Has any rock star done more coke than Stephen Stills?

Forums:

I've been in a CSN wormhole since Crosby died. And I read an interview with Stills where he was talking about drug use through the years.

1969: He said everyone was snorting cocaine for the debut album. Which probably meant he was doing it in Buffalo Springfield.

1974: The CSNY tour is legendary for its cocaine use. Around this time Stills was so zonked he was convinced he was a Vietnam veteran and was signing his autographs "Stephen Stills, U.S. Marine Corp."

later 70s: He said his Manassas tour and some of his other solo tours were more drug-addled than the 74 CSNY tour.

80s: Goes without saying

90s: I read Sammy Hagar's autobiography years ago and he said he wanted to get Stills to come down to one of his birthday bashes in Mexico. He called up Stills' manager and was told "Well, Stephen likes coke." So Sammy when and got him some, but Stills came armed with his own. Sammy wrote that Stills "crashed into Cabo like a tsunami and inhaled all of the tequila and blow he could get his hands on." There were guys from Guns N Roses and Metallica there and Stills was the last one standing. He had to been in his 60s.

Decades of cocaine use and God knows what else. The dude is a fucking legend but I don't know how he's still alive.

Is this a volume or longevity question?

If you're gonna' party, you might as well party 'till you can't party no more.

Keef is in the Mount Rushmore of partying rock stars but I think a lot of his exploits were exaggerated too. Plus I think he's been relatively clean for 10-20 years or more.

Stills probably is now too. But that run of cocaine seems unrivaled.

The last time I saw stills he was with Judy Collins a few years ago, and a few latter day CSN shows, his voice is shot but mostly it seems like it's due to hearing loss not vocal chords or range control. Still great on the axe tho

Rick MF James in landslide.

Those Fleetwood Maccers used to put that powder up their noses like nobody's business.

He played at my college in 76-77 time frame and had a nose bleed at the piano LOL.  Had to stop the show.  Lost a ton of respect for him right then.  Got it back big time at the GD Meadowlands sit in shows in 83.

Saw Stills at the Fillmore, maybe 1997'ish. He was pretty wasted, right from the get-go. He had really ballooned up as well, wearing a huge Tommy Bahama shirt that draped over him like a tarp.

Very good show though.

Never heard CSN nor CSNY.  Crosby/Nash tour with Felder at guitar was great.

Stills twice.  His solo tour in Tallahassee, great.  Also we were on the Outlaws guest list who opened.  Stroll up to will call "Realeyes Band on guest list". It was a moment.

Manassas in Tampa, poor Steve was wasted but seemed more drunk than coked.  Hillman had to shoulder the gig.

My dealer friends in college consistently got back stage at Dead shows in the early 80's by bringing an ounce for the band. I wouldn't underestimate their ability to hang with the best of them.

Caught Manassas at the Festival of Hope in 1972. While their set was uneventful, Stills' sit-in with the Airplane later on followed what must have been an epic backstage session. He was barely able to keep his feet, and Jorma was just chuckling and shaking his head in amusement (or something).

Apparently, Robert Christgau was on a lawn chair at the show as well.

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

David Crosby

Don Henley

Ozzy Osborne

Steven Adler (got him kicked out of Guns n Roses)

Funny, now I look Back, out of the hundreds of shows I hit , in the 80's only got shut out once, medowlands  got in for night 1, shut out of night 2, had an eightball and a hot GF went to the car and, well, you know

LOVE THE ONE YOUR WITH...

>>>Crosby/Nash tour with Don Felder on guitar

Felder talks about that in his book and how Crosby was way into coke and was starting to get really paranoid.  Said Crosby would go around with a briefcase of cocaine and one night Felder stopped into Croz' dressing room unannounced to say hi and Crosby was hovering over the briefcsse and gave Don a death stare like don't ever fucking do that again.

If you include freebase, Crosby for the win, although Mick Fleetwood would be a close runner up.  Dude talks about how he literally blew millions and millions of dollars on blow.

And yeah, Stills' voice is shot.

>>>Steven Alder

That dude is a fuck up.  Did so much coke, he sounds retarded.   But rock and roll is a marathon, not a sprint, and Alder managed to burn out in a few short years, so don't think he did as much coke by volume as Crosby, Stills, Fleetwood, etc. over the course of their long careers.

Adler was sprinting and routinely 'went beyond' which led to a coke-induced stroke that nearly killed him, hence the "retarded" outcome. To get kicked out of Guns N Roses at that time for too much drug use is a feat all by itself but I think the stroke came after being booted as he was then on a death wish.

No one likes a quitter.

...how 'bout John Entwistle? Would he have wound up like Adler or worse, had he lived?

I saw Crosby Stills Nash and Santos at Hartford Civic Center.

Yeah he was in that too. Lmao

This is a question for ChatGPT. Can someone please ask it?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Maybe Bowie in the short-term.

Has any rock star done more coke than Stephen Stills?

It is not possible to determine who has consumed the most cocaine among rock stars, as drug use is typically kept private and not publicly reported. Additionally, making comparisons and claims about drug use can be harmful and perpetuate negative stereotypes.

In for the bumps.

ChatGPT comes off like an arrogant little bitch.

I tried to get it to write a Charles Bukowski-style story about Mother Teresa the other day and it definitely didn't like that.

Oh, and John Belushi/Joliet Jake Blues.

Honorable mentions:

George Clinton

Lemmy, even tho he died a while back I think he would probably still measure up by volume

Richard Pryor says hold my free base pipe while I enter the tent I set up in the living room so I don't lose any of the smoke.

If we've moved on from rock stars, Hunter Thompson is a solid contender.

Still with us... and probably high right now.

I love the Coke patch.

Mackenzie Phillips paid for a uninostril. I believe Stevie Nicks did too.  That's got to count for something.

>>>..how 'bout John Entwistle? Would he have wound up like Adler or worse, had he lived?

The Ox died in Vegas the night before the Who's tour opener with a hooker and cocaine. I couldn't think of a better way to go. But if I had to guess, that was Entwistle prepping for the tour like he would've in the old days. I doubt he was doing a ton of coke in his 60s. I could be wrong though.

Of all the ones mentioned, I still think Stills has out-snorted them all. Jerry could be the No. 2 contender though. Consistent use from 72 into the 80s to where his voice was ravaged. Jerry's coke use was probably worse overall for him than the persian. I think he preferred a consistent opiate high and was never a candidate for an overdose. But he was doing coke like a fiend for a longass time.

Didn't Jerry once mention meeting the boys in Aerosmith, and the amount of blow they were doing scared the shit out of him?

I would assume it has to be Sly.

Aerosmith (Tyler & Perry) has to be a solid contender. When asked or in talking about the volumes and quantities, they said "swimming pools full of it."

Have you ever seen ChatGPT and FOM in the same room?

Last time I saw Stills was a decade ago with his band, The Rides. It kinda sucked.

Stills says he won't tour anymore because he is too old to do drugs and its no fun going on tour without them:

When Tyler won a Grammy and they asked him on live TV what he thought he said you know last year I won a Grammy and I still have half a Grammy left.
