I enjoyed listening to the complete show last night, streamed from archive.org. Occasional issues, volume fading in and out, with the sound on Eric's guitar, or else it was the taper. There is no doubt that this group of musicians can deliver a beautifully beguiling, somewhat subtle, electric experience. The jam in West LA Fadeaway made my ears tingle. The singing and horns of JH and Casey bring a wonderful and exotic element to these tunes.
I don't know. I think Phil has too much of a rotation in his musicians. The bands don't have the time together to gel and there are plenty of miscues. Execution.
Erik is great; but he noodles quite a bit and occasionally rips a great lead. Graham's singing and rhythm playing were very nice. James Casey is singing out of tune quite often. And his howling and screeching seemed out of place. Jennifer Had some great vocals but a couple of songs her leads in the jams didn't keep up with the rest of the band.
The key board player sounded really nice. Even Molo seemed to be playing at half of his potential.
Unfortunately; Phil sounds weak. Thank goodness his muscle memory carries over; but his creativity and punch really left something to be desired. Even the set list was typical. After listening to two shows, I don't have any interest in listening to the third.
I know you guys are diehard Phil Phans; but the two shows I listened to were lackluster. Just my opinion.
To me the shows put on by Dead & Company were much more entertaining. The band is well practiced up; strong right out of the gate and much more interesting. Also, just my opinion.
"I think Phil has too much of a rotation in his musicians. The bands don't have the time together"
The core players in Phil's bands the last couple of years have mainly been TXR regulars. Most of them have at least 10 good solid years playing Grateful Dead music, often with Phil. They seem to me a lot more rehearsed and in sync than some of the one off line ups of "name" musicians.
There's a static, one-cam video with pretty good audio on da yootoobses. Poke around. I watched a set+ way late last night.
They play Ramble on Rose in Bb. It threw me for a bit. I had started playing along with FOTD. I didn't quite figure it out until the end of the first bridge (the Bb was easy; the guitar math not so much).
I play it in C (vs. original D) and the original chords are always tugging at my brain when I do. There was a bit of "Fuck...oh, right. Duh." in real time. Especially on the bridge.
I'll save set two for an appropriate cranked-speakers hour.
BTW, was Natalie not in the lineup for any of these shows?
Also...am I the only one who thinks Kras' singing voice is a tad Mayer-ish? First noticed it in one of those Relix studio vids.
Can't be done. The "that guitar sounds like shit" and "WTF is he even trying to do?" factors (see China Cat intro) can't be overcome. And Bob singing Garcia tunes remains a ticket to Cringe City.
