RIP Jim Brown

Forums:

A true one of a kind if there ever was one.  Happy Trails...........

Word around Syracuse was always that Jim Brown was an even better lacrosse player than football. And I guess he refocused his effort toward the NFL because lacrosse was a very local sport and higher leagues did not exist yet in those days.

A great American he was.

^^^
It's not word. It's fact.  In the Hall of fame for that sport too. Widely considered the greatest Lacrosse player of all time.

He's a true legend. He was a great & important player in the civil rights movement and over the years he helped a lot of people, and he was possibly the greatest football player of all time, a man among boys on the football field.

Unfortunately, he wasn't a man among women, with a long and admitted history of abuse.

Because of that I can't say I was ever a fan.

He was good in the Dirty Dozen though.

2nd best Browns RB, watch the tape of Marion Motley

civil rights leader, wife beater and bad actor, maybe the browns curse is over, go browns!

rip, Jim

Sorry, you're delusional. There are at least 20 running backs who were better. I personally think Jim Kelly was better than Motley, though they are both ranked tied for 21st all time. #1 Jim Brown. Still holds NFL records. And he retired at the peak/prime of his career. C'mon dude Emmett Smith, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson, Eric Dickerson, Gale Sayers and a slew more I can name if you like, all better than Motley. But I'll take some of that Kool Aid if you're sharing.

75th anniversary all nfl team FBs

y p carry Marion motley 5.7

y p catch Jim Brown  9.5

y p catch Marion Motley 13

Motley was a 26 year old rookie because of missed time serving in WWII

Give him the 4 years in football when he was 22-26 and it would not even be close, was also best linebacker on the team

The 5.7 yards per carry is still the best by a RB in NFL history

By the way it was Leroy Kelly, and no he was not near the force that Motley was

In the video link above Mike Browns states that his father, Paul Brown, one of the greatest coaches of all time, who coached both players, said Motley was the greatest player he ever coached. Jim Brown was a great Fullback that could not,  or did not want to block. A full back that does not block is not a complete player. Delusional, me and Paul Brown, I will take it as a complement.

And now most importantly

Championships

League championships (8)

AAFC championships (4)
1946, 1947, 1948, 1949

NFL championships (pre-1970 AFL–NFL merger) (4)
1950, 1954, 1955, 1964

Conference championships (11)

NFL American: 1950, 1951, 1952

NFL Eastern: 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1969

Division championships (12)

AAFC Western: 1946, 1947, 1948

NFL Century: 1967, 1968, 1969

AFC Central: 1971, 1980, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989

same argument as Wilt Chamberlain  vs. Bill Russell - for me it is Russell because of the championships, same here with Motley

Championships aren't individual achievements, regardless of individual greatness or era played. This is literally the least important individual statistic.

Running back excellence isn't really defined by blocks, or yards per carry. Good rb's all average around the same - 4 yards (or more) or so. It's a great measurement regarding predictability and efficiency, but is just one statistic of many that matter.

The meat and potatoes stats for a running back are Rushing yards (Brown 13,312 career yards vs motley at 828), receptions (Brown 262 vs motley at 85), receiving yards (Brown - 2499 vs motley with 1107), touchdowns, (brown 126, motley 38), yards per game (104 vs 45,) etc and then divide these by the total number of seasons/games played. Both having played nine seasons in the NFL (brown 118 games, motley 105); this is where you can really see how lopsided a comparison (there really isn't one) it is. Not to mention there were also fewer teams (less competition) when motley played.

There may be a sentimental comparison to be made here but there is not a mathematical one.

But even by your own video criteria; motley is the 74th all time NFL player /100.

Brown is 2nd

No disrespect, but I will go with Paul Brown's opinion of the two

None taken

Paul brown was a great coach and all around very sentimental guy

maybe start a Marion motley thread

RIP Jim Brown

Thanks Mice. Well stated. I didn't have the time or inclination to argue with him. He can believe what he wants.

Ok I will leave and you can get back to celebrating the life of a women beating rapist

I'll bet you're a fucking blast at parties.

Skyjunk. Unfortunately that had nothing to do with his ability as a football player. Poor argument. Especially when he acknowledged his shortcomings. I suppose his acting career and all his charity and civil rights activism means nothing. And I don't see who's actually celebrating him here. Just comparing his athletic abilities and  football career. But if it offends you so much, I'm sure you can find a Marion Motley jock strap to worship

Bob, this is a life thread, and it is you that is separating his football over his life accomplishment. Saying he Acknowledged his short comings but still he continued to beat women and others in life really is an empty vessel of an argument. Civil Rights leader, did you see pictures of how he pulverized these women? Last check women are entitled to civil rights too, but I'm the one labeled as a jock sniffer.

Mice, you are correct I'm not good at parties
