why are there low quality psychedelic visuals during the best parts of the jams in almost every single pro shot GD video? thats when i want to see close ups of the instruments, and good whole band shots of them all locked in together, going down the road. WTF?

I have the opposite problem
I have the opposite problem with Phish simulcasts. That band has a killer light show, but 80% of the video stream is closeup shots of the band. It's cool to see Mike's new duds and all, but I know what those dudes look like and they aren't getting prettier with age.

what gets me is when Jerry's just about to tear into a solo, the camera switches to a drummer banging on something.
you'd think they'd have a camera director who had a clue as to what was going on.

the ' pro shot ' videos were recorded from the program feed to the stadium screens and that is where those effects were intended to be seen accompanying the light show and the band on stage, unfortunately, they didn't record or did and just didnt care to drop in other camera feeds that would have been recorded isolated before they got to the switcher that cut those screen feeds...in other words, edited/cut live to tape, warts and all.

It was also during a time of burgeoning motion graphics. Nowadays any 4 year old can make interesting graphics on their iPad but in the 80's, even crappy graphics required a fair amount of processing power and expertise. Looking back at them now, they look dumb but at the time were considered more novel.
As far as current webcasts, the style of the filming turns me off from most. When there are wide shots of the stage/band, you can get a nice feeling and perspective of the concert. But ultimately they just keep quickly bouncing from shot to shot to shot, along with unnecessary closeups. It's far too kinetic to be enjoyable.

I would rather see the show
I would rather see the show from different audience perspectives. I don't need any close ups. I want it to feel like I'm at the show without the people talking and spilling beer on me. But good explanation about the pro shot. Video feeds that play during the show are going to be close ups that makes sense.

We just saw our friends' band at a weird bar in Hillsboro and the house screens and visuals were freeking amazing.

Was listening to the first Phil & Friends show from 9/24/94. That was Phil, Bob, and Jerry acoustic with Vince on grand piano. Vince sounded amazing on both vocals and piano. Makes you wonder how good he could have been if they didn't program that cheesy Casio sound for him.

i have had several experiences of hanging out with friends, someone else is dj'ing random GD music, and i hear an obvious late 80s - early 90s sound come thru, everything seems normal, then that crazy casio noise kicks in, way louder than all the other instruments, and its extremely jarring and i get super confused for a few seconds, before realizing they put on a post-brent track, which TBH has never really been in my rotation at all, even lagging behind modern cover band material. kinda like im just listening to normal GD music, then all of a sudden - "what the fuck was that????"
"oh yeah. vince."

its really unfortunate that
its really unfortunate that the final years turned out the way they did when you look at the way that many modern, post jerry configurations have changed aspects of the gd concert format, bringing back lots of deep cuts and beloved songs that were no longer played, more "big jam" songs in each show, more second set big jam songs making first set appearances, and in alot of cases much more focus on psychedelic improv. crazy to think about what could have been if the band took that direction back in 91, or better yet, took a break and picked it back up some years down the road.
