OMG for real! I really regret never having seen a Prince concert.
This video is a gem, thanks for posting.
I don't remember him coming to the NW much if at all... or maybe it was during the years I wasn't living in NW.
I did have a cool unexpected encounter in Vegas once...when I was in audience at a Maceo show and his bodyguard cleared a path through the crowd, and I was on edge of path -- Prince said hi as he passed by on way to stage but he seemed very shy, show was super crowded.
He is also one of my regrets. One of the things that kept me away was you never knew what you were going to get when you went to see him. A sold out arena show where he would only play his very obscure self released tracks and then he would put on a killer show later that night at some club.
He did have the music director at the radio station I worked at kicked out of the backstage VIP area for staring at him which was pretty funny and overall a good thing.
He was the greatest..
I had a brief encounter with him on the afternoon of February 15, 2004 at the Fillmore in San Francisco. I was working there at the time and in the hallway when he came in for soundcheck. If you've been in the Fillmore then you know where the apple barrel is at the top of the stairs. Myself and another were filling the barrel pre show as we often did and breaking down the boxes. Suddenly the side doors leading to the metal stairs outside opened up and there he was. Escorted up the back stairs by his body guard. He paused for a moment before entering the hall and said "gentlemen" as he saluted us walking in to the room. Still holding apple boxes in my hands I was stunned. Prince saw me just doing my job and acknowledged me. How cool was that?? I was fortunate to see him several times between 1985-2014. Watching him perform was always an experience but catching his eye at the Fillmore is something I'll never forget.
Yeah my friend who you probably know got called back stage at the Fillmore because they needed someone with a sewing machine right away because Prince ripped his pants. I don't think she was ever so happy to be a seamstress. Said he was a very nice guy and very thankful for her sewing machine.
The above footage was from a live simulcast on TV. I have a DVD of the whole show somewhere. I just poked around YouTube and found a few more songs from that evening.
