Here's the entry for "Truckin'" from Dylan's The Philosophy of Modern Song:
The Grateful Dead are not your usual rock and roll band. They’re essentially a dance band. They have more in common with Artie Shaw and bebop than they do with the Byrds or the Stones. Whirling dervish dancers are as much a part of their music as anything else. There is a big difference in the types of women that you see from the stage when you are with the Stones compared to the Dead. With the Stones it’s like being at a porno convention. With the Dead, it’s more like the women you see by the river in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? Free floating, snaky and slithering like in a typical daydream. Thousands of them. With most bands the audience participates like in a spectator sport. They just stand there and watch. They keep a distance. With the Dead, the audience is part of the band—they might as well be on the stage.
The Dead are from a different world than their contemporaries. Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother, all of them together wouldn’t even make a part of the Dead. What makes them essentially a dance band probably begins with the jazz classical bassist, Phil Lesh, and the Elvin Jones–influenced Bill Kreutzmann. Lesh is one of the most skilled bassists you’ll ever hear in subtlety and invention. And combined with Kreutzmann, this rhythm section is hard to beat. That rhythm section along with elements of traditional rock and roll and American folk music is what makes the Dead unsurpassable. Combined with their audience, it’s like one big free-floating ballet. Three main singers, two drummers and triple harmonies make this band difficult to compete with. A postmodern jazz musical rock and roll dynamo.
Then there’s Bob Weir. A very unorthodox rhythm player. Has his own style, not unlike Joni Mitchell but from a different place. Plays strange, augmented chords and half chords at unpredictable intervals that somehow match up with Jerry Garcia—who plays like Charlie Christian and Doc Watson at the same time. All that and an in-house writer-poet, Robert Hunter, with a wide range of influences—everyone from Kerouac to Rilke—and steeped in the songs of Stephen Foster. This creates a wide range of opportunities for the Dead to play almost any kind of music and make it their own.
“Truckin'” is one of their signature songs and lyrically it combines the goings-on of a wild and wide world. The Doo Dah man even appears in this song. 'I came down south with my hat caved in.' This could easily be a Dead song from one hundred years earlier.
When you go to a Dead concert you are right there in Pirate Alley on the Barbary Coast, right there by the San Francisco Bay. At any time you could drop through a trapdoor into a rowboat and be shanghaied to China and not even know it. This song, even though it lists some cities, has very little to do with Chuck Berry’s “Promised Land,” Martha and the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street,” or even Hank Snow’s “I’ve Been Everywhere.” This song is all on the same street. Chicago, New York, Detroit, New Orleans, Houston, Buffalo. It’s all the same main street. Long before America had actually transformed itself into the same sprawling mall.
This song is medium tempo, but it seems to just keep picking up speed. It’s got a fantastic first verse, which doesn’t let up or fizzle out, and every verse that follows could actually be a first verse. Arrows of neon, flashing marquees, Dallas and a soft machine, Sweet Jane, vitamin C, Bourbon Street, bowling pins, hotel windows, and the classic line, “What a long strange trip it’s been.” A thought that anybody can relate to. Cards that ain’t worth a dime. All in the same town. But you’re moving anyway. The lyrics just pile up on top of each other. But the meaning is understandable and clear. The song also changes pace and changes back and the chorus has got that triple harmony again. 'Truckin’'—it conjures up something different from traveling. It’s arduous. But the Dead are a swinging dance band so it doesn’t seem like hard work to go with them.
The guy singing the song acts and talks like who he is, and not the way others would want him to talk and act.
At the show I saw last spring, Dylan played the same list he's been playing for some time now, but it felt fresh and vital all the same.
It's also interesting to note, as the jambase article does, that the couple of times Dylan has mixed things up recently he's added GD songs to the setlist. That's a rock solid testimony to this thing of ours, I'd say.
Only a fool would second guess Dylan's decision making process. The man is a genius as an artist, cultural and literary icon, and making money in the music entertainment business.
No question Dylan's singing is an acquired taste. It took me years and many shows (that I didn't pay for) to figure out his "unique" sound & style, but figure it out I did, and the show I saw last summer was excellent, so this sounds pretty good to me.
As always, his band is tight as a button here, and it's pretty upbeat & rockin' for recent Dylan.
And maybe most importantly, whatever one may think of it, one thing no one can complain about is the hallowed tempo.
Agreed, but his voice does take some getting used to, and I can understand that some folks don't want to spend their time that way, while others spend theirs crafting artful descriptions of it.
A brief selection of adjectives that writers have used to describe Dylan’s singing voice:
croaky, harsh, nasal, flaying, acrid, and grating.
A selection of similes and metaphors:
“[His voice] made him sound like a man from a chain gang whose nose had been broken by a guard’s rifle butt.” Anthony Scaduto.
“He is consciously trying to recapture the rude beauty of a Southern field hand musing in melody on his front porch.” Robert Shelton.
“[He sounds] very much like a dog with his leg caught in barbed wire.” Mitch Jayne, of the folk group The Dillards.
Truckin cover? Very cool. But more than that, try touring the entire world at age 81 where almost ALL of your setlist is from your own latest album (which made #1 on the album charts), and not your old hits.
Can’t say this enough. Bob is currently touring in Japan. He’ll be 82 next month. His latest album came out in 2020, and topped the charts. His setlist every night is mostly comprised of every song from that latest album, except the very long closing track Murder Most Foul. THAT song, 17 minutes long, made number one by itself. He’s not doing a nostalgia show like McCartney or the Stones... or... DeadCo. He’s mostly doing new songs, and by now the audiences all know it because it’s the same show every night, and the shows are selling well if not selling out, internationally.
Bob never cared anyway. When he made those three gospel albums, he basically played only the gospel tunes every night, and if people didn’t like it, there was the door. And he’s still going.
That’s badass. It’s cool that he pulled out Truckin, and it sounds like he had fun doing it. But Weir and Lesh are not touring Japan or Europe playing almost an entire show of new songs.
been seeing Bob for 40+ years -- 2019 Frost show (mentioned above? )was last time and twas next level fun. Love his occasional covers. Anyone catch Mutineer (Zevon) at the Greek years back?...soulful . Band is always tight. And thanks for the song write up on "philosophy" posted above...his writing is a hoot to read. He seems to be living his best life, traveling the world, working at what he seems to love doing. Same song list..well it's a show he takes on the road and it's a lot of "new" material. He has enough fans to not worry about needing same audience following him around on tour I suppose. Hope to catch him in Porto in June were coincidentally we both seem to be in your typical city involved in a typical daydream...gonna hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.

> He would never grow into his shoes and tell them where to go.
Lance, I'll grant that that's probably the weakest line of Days Between, but it's also a real aberration in what is otherwise one of Hunter's strongest lyrics. Also, growing into our shoes and telling them where to go somehow managed to get past Garcia's bullshit detector, so I'm thinking it could wiggle past Dylan's too.
>>then later in the song he walks barefoot through the snow
where'd his shoes go?<<
He doesn't walk barefoot in the snow, later in the song. He laments having previously walked barefoot in the snow.
Everything is the song is previous, and not necessarily sequential. And there were obv days between having shoes & not having shoes.
By definition, nothing in the song is a same-day event, lol.
I remember being SHOCKED seeing Dylan in Seattle on 10/4/2002, when out of left field Bob breaks out a full band version of Brown Sugar by the Stones. I remember hearing Larry Campbell playing the rhythm guitar intro and then the band kicks in, and I was like, “They’re not really going to do the song, are they?” But sure enough, Bob starts singing “Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields.” We were like, “What?!” And it was unexpectedly brilliant. Dylan put the perfect slant on it.
He’s Bob, he’s got the ultimate catalog of his own songs, but he does pick some pretty surprising and interesting covers.

>>then later in the song he walks barefoot through the snow
where'd his shoes go?<<
He doesn't walk barefoot in the snow, later in the song. He laments having previously walked barefoot in the snow.
Everything is the song is previous, and not necessarily sequential. And there were obv days between having shoes & not having shoes.
By definition, nothing in the song is a same-day event, lol.

I remember being SHOCKED

Brokedown definitely needs some work. Dylan seemed to be trying to find his way into the song at times, and then at other times he nailed it.

Dylan has more than enough
Dylan has more than enough neglected nuggets in his own catalog that he needs to be fiddling around with the Hunter/Garcia playbook.

He played it again tonight. Said to be "complete and very good."
Terrapin, I was also at that SDSU show. Saw 7 shows on that tour, all were fantastic but I think the Vegas show took the cake.
