many of these "banned book" displays in libraries are based on internet memes that can be intentionally misleading or just outright not true. in general, some of the books listed/displayed are currently being challenged/banned, some books have been challenged/banned in the 50's - 90's but are not currently being challenged or banned, and some of the books simply have not had any significant challenges or bans whatsoever.
hop on pop is a good example here. in 2014, a toronto public library received a single complaint from an anonymous citizen demanding the book be taken off the shelf for "promoting violence against fathers".
there are no other modern cases of anyone wanting the book to be banned, the toronto public library quickly refused to ban it, and there is no evidence whatsoever that this request was serious and not just a silly troll.
although many of these books have faced challenges or bans, books like hop on pop are often dishonestly included in these lists/memes/displays to provoke emotional responses, drive clicks/engagement, and paint the political opposition as making much more absurd requests than are actually being made. this is used by both conservatives and liberals in the US - "look at those crazy republicans banning captain underpants" and "look at these woke libs banning dr suess" is absurd culture war bullshit that detracts from very real, very significant issues like stifling sex education in schools or removing classic, historically momentous pieces of literature for perceived racial stereotypes/language.
Libs didn't ban Dr Seuss. Companies, entertainers, and sports teams don't use pro-LGBT, pro-BLM imagery because they are woke or give a fuck about any of it. The only reason they do any of it is because it is good for business. Disney would gladly host Nazi day with a free Hitler mustache to the first 1,000 entrants if it was good for business. In the 2022 Senate the 50 Dem Senators represented 50 million more people than the 50 Republican Senators. The culture wars are over and have been decided for 20 years now. Only in politics - because we give Wyoming as much representation as California is this even a question. In every other arena these issues have all been decided.
That is why the Republicans are so desperate, because deep down they know they have lost. I mean Tucker Carlson's Producer called the Fox viewers cousin fucking terrorists, and that is what they will resort to more and more as the old Republicans continue to die off day after day and they lose the only power they have left in this society.
and being able to actually see all the titles on this display makes it even more obviously dishonest - a wrinkle in time, the lion the witch and the wardrobe, the wizard of oz, where the sidewalk ends, the lorax, hop on pop, and winne the pooh are NOT undergoing current challenges or bans in schools or libraries, and some of them, like hop on pop, have never actually been banned or seriously challenged, ever.
captian underpants has always been controversial among puritanical parents for "potty humor" - nothing new or surprising here.
roll of thunder hear my cry(pictured), along with of mice and men, huck finn and to kill a mockingbird(not pictured), were banned in schools in burbank CA in 2021 over concerns that they contained offensive, racist language that would be harmful to students of color - aka not banned by the conservative christian thought police, but rather banned by liberals acting in the name of anti-racism.
the books in this photo that have actually been recently challenged by conservatives all center around controversial social issues and make up a minority of the books here - i am jazz, woke, something happened in our town, melissa, and tango makes three.
yet this photo is often shared and discussed with the implication that *all* of these books are currently being challenged by conservatives, especially on twitter, where every thread discussing this photo is filled with shocked people making comments about how they cannot believe this is happening in their country, how could conservatives want to ban XYZ classic book, etc etc etc, when really, most of the books on this display are perfectly acceptable in all schools all over the country and have not had serious challenges made against them for decades at least, and nobody regardless of political affiliation is attempting to ban them.
IMO the most obviously dishonest inclusion here is roll of thunder hear my cry - this display is obviously set up to imply these "book bannings" are due to conservative christian thought by including a small handful of books that conservatives are actually, currently making challenges to in libraries and schools, when in reality that book was banned in one of the most liberal states in the country for reasons that most conservatives would decry as "woke".
while daylight makes good points, a cursorily review of the lists, you can see that clearly the american taliban faction is more behind this type of thought control more so than any woke mob...
then you have THESE people contesting books in schools in Florida ( Credit John Oliver ' Last week Tonight from 3/12 )
Reporters tracked down one woman who submitted 21 book challenges in one county, only to find that she’s a retiree with no children, who fully admits that she hasn’t read all of them, but “I’ve read them in partial.”
Utah Parent asked for the Bible to be removed from schools because under the new law “ Utah Code Ann. § 76-10-1227, it has ‘no serious values for minors’ because it’s pornographic by our new definition.”
The Bible absolutely contains all of this and more. Samson’s downfall is a femdom named Delilah. Lot’s daughters get him drunk and rape him repeatedly while he’s blacked out. There are more references to, and encouragement of, killing babies in violent ways than I care to name but feel free to search that up. God gets really pissed at the citizens of Judah for smelting all the jewelry he gave them down into fucktoys.
I'm not for banning or burning books at all, but now that we have an internet, the issue of banned books doesn't seem to burn so bright for me as it once did.
You may be familiar with Gender Queer: A Memoir as it was front-and-center of the culture war debate around book banning in grade school. I bought the book so I could see for myself what the commotion was about. Below are some images.
If you are arguing whether that may be inappropriate for younger kids you likely have some support.
I taught "family life" to upper elementary kids and there were limits. Guess what? There was a cartoon penis in a cartoon vagina and a cartoon ejaculation. In VA.
That is not what the xtian fundies are doing. Their Supreme Court is just getting warmed up unless we crush it.
Just for kicks is there any age group you think that is appropriate for?
Every authoritarian movement always has a touch of reasonableness. Should first graders be reading that book no, but as far as I can tell that book was only in middle school libraries. But don't believe for a second it is about that book.
A elementary school in Florida has banned a 1998Disneyfilmabout civil rights hero Ruby Bridges, pending a "review." At just six years old, Ruby Bridges was the first Black child to desegregate an all-white elementary school in New Orleans.
For years, schools in Pinellas County, Florida, have shown the film about Bridges as part of their Black History Month curriculum. Two weeks before the film was shown, parents were sent a trailer of the movie and asked to sign a permission slip. Two families opted to not have their student participate in viewing the movie.
One of the parents who opted her child out of the movie was Emily Conklin.
But for Conklin, this wasn't enough.
On March 6, Conklin filed an official objection seeking to ban the Ruby Bridges film for all second graders — and even much older students. Conklin claims the result of a child watching the film would be to "teach them racial slur [sic]" and that "white people hate black people."
According to school district policy, after a parent fills out a form like this, a "School-Based Instructional Materials Review Committee" reviews the challenge and decides whether or not whether the material will remain available. Material in question will remain in use until the School-Based Instructional Materials Review Committee recommends a final decision.
Nevertheless, in response to Conklin's objection, North Shore Elementary banned the film from its school pending a review, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
> as far as I can tell that book was only in middle school libraries
That's surprising to me. And, in fact, I'd be surprised if Gender Queer was allowed in public high school libraries, although not because of its depictions of non-binary/hetero sexuality, but rather for its explicit depictions of sexuality at all. Is there a comparable binary/hetero text that's allowed, or disallowed, from K-12 public school libraries?
It is in some middle schools and you probably don't have hetero books exploring the same subject because there aren't a lot of kids contemplating suicide because they are struggling with their hetero/binary sexuality.
In 2020, it won an Alex Award, a prize given by the American Library Association to books written for adults that hold “special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18.”
The award brought “Gender Queer” to the attention of librarians across the country, who often look to such prizes when deciding what books to order. High schools and some middle school libraries around the country began stocking it. Currently, on Amazon, it’s listed as appropriate for ages 18 and up; on Barnes & Noble’s website, it’s recommended for readers 15 and older.
> kids contemplating suicide because they are struggling with their hetero/binary sexuality.
What I'm reading is that LGBTQ adolescent suicide attempts are correlated more to social mistreatment and stigmatization than to sexual orientation or gender identity itself.
If anything, it seems that placing a book like Gender Queer in public school libraries is inflaming anti-LGBTQ passions and leading to greater mistreatment and stigmatization of LGBTQ youth. Because of this, placing a book like Gender Queer in public school libraries might have the opposite effect on the number of young people contemplating suicide than what's intended.
This just seems really ill-conceived activism to me.
Just to be clear I'm not advocating for this book to be put in libraries. I would leave that up to the educators who have spent their lives thinking about this stuff just like I would leave medical decisions up to to doctors.
Mostly I think it is hilarious that anyone thinks that kids learn or are influenced in any way by what is or isn't in a school library. It is 2023 and they all carry around a device that gives them access to anything they want. This is all performative bullshit that will have zero impact one way or the other on anything that really matters. Ban all the books or don't it makes no difference.
>Ban all the books or don't it makes no difference.
while I get that sentiment and the fact that kids on on the internets and have watched actual porn, teachers can have a very positive impact introducing art and literature to kids and discussing the ideas in a classroom setting. when the educators are being fired for actually educating kids, it absolutely makes a difference.
> Just to be clear I'm not advocating for this book to be put in libraries.
Yeah, I get that. I don't have a dog in this fight either; my posts were more of an academic exercise.
And you're completely right about public school library use in 2023, which for me underscores that placing a book like Gender Queer in a public school library is about activism, or performative bullshitas you called it, more than saving lives.
the recreation of depictions of pedastry in ancient greece in the last photo from gender queer that siobud shared is certainly way overboard. i generally disagree with the discussions around lbgt people being "groomers" of children, but come on. its like this book was written by a right winger trying to stir the pot.
its literally a drawing that is imitating classic greek art depicting pedastry - sexual relationships between grown men and young teen boys.
fucking gross dude. i think the line for LGBT acceptance ends at "hey wasnt pedastry in ancient greece so cool?"
Missouri lawmakers late Thursday evening moved to strip state funding from public libraries in retaliation for a lawsuit challenging a new state law that bans certain materials in school libraries.
Spineless fuckers afraid of ideas trying to control what others think. What the fuck are they afraid of? (And when the fuck did the black screen start inserting a blue underline under profanity?)
A year or two ago, I was doing some writing for a publisher who supplies schools with reading materials for young students who are developmentally disabled. It seemed like a pretty good gig until I was asked to write a biography about Neil deGrasse Tyson, but I was instructed not to mention race in any way, shape, or form. I was told that this was because the publisher wanted to be able to sell in places like Texas, and they were concerned their products wouldn't sell if they addressed topics like race. Call it CRT fear.
That was the last project I worked on for that company because I came to see them as part of the problem. The publisher isn't a racist, but his business practices enable those who are racist, and I didn't want any part of the whitewashing, even though it meant that I had to take a hard pass on a fairly lucrative gig.
I saw the blue underline a couple of days ago, wondered what the fuck, and didn't follow up on it. I'll get in touch with lava today and see if he knows what's going on. I saw it under another word (that I can't remember), too, and thought maybe it was a subtle way of showing a spelling error. There's no error in FUCK. I will look the fuck into it.
At least I like the color of the blue.
I'm guessing the underlying platform Viva is built on added a profanity feature. Let's subject it to the Carlin Test: Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits.
Some nice synchronicity with this getting noticed and discussed in a censorship thread.
To "work blue" means to use vulgar language or to touch on topics considered by some to be "dirty" or "taboo" in your act as a comedian. Outside of the comedy clubs, most blue humor can only be heard on cable TV or satellite radio as comics rarely "work blue" on network talk shows like "The Tonight Show, " mostly because of network standards.
in the meantime, if anyone wants to type a single swear word without the blue line, you can do so by going back to the swear word, deleting it, and then retype it, and leave the cursor exactly where it is after you type the last letter - no spaces, no punctuation, no going back to other parts of the comment - just type the last letter of the swear word and press "preview" as fast as you can. if the cursor stays at the very end of the swear word you just typed, and you press "preview" within 1-2 seconds, before the blue line appears, it will not show up in your finished post.

Texas could just follow the Missouri model.
Missouri lawmakers late Thursday evening moved to strip state funding from public libraries in retaliation for a lawsuit challenging a new state law that bans certain materials in school libraries.

Spineless fuckers afraid of
Spineless fuckers afraid of ideas trying to control what others think.

To "work blue" means to use
To "work blue" means to use vulgar language or to touch on topics considered by some to be "dirty" or "taboo" in your act as a comedian. Outside of the comedy clubs, most blue humor can only be heard on cable TV or satellite radio as comics rarely "work blue" on network talk shows like "The Tonight Show, " mostly because of network standards.
So on-the-nose

in the meantime, if anyone
in the meantime, if anyone wants to type a single swear word without the blue line, you can do so by going back to the swear word, deleting it, and then retype it, and leave the cursor exactly where it is after you type the last letter - no spaces, no punctuation, no going back to other parts of the comment - just type the last letter of the swear word and press "preview" as fast as you can. if the cursor stays at the very end of the swear word you just typed, and you press "preview" within 1-2 seconds, before the blue line appears, it will not show up in your finished post.
