Happy Walpurgis!

Forums:

This evening marks Walpurga's Eve, a centuries old rite mainly celebrated in Europe to celebrate St. Walpurga's efforts to ward off evil spirits and witchcraft.  Bonfires are commonly lit as part of the festivities.  Didn't know about this ritual as it has never gotten much attention here in the U.S.

Sounds like a patriarchy thing. I guess I'll have to find something else to celebrate today.

Well, if you read the Wikipedia link, it seems to be tied to pagan celebrations of the coming of Spring.  As St.. Walpurga was a woman, your patriarchy remark rings hallow.

Walpurga might have been a woman, but ridding a place of witchcraft was typically a way of keeping women in line and away from the centers of power.

And I think you meant hollow.

I see it as more a good vs. evil thing, and obviously a celebration of light over darkness as Springtime supercedes Winter.  All good things.

You're right that I meant hollow.  Thanks for catching that!

Voted most entertaining post-puff read of the morning!

So do we get a cream puff award for that?

^^^ have fun!

my old neighbors founded that fest and I attended the early ones when they were at a location on the gorge.

Portraying the Horned God character with the Triple Moon Goddess sounds like fun times for role players!

skip the party

burn the patriarchy

Senor y Senora Buzzkill es Senor y Senora Buzzkill.

Might as well join the Jehovah's Witnesses if you want to cancel Celebration Days.

The bonfire is stronger than the weak sauce virtue signal.

What kind of virtue signaling sauce is promoting a Christian feast day?

Seems like Dave had a big bowl of Feisty O's for breakfast this morning.

imagine discussing obscure historical factoids without trying to tie the discussion to modern day american culture war issues

Christians are always appropriating the old school holidays.
