Flying thru the air

Forums:

I was photographing a punk triple-bill last Saturday at The Wellmont Theater, Flogging Molly, Anti-Flag and Skinny Lister. This tour is rocking, for sure. I was on the back stage left corner of the stage towards the end of Anti-Flags set and their bassist/vocalist Chris #2 rushed up to me right before their last song and told me to position myself on the riser behind their drummer because he planned to launch himself off of his bass cabinet. It's not often that a member of a band tells me how to position myself for a shoot during the show (has never happened before) so I showed I can follow directions and took this one. Sometimes I have one of the coolest jobs in the world.

Very nice shot.

Also -  was at dinner tonight with a friend and his friend. The guy, who I just met, gets a text and shows us a pic of his wife and daughter in the front row of an empty venue. Apparently the two women are on mom & daughter Springsteen tour  (The mom was described as a superfan) and Bruce recognized them outside the venue (from other shows) and personally invited them in to watch soundcheck and let them stay and hang out. They are in Tulsa, I believe. The husband/father, who is not really into music, assured us they are not groupies.

Congrats Tony!  Great Shot!

Kind of was hoping this was a return of Nupsdog (Foolio) thread.

Neat staged photo.

awesome

thanks for sharing

Neat staged photo.

Kinda staged, but not in a traditional sense. If you see any performer a number of times, it is not unusual to know when they do certain things during certain songs. As a photographer I try to position myself to best capture those moments. The bassist for Anti-Flag is known for launching himself into the air frequently during a show. The jump that night was one that he does almost every performance during that song. While I knew approximately when he was going to jump, and where he was jumping from, I had no idea as to what direction he would jump until he launched himself. So, I still had to react to a few variables in order to get a good shot. His direction was basically to tell me where I might position myself to capture it. Not a specific spot but on a full-sized riser. Staged shots are a bit more controlled.

I'm glad so many of those posting like the photo.
