. David, your music will carry on!!! R I P
The soul of CSNY, David’s voice and energy were at the heart of our band. His great songs stood for what we believed in and it was always fun and exciting when we got to play together. ‘Almost Cut My Hair’ ‘Dejavu’, and so many other great songs he wrote were wonderful to jam on and Stills and I had a blast as he kept us going on and on. His singing with Graham was so memorable, their duo spot a highlight of so many of our shows.
We had so many great times, especially in the early years. Crosby was a very supportive friend in my early life, as we bit off big pieces of our experience together. David was the catalyst of many things.
My heart goes out to Jan and Django, his wife and son. Lots of love to you. Thanks David for your spirit and songs, Love you man. I remember the best times!
Our grasp is so fragile the thread is so thin
I wonder each day if I'm blowing away
I know that I'm lucky
I wouldn't be here at all if somebody's hand
Hadn't been where I stand
At the edge of a very great fall
And like a lighthouse before you at the edge of the sea
The woman whose grip holds when you slip
But the darkness won't get you
Your family won't go
They will make your heart light
To where you know what is right
And you go where you know you should go
And it's life and it's dying
It's beginnings and end
It's what did you do
With the life they gave you?
It's were you the honest, and
Did you make amends
To all the ones under your guns
How have you treated your friends
