i chatted with Vorty on Monday at a private show with barraco, JP, Nate, Zach Nugent on a wolf and sunshine becker and dino english
barraco sang two souls in communion ( the stranger) - i have been dying to hear = I WAS BLISSED he said he saw pig at his first show in NY , and they played an 11 minute version - and it floored him - he sang from memory. we also got a standing on the moon - the grateful guitars benefits at the GAMH the night before was epic - so much music -- three shows or more a week at my age is taxing - but i can't let the rail down
vorty had to spep away from the vitriol that was spewing at him many years ago................

I agree, Dino and Rob are very sweet people. I've gotten together with them, or more often Dino, when DSO comes to Eugene. I like them as people, and also as musicians.
Right on, Tony.
doolittle, a couple of things. When you live in a place like Eugene where there are lots of people who know each other and know the music, getting together to hear DSO is a good social gathering as well as the chance to hear good live music. For me it's not that they're covering GD music, it's that a bunch of people can have a good time as a group listening to live music.
On a side note, GD played covers, Rolling Stones play covers, lots of bands have played covers. To me, nothing wrong with playing covers.
I'm happy that you have good memories of the shows you went to.

Damn, you cover band fans can
Damn, you cover band fans can't get your show days straight!
And not caring for "cover bands" is a fair and valid attitude, but I will say this about bands that play Grateful Dead music; because GD music is inherently improvisational, so must the cover band be improvisational, and that makes every show a product of the individuals performing, and whether the musicians consciously try to sound like the original players or not (some do, many don't) since they're improvising in the moment the music is always coming from their ideas, their intuition, in that moment.
Some of the players & bands are very good at sounding like the Grateful Dead, but they're not good at individual and group improvisation so the music goes nowhere and is quickly boring (or worse) while others may or not sound like the originals but are excellent improvisers, and the music goes to interesting places that are unique to those players.
So while the songs and structure might be "covered" and the technical style of the original players might be closely emulated by the new players, the improvised music being played is by definition always original.

He really doesn't.
He really doesn't.
And in this ultimately foolish conversation about what constitutes a cover band, a case can easily be made that all Phil & Friends groups have been cover bands because while it's true that Phil was in the Grateful Dead he wrote virtually none of the music, so everything his own bands have played except the two or three songs that Phil wrote are all Jerry, Bob or other people's songs. Thus, a cover band.
Anyway, for people who really just care about the actual music being played it doesn't really matter who's playing it but only how good it is, and the people who get all wrapped up in the pros & cons of cover bands have an agenda that has nothing to do with the music being played, and this thread was originally about music that was actually played and enjoyed.
What a concept.

Not quite. After Greg died I couldn't go to live music; it opened me up, went straight to my heart, was too much. It took a couple of years before I could just feel it (and tap my toes). I was listening to albums, tapes and CDs at home, dancing through the time, but live music did something different.
I'm back to some live music, but almost never big shows with crowds. Not fun for me.
I do encourage you to see whatever the music of your choice is, no matter what it is. Foot moving, toe tapping, get it where you can. And spend time with sweet musician friends when you can. Live life!
