I just went on AXS to sell my tickets for the Santa Barbara show and it looks like it might be about a third sold, if that. I had to schedule an MRI for first thing Friday morning so it looks like I'll be eating these.

Sorry Mike. I hope the MRI is nothing too serious. We went to see Stu Allen and mars Hotel at the Junction last night which was a lot of fun.

Thanks, Paul. My take is that nothing is serious until there's a diagnosis, so it's all good today. But I've been having some bizarre treatment-resistant sleep disturbances for some time now, and my doc wants to rule out that I've had some mini-strokes, even though I don't have any of the typical symptoms of a stroke.

It would be good to rule that out for sure!

so how was the shoe?

Fun setlist!

too bad they crossed out the Darkstar encore

It was a fun time and a good band. Crowd size at about 2K. One of my favorite venues to see music.

Billy just posted that he got the covid and will be sitting out tonight, Chris Tomson from Vampire Weekend will be filling in.

^^^ Here's Billy's full message from his official Instagram account - hope you get better asap Billy K!:

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT regarding tonight’s Santa Barbara Bowl show:

In show business they say the show must go on. In the world of the Grateful Dead, that’s never even been a question. Our community knows how to take lemons and make tie-dye lemonade. We know how to improvise and we know how to jam. And we know how to come together as a community and dance our way through twists and turns while the music plays the bands.

I’ll get right to it then - my wife and I both tested positive for Covid. I’ll be okay other than the immense disappointment and frustration that I’m feeling about having to sit out tonight — I was looking forward to this show since the minute we first talked about it. I’ve been wanting to play the Bowl for years.

I’m very lucky to have the Kids that I do, who have all rallied around me today. As I type this, they are on the stage at the Santa Barbara Bowl getting ready for the show.

As a surprise treat, we were going to have our friend Chris Tomson from Vampire Weekend come out to jam on drums with us for Drums->Space. Chris (“CT”) was already on his way to Santa Barbara when my covid diagnosis came back, and he felt the same way as the rest of the band — the show must go on.

We could have just canceled it outright but we’re all already here and the band and crew have all put so much work into making tonight special, so this is the time for us as Deadheads to come together, celebrate the holiday, and remember that life is precious - any time that we get a chance to honor it by gathering and dancing and singing and reveling, we must do that.

“Day of the Dead” is about spirits, so may the spirit of the Grateful Dead ride with us tonight while the Kids they dance and shake their bones.

For those who opt, full refunds will be issued at the point of sale. I appreciate everyone’s understanding and may the Great Spirit bless the Deadheads.

NFA,
Billy

Wow...,

My friend lives in Santa Barbara and is opting to go to the show anyway...

I sold my tickets (second row) for $20 a piece earlier today because the show seemed to be tragically undersold. Oof.

And was I just calling you to say you are I lucky guy.  Bad news Mike.

Shit happens. Oh, well. What're you gonna do?

Actually, I would think this should entitle me to punch Billy in the dick.

shit piles up

Bummer. I bet the band was just fine without him though, he's not the only drummer and it's not like he sings...

Do we really believe it's COVID? I mean, it may very well be, but who knows?

By sticking with the show, Billy got paid and didn't even have to play! I'm sure there is a "no promises on who will actually show up" clause in the contract, so as long as there is a show, the risk is on the promoter. Slick move, Bill. I'm not judging, just thinking about the business side of a decision like this. Sounds like the promoter wasn't going to be rolling in profit either way.

Here's hoping all these old guys stay healthy and are still able to play when they want to.

Do we really believe it's COVID?

I certainly do. Why would anyone publicly announce that they have an illness that they don't have, and say their wife has it too?

I don't know about you, but my wife would be really really pissed. I'd be in the dog house big time. Then there's the rest of the family to deal with.

"Dad, how could you say that about mom?"

This is Billy K, not Sam Bankman-Fried.
