Check out these big leaf maple burls in a friend's yard...the tree is rotting, they are thinking of placing an ad that says "remove the tree, keep the burls."
Anyone know what they're worth? Should they work a deal w/ a woodworking supply store?
Burls are worth way more than the cost of the tree removal. Getting a large hardwood tree removed costs around $1500 (ymmv)
I'm pretty sure burls with bark all around them like that are more rare still. Luthiers and furniture makers go apeshit for this stuff. That is a LOT of burl in those pics.
if those trees were on my property, I'd cut one or two open to show off, then find someone to buy and harvest the burls, then deal with what's left of the trees with the profit.
he 100% needs to look into the actual value before giving away. i dont know the size or metrics by which burls are priced, but like bss said, these can go for a ton of money. this is potentially extremely valuable. letting someone take this for the cost of tree removal could mean giving away thousands of dollars.
In addition to the value of the burls, they need people who know how to fall trees safely without damaging other trees/plants around them. Good thing you came to Viva to ask the experts!
The Burls are Not Rotten even if the center of the tree is If Not Rotten Slabs can be Made too,Burls are hit and miss to how they will hold up being turned., But sometimes, have great out comes. My Best friend turns bowls and Vase's, all Burls are different. Its a Dangerous art, When one comes loose of the lathe...Look Out... Good Luck With the burls, There is a certain way to cut the log and also the burl off. I have some of Neil's work but I cant post pics anymore
A dear SF friend named Burl who I met at String Summit... and who a few Zoners may know.... left this world about 2 years ago now... used to send him images of burls...
