I'll be there in 3D....

Good fun in your future, Don.

I'll be there, dazzling the floor crowd with my understated yet innovative dances, once again.

Barr Brothers are great. I've been a fan going back to their days as the Slip (which they recently resurrected). Their lineup with harp and keys was a phenomenal band.

Hope this sounds better for folks in the room, but what I've heard so far is kind of a mess.

From Reddit: Not sure if Nugs showed this, but right as FOTM was ending Billy called Tom over and made a signal that appeared to be cutting the set short. He rushed off the stage immediately after - hope Billy’s doing alright.

If this was anything like the last two shows I webcast it's totally crigeworthy. Definitely NOT going to the local show on Halloween......

I didn't get to watch much of the show (just the beginning).  Anyone know why the 2nd set was cut short?

Here's the list;

The Cap was wall to wall last night. When it gets that crowded, particularly with a wide-eyed crowd, the floor becomes less than an ideal environment.

First set was pretty jangly. The guitarist from The Slip is talented but just seemed to add an angular element that was not all too pleasing.

2nd set better.

I'd imagine tonight will be pretty good, with a night under their belt.

> If this was anything like the last two shows I webcast it's totally crigeworthy. Definitely NOT going to the local show on Halloween......

I'd say that last night was more cringy, Woz. I pulled the plug a few songs into the first set, and put my Santa Barbara tickets up for resale.

Oy! That's bad. I at least made it through most of the first night of the last run.

Slow start I thought with the opener 'Join Together' nothing special.  Right int Help>Slip>Frank.  By Franklins they seems to gel somewhat. Good energy, great leads.  The Peggy-O was great IMO.  Mellow, but extremely soulful. The Brown-Eyed Women was ok, follow by Don't You Break My Heart.  Both enjoyable, but lacking in overall tightness I thought.  Into Sugaree now.  Be back later.

Sugaree ok, nothing mind melting.  Next up Hurts me Too. Guest guitarist really good once again on this.  He was the lead on Peggy-O also and great there also.  Into Last Time now.

Last Time was enjoyable, but no real meshing of the band imo. So not much full band psychedelic jamming going on with two, three, or four leads all happening from different players simultaneously. Some great individual playing; the keys and the lead guitarist are way talented and they shred for sure.  The guest guitarist I like alot. He led on Peggy and Hurts Me To and has the right voice for these soulful songs.  Every note counts with his leads. Both songs played slower and this can be really hard to pull off I feel, but this guy held my attention throughout. So overall good, but not great set.  Looking forward to second set. Bass player broke a string at the start of Hurts Me Too and played last too songs with a broken string.  Guess no bass tech on board. Never seen a bass player who strums so much.

Morning dew was great. Uncle Johns also excellent.  The wheel very good.

Crazy Fingers also great.  They are on a roll.  Into Cassidy now,

Cassidy soars, the roll continues. Love the One Your with certainly ok, but nothing special. Rider to close the second set is good, not great.

Encores: Brokedown Palace is very nice and Touch of Grey is very good.  All in all second set much better than first. Highlights for me were Peggy-O, Morning Dew, and Crazy Fingers. Quite a few others were extremely good also, but those three traveled to realms deep and refreshing!

Really enjoyed the guest guitarist Brad Barr.  I'd see him in a heartbeat.

Great time!!!!   Fun running into some old faces...  The Band was having a Great time..

The Kids Are Alright: Billy & the Kids Deliver Plethora of First-Time Covers in Port Chester

This past weekend, Billy & the Kids pulled into Port Chester, N.Y., for a double feature billed as Daze of the Dead and spread over two nights at The Capitol Theatre. The veteran backbeat, Bill Kreutzmann, brought in tow Tom Hamilton, Aron Magner, Reed Mathis, and special guests Brad and Andrew of The Bar Brothers, who collectively ran through a plethora of first-time covers, which pulled from The Who, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and other veteran rock ensembles.

Friday, Oct. 20, commenced with a fitting first-time song choice, a take on The Who’s 1965 anthem, “The Kids Are Alright,” representing a thoughtful pick with lyrically appropriate lines that seemingly referenced the project’s name. The group followed up with music from Kreutzmann’s Grateful Dead days with “St. Stephen.” The song served as another debut for this particular group of players, who continued with a drum-heavy display of “Eye’s on the World” prior to taking on Dylan’s “She Belongs With Me,” marking another debut.

The ensemble dipped into the signature twang of Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried,” adding in “Jack Straw” before a first-time take on “Row Jimmy,” a staple from the Dead’s Wake of the Flood record. To cap the first frame, the band landed on a first-time take on The Rolling Stone’s yearning classic, “Let’s Spend the Night Together.” Set two started off with a bang via the drummers and an instrumental wave of rhythmic splendor, which unfolded into “Scarlet Begonias” and a debut of “Friend of the Devil,” sans its typical sister tune, “China Cat Sunflower,” instead they added “Ramble on Rose.”

Continuing with the motif of first-time plays, they added another Dylan tune, “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” before closing out the second set with a roaring take on “Fire on the Mountain.” For the encore, the group debuted Eric Clapton’s original, “Lay Down Sally,” before closing the night on “Ripple.” With night one in the books, the group returned to the stage on Saturday, Oct. 21, ready to dip into additional first-time covers. Not unlike night one, the band cut into a cover from The Who, only this time, they went with “Join Together.”

Night two continued with a trio of songs from Blues for Allah, such as “Help on the Way” paired with its sister tune, “Slipknot!,” followed by “Franklin’s Tower.” They pulled out the traditional “Peggy O” and returned to Dead classics with a thumping “Brown-Eyed Women.” Next, the band delivered a first-time cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Baby Don’t You Do It.” After a run-through of Jerry Garcia’s “Sugaree,” they pulled out Tampa Red’s “It Hurts Me Too” and once again ended the set with a debut take on The Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time.”

The latter set was a mixed bag of Dead classics and associated tunes–breaking theme was the addition of Stephen Stills’ beloved classic, “Love The One You’re With,” played for the first time. They followed with a crowd-rousing “I Know You Rider” and returned for an encore take on “Brokedown Palace” and “Touch of Grey.” Billy & the Kids will continue their Daze of the Dead stand on Oct. 31 at Mountain Winery in Saratoga, Calif., followed by a Nov. 2 gig at the Santa Barbara Bowl in Santa Barbara, Calif. Learn more here.

Following Billy & the Kids’ Port Chester, N.Y. stand, Kreutzmann followed up on Instagram, sharing, “I hope that everyone gets to experience the amount of joy that I did playing last night’s show. I still can’t believe that I get to do this. Thanks for being a part of it.”

Many "reviews" I read these days might as well just be the set lists as that is basically all that is said.

It's almost like they weren't even there.......  ;)

Relix mostly has kids and interns "writing" this stuff. The publisher just wants it to be a safe zone to promote music and tours. Nary a critical or interesting comment you will see.

What you will find is a nice sampling of high school SAT words like 'plethora'.

> a debut of “Friend of the Devil,” sans its typical sister tune, “China Cat Sunflower,” instead they added “Ramble on Rose.”

This makes no sense to me at all. Am I missing something?

> Nary a critical or interesting comment you will see.

Or a mention of the second set on Friday being cut short by about half.

Yep, journalism sure ain't what it used to be.

I think AI could write a similar review. Just a bunch of adjectives and song names.

If you made some AI program listen to all the extant GD tapes - would take about a year - I'm sure it could write an excellent review of a Billy and the Kids show.

What a terrible review.  And what a mediocre band.  Really lackluster.  Makes Ratdog look cool.

The second set from Saturday was quite good.  Just watched it on the stream.  Would love to hear from some more folks who were in the room.
