Welcome to another season of American Gladiators, otherwise known as the NFL.
272 games, with each of the NFL's 32 teams playing 17 games during an 18-week period. The regular season starts Thursday Sept 7 (Thursday games suck) and ends early Jan for most. The competition stretches until Superbowl Sunday (Feb 11) for the two survivors.
In addition to demonstrations of athletic prowess, we get to watch gruesome injuries and loads of commercials while overindulging on food and drink. A chance to get tribal and forget real world worries for a few hours each week until winter really kicks in.
Preseason starts today and everything is up in the air.
The Baltimore Ravens look promising if our very highly paid quarterback and our newly acquired receivers can connect. We have a new offensive coordinator who is reworking things and adding a passing game to our established reputation for running the ball. Our defense looks pretty formidable on paper if the secondary holds up. As always, it's all about who can avoid injuries.
So even though it's still swimsuit weather, it's time to head to the closet and dig out the colors. Let the games begin!

OK, it's early but I'll chime in for a moment, just because.

Don't forget the incredible dedication, sacrifice, amazing demonstrations of team play, improvisation, creativity and the pure beauty of the human spirit while under duress on display.
NFL football is massively fucked up in multiple, very easily defined ways, but it's still the greatest live example of the human condition/in-the-moment human artistic expression that exists in the world.
The men who go between the lines and play that game are absolutely amazing, and despite all the many negatives, NFL football when it's being played is absolutely fucking amazing to watch, and I'm looking forward to watching it again this year.
My team is set up real good and should do well. As always there are questions - is the quarterback the real deal or is he another false prophet? Can the Oline hold up? Will the new defensive coordinator break was isn't broken and mess up a very good thing? Will injuries once again devastate everything?
Right now I'm not overly concerned about any but the last, which is always the wildcard in football. Ultimately, in time all questions will be answered. It's time to play ball.
FUCK 'EM ALL!!!

Well, that was a quick summer
Well, that was a quick summer. September already?
Ravens open at home Sunday against Houston with their (Houston's) rookie QB and their rookie head coach. (Our head coach, John Harbough, has a record of 147-95 in 15 regular seasons, plus 11-9 in the playoffs.) Our goal is to shake the rust off and win, as many of our top guys sat out most of the preseason games to avoid getting hurt.
This year it's all about Lamar and the new receivers they got him. Can he throw the long ball and anticipate where his guys will be? Can he successfully operate in the red zone and score? Will he avoid injury? Jury is out. Over the off-season he signed a five-year, $260 million extension, making him one of the highest paid players in the league, so expectations are high.
Our weaknesses are on Defense; cornerback and edge rusher. Other than that we have a pretty solid and healthy team going into the season. And a new offensive coordinator. Should be interesting.
Play ball! Go Ravens!

Ravens win 25 - 9.
Ravens win 25 - 9.
But the score was not representative of a great caliber of play. Lots of penalties on both sides and not too many plays that would make a highlight reel. And we lost our # 1 running back to a season ending injury. Plus, we incurred some injuries to some other important guys. If ya ask me, Lamar played so-so, ran hot and cold an had to scramble a lot (same as last year). Our defense was pretty good...5 sacks. I'll take an opening day win anytime, but next week against the Bengals is a whole different story.
And thank you 49ers for taking care of Pittsburg.
The best part of the day might have been the food. Baby back ribs and some chicken with some homemade ginger/peach glaze. Followed by some homemade apple pie.

Yeah, because of the immensely unlikeable Aaron Rogers I guess I'm going with that, which is too bad because I really like Robert Saleh.
During his time with the 49ers Saleh continually came across as a very decent, likable, standup guy. Those aren't words often associated with football coaches and maybe under that smile he's as much a cutthroat bastard as most others, but I came to really like him and have been rooting for him in NY.
But with the insufferable punk Rogers playing there now that's going to make that difficult.
Either way, I'm going to miss watching Rogers eat his liver after his annual beatdown by the 49ers in the playoffs.
Those were always good times.

CNN - New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers will miss the rest of the 2023 NFL season after suffering a complete tear of his left Achilles tendon, according to multiple sources.
CNN has reached out to the Jets and Rodgers’ representatives for details.
The Jets indirectly referenced the bleak outlook of the injury on social media, posting on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Not the way any of us wanted it to go, but we know the commitment you’ve made to this team will continue to impact us moving forward. Get well soon, Aaron Rodgers.”

If Brady put on a Jets uniform I would seriously be concerned for his safety. There is a white hot hatred of the Jets in New England that is completely unhinged, and no old quarterback who doesn't desperately need the money should play behind the Jets o-line.

fabs ... this is going to be a fun season for us in the AFC, especially the AFC North.
re Odell - the Ravens seem to like signing "old guys" / previously injured guys in the hopes of a phoenix rising situation. So that wasn't too surprising, especially since it placated Lamar. (Superstar quarterback deserves / demands superstar receivers sort of thing.) He's got a one year contract.
Flowers could be really good this year, except they are currently treating him kinda like a tight end or running back, with short passes in heavy traffic where he stands a greater chance of really getting clobbered, rather than letting him run like hell downfield where he's man-on-man. He's very slippery, can turn on a dime and I hope he stays healthy,

Ravens play Bengals today and it should be a good game as both teams have something to prove after dismal performances last week.
Ravens still have 4 or 5 major guys out on injury - two who protect Lamar on the Offensive Line. I sure hope Lamar gets rid of the ball quickly today. If he dawdles he often has to scramble (potential for injury) or throw on the run (potential for interception).
If our Defense can get a rush going, I think we have a chance.

Damn Ravens lost in the last
Damn Ravens lost in the last second of overtime 22-19 to the Colts by a field goal. At home.
It was a close game throughout, lots of back and forth play, but no excuses -- the Ravens gave the game away at least 4 times in the last quarter / overtime. Granted the Ravens had 5 or more starters out with injuries, there were some questionable calls, and it was wet and windy -- however, Indianapolis came thru by the hair of their chinny chin chin when it counted most.
In the end it was my fault as I switched from drinking tequila to drinking mead instead (hey, it was raining and it's all I had in the house). The oven-cooked pork chop and leftover birthday cake were the most satisfying thing about that game.

That Dolphins coach knows what he's doing. Their offense is nasty, and it's nice to see Mostert having success, he's a good guy.
The Cardinals beating Dallas is a shocker, but it helps the 49ers in a couple of ways.
In two weeks the 49ers host the 'boys on Sunday night, which will be a HUGE NFC game, but they play the Cardinals next week. That's a game that the 49ers could easily overlook with the BIG game the next week, but now Arizona will have the Niners full attention, and they're also now a game up on the Cowboys for playoff seeding.
It's still early, but the NFC is shaping up to be the 49ers, the Eagles, the Cowboys and everyone else, so every loss by the birds & the boys is a win for the Red & Gold.

Ravens were leading the Steelers 10-3 most of the game (playing mediocre ball, at best) and then in the fourth quarter decided to play like they had noodles for brains. Gave it away. Just gave it away. Lost 17 -10. Frankly it was embarrassing.
Dropped balls. Missed catches. Fumbles. Interceptions. A high school team would have performed better.

So it was a 9am Ravens game,
So it was a 9am Ravens game, Yes, a 9 AM game. (Because it was played in England.) Ravens vs Titans. Wake and bake.
Which we won 24 - 16. Thankfully. Because last week we sucked. This week we were a little better. Lots of field goals today (six for us, three for them, I think).
But we still were in the position to give the game away in the fourth quarter. It's a thing with us -- be winning all or most of the game and then turnover the ball, collect some penalties, do something stupid with the clock and lose within the final minutes.
At 4 wins 2 losses our defense seems to the redeeming factor. The offense runs hot and cold. So of course a handful of defensive players got hurt today. So who knows how this season will shake out.
Speaking of shaking out....The fun of the game (besides the anxiety-provoking win) was that it was a breakfast show. Potatoes, eggs, Canadian bacon, bagels, whitefish salad -- it was quite the feast. Strong coffee followed by fresh squeezed orange juice flavored with tequila. By 1pm you're ready for a nap.

Holy cow. The Ravens finally
Holy cow. The Ravens finally played as good as the most optimistic preseason predictions. Textbook execution. A thing of beauty.
The Detroit Lions were 5 and 1 and they seemed like a damn good team. However, the Ravens (4 and 2) crushed them from the start. Scored on every drive or it sure seemed like it (Ravens scored on their first 4 drives.) Shut down the Lions 38 - 6. Now we are 5 and 2!
It wasn't even that the Lions were bad.... the Ravens just had one of those rare "firing on all cylinders" games.
Due to an unfortunate exposure to a covid positive friend a few days ago, to be extra-cautious I watched the game by myself today -- so I was on my own culinary-wise. ( I should be pumped full of antibodies from my own recent bout with that damn covid, sio hopefully the scourge will pass me by.) So I grabbed some boneless spare ribs from the local grocery store (masked, of course) and threw them in the oven with some frozen potatoes and then hit the broiler. Easy peezy. (Boneless spareribs are not actually deboned spareribs. They're made from a boneless pork butt which is actually from the shoulder of the pig.) So I got my meat fix but could have cooked them better. They went well with the leftover mead, though.

Well glad to finally see some chit chat on this thread. Otherwise it's me raving about a meatloaf or something. Can someone please tell me if there are any good teams to keep an eye on out there now that the season is well underway.
I finally got a chance to watch a 49's game. It was hard for me to watch as I get distracted whenever I see a team in purple playing. Sorry for their loss, but the Vikings played with swagger from the start. And I'm not sold on Brock Purdy -- honestly I can't get past his name. Sounds like a character in a Jonny Quest cartoon. Is he any good?
I was most impressed with the Monday Night Football camerawork. It really gets you into the game.

The Eagles and Chiefs have the best records and have been pretty consistent but not overwhelming. I suspect barring injuries they'll tighten up their games. Any of the top 12-14 or so teams could upset the apple cart on any given Sunday. I see Purdy as pretty good but his supporting cast is the secret sauce that will keep them in it. Your Ravers are looking about as good as anybody and seem to be gelling. Jags and the Lions are not to de discounted. Cowboys are faggots(nothing new). Plenty of time left for surprises. Feels like there are more variables than ever.

Now that someone else bumped this thread, I'll chime in. First, really Astro? Uneeded stupidity. What does that mean?
While I have a love/hate relationship with pro sports (they get paid way too much and the cost for a family to go to a game is ridiculous) I enjoy the NFL and NHL.
For football, what Jalen Hurts is doing with those Eagles is pretty amazing.
I'm also paying attention to a couple of quarterbacks from Utah, former-BYU QB Zach Wilson and Jordan Love for the Packers, former QB of Utah State. Neither are setting the world on fire. Also watching former-Utah Ute Tight End Dalton Kincaid (Shit - did I mention THEM again? Ut-oh.) who is with Buffalo now, but Josh Allen isn't having the best year. Kincaid could be like Travis Kelce, but I don't know how he feels about pop music stars. But he has some great potential.

I'm with you on Zac and Jordan having loads of potential. QB is the most demanding position and the supporting cast can make or break your career. Some guys take more time than others to get dialed in, some just never get a coach that helps them realized their potential.
Buffalo has been underperforming for four years. Given their schedule unless they catch BIG fire it's more of the same.
No clue what you are referring to with "First, really Astro? Uneeded stupidity. What does that mean?"

Ravens 31 - Cardinals 24.
Ravens 31 - Cardinals 24.
The reviews I read today about yesterday's game all say that the Ravens reverted to form and played an inconsistent game with a some strong defense. And Lamar showed that when he gets confused by an opposing defense and gets locked in the pocket for too long he falters. And never rebounds.
But they won.
It's yet to be determined if the Ravens have the killer instinct of a championship team or will be complacent and end up being an "allllllllllmost" team again.
I missed the game as I was driving thru the Adirondack Mountains in the rain at the time. From the Canadian border to near Catskill.
Lots of lakes and summer cabins (camps). That part where you can see the artificial ski slopes and launch towers built for the Olympics in Lake Placid is always cool. And the countryside gets surprisingly rugged in some places. Hudson Valley is undergoing a resurgence, too -- mostly because of people that moved there during covid. I did end up eating a delicious homemade Burmese meal that I would have never made myself, so that was a great way to celebrate a win. I brought my own bottle of mead.
But, I digress....
My local station would not stream to my cell. Sirius radio had scores but not the plays. I had a friend texting me scores, though.
Who knows a good way to listen to and/or watch games live when you are out of your local area driving around / traveling? Without landline internet or parking by a Starbucks. (Many services block live streams to phones while allowing them on desktops or laptops.)

Wow. Ravens steamrolled another good team -- Seattle. We're 7 and 2 now.
Final score Ravens 37 Seattle 3. And we gave them that field goal.
The Defense shut the run down and the Offense kept the pedal to the floor the entire game. No 4th quarter meltdown today. In fact, towards the end we put in our second string QB -- and he scored, too. Most importantly - no injuries.
My buddy cooked up some lamb chops and pork chops in a cast iron skillet so it was a meatfest today. Well, there were some mashed potatoes. But not a green in sight. Technically I had a couple grapes and they were green. Just sipped a little tequila on the rocks to wet the whistle. I feel like the Ravens are the best team in th NFL right now. I say that as a Lamar fan but more so an Eagles fan. The Eagles make me nervous and wish they had picked up one more piece at the trade deadline but they did well just the same. They win by a touch down or less quite frequently for the best team in the country. Granted their schedule is tough but a breezy win every now and then would be great. The Ravens seem to be moving on all cylinders. And they are beating good teams handily and in different ways. It's not just the Lamar show. Both the Eagles and Ravens seem to be playing more team ball than individual ball and it's working. Either way - I'm glad to see their success and hope it continues.

Browns 33 Ravens 31. The
Browns 33 Ravens 31. The Browns’ game-winning field goal came with no time left on the clock.
That means the Ravens somehow lost a game that was tied 0-0 for 40 seconds (when the Ravens made their first score) and then led by Baltimore for the next 58:20.
The Ravens led throughout the first half and looked playoff caliber -- then alas, gradually gave the game away during the third and fourth quarters. Penalties, turnovers, bad clock management. They were even up by 14 in the fourth despite shoddy play. By the very end of the game they still led by one point. Conversely, Cleveland started slow and looked pretty good by the end of the game.
Ravens better get better soon -- they have a Thursday night game this week against Cincinnati.
Our stove / oven at home went out (the boiler coil melted, never seen that before), so got some to-go food from the local eatery. It was so filling I didn't even put out any junk food. The game gave me indigestion anyway. Leftover mead was the sweetest part of the afternoon. Even the water sucked today -- we bought some typically-normal Dark Park bottles with lunch and during the game my buddy said it tasted funny. I smelled it and it smellled exacly like my aquarium water does when I clean the tank. It was a sealed bottle. Strange. Don't buy that stuff.

Thursday Night Football sucks. Just throws a wrench into the week's routine.
But Ravens won 34 - 20 over the Bengals in a very choppy game. The Ravens move to 8-3 with the victory and are in control in the AFC North.
However, on the first drive we lost our star offensive weapon, tight end Mark Andrews. He's out for the season. Plus, both quarterbacks got injured. Lamar came back on the field but Burrow didn't.
The weirdest thing about the game was that play got stopped twice for "drone over the field" -- a new threat to professional sports.
An 8:15pm start also ruins culinary plans, as everyone has eaten dinner and desert by then. So it was junk food only and just a wee bit of tequila as I had to drive home in the dark. Like I said, Thursday night games suck.

The Ravens win in sudden death overtime with a 76 yard punt return over the Rams 37 - 31!
Now they are 10 and 3. The Rams played strong ball and the Ravens were just so-so but came through in the end. The score bounced back and forth throughout so it was a nailbiter.
For some reason the Ravens favored the pass even though it was raining most of the game. I don't know what happened to our running game.
It was all tied up and I was streaming the game on my laptop on Fox Sports and as overtime started they stopped the stream to show the next game -- thankfully I had an audio stream going from a local radio station.

Hi Lance, hope you are well. I haven't noticed you post for a while.
First thing I did when I got to town was check ticket prices for that game. Ticketwhatever wanted $200 for a seat, which was expected, but since I haven't been to that stadium I don't know what constitutes a good seat. But I was willing to shell it out.
However, because I have to be up in the foothills for the Holiday with the family, it looks like I will be watching it from a friend's couch. He's a SF local and a big 49 fan so it should be a fun evening for both of us. It's gonna have playoff game excitement.
Frankly, if the Ravens play like they did yesterday against the Rams (up and down), they will lose to the 49ers. But if the Ravens bring their A game and can play their best ball consistently for 4 quarters, watch out! The team is hungry and has multiple ways to beat opponents -- they've been a Swiss Army knife type operation lately.
I can't wait.

I generally have no ill will toward KC but yesterdays post game was just an embarrassment to that organization. He was offside. It was as clear a foul as there is in the NFL and it has been called 11 times this year. I mean they actually went on camera and said they should not be held to the standard of all those other teams. Thanks for that stat, El Nino. Mahomes was acting like it's never called and the refs always warn the offending players when they see it.
From Gene Steratore, Rules Analyst on CBS
"When officiating the line of scrimmage, general philosophy is not to be overly technical and split hairs over very minor infractions (such as a receiver's hand slightly breaking the LOS). However, when an infraction is so egregious and obvious, a flag has to be thrown. Kadarius Toney is blatantly lined up offside and in the neutral zone. You rarely see an offsides penalty on the offense, but that is not because this play in #BUFvsKC isn't a foul. It is because a receiver rarely lines up offsides."
One ref who was there said he was so far over the line they couldn't see the football.

>>>Hi Lance, hope you are well. I haven't noticed you post for a while<<<
Thanks for the hope Alan. Unfortunately, for a while now my health has been performing more like the Raiders than the 49ers. It's a variety of things and nothing that's killing me (I hope) but it has me mostly land-locked and a bit grumpy these days.
I think mostly because of that I noticed a while back that my various online posts were taking a snarky, negative tone, which is not the attitude I want to project, so I thought it might be best to back away from the keyboard for a while.
That's something I'm planning on continuing, but your comment about Sunday morning 10:00am games struck a chord (I fucking hate them) and got me typing.
As for the Christmas night Ravens/49ers game, that could be a Super Bowl preview, but just on its own it will be a huge game for both teams and Vanilla Stadium should be rocking.
You won't be missing much from the venue experience though. The place is serviceable but it's bland, lacking gravitas, and it's a pain getting into and especially out of. The crowd should be well lubricated and fired up so the energy will be good, but the venue is meh.
Still, the game itself on Christmas evening should make for an exciting game, and while I've missed a few games this season I'm planning on being at that one.
BTW, I think you mentioned that you'll be seeing Phil at the Fillmore this weekend. I have a ticket for the Sunday show which I may or not make, most events these days are game-time decisions for me, but if you're at that one look in the very back corner on the right side of the room, between the elevator and the entry doors from the lobby. That's where I like to hang in that venue, right against the corner wall. If I'm there I'll be the tall lug wearing a Giants hat, be sure to say hi.
BTW, For whatever reason, it took the Fillmore staff FOREVER to get the crowd in at the Phil show last month, many people missed most or all of the first set, so if you're going I recommend you get in line early.

Ravens fans, including myself
Ravens fans, including myself, are super excited about the 49ers matchup but pundits are saying that that game is the most expendable one out of the remaining 4 games due to playoff spot concerns. This week we have Jacksonville, then 49ers, then Miami, then Pittsburg. Supposedly the most challenging Dec schedule out there. They are saying "it doesn't really matter and if we have to lose one...." I don't know about that -- winning would sure be a confidence booster for the players. Either way it will be fine entertainment and there should be lots of good snacks around.
Jacksonville is a 530 game (sad face emoli). I don't see myself in line for Phil Sunday with earbuds in (maybe at the restaurant beforehand), so I guess I will have to reply on texts from friends back East. I wonder if one gets cell phone reception in the Fillmore?

Brock Purdy who? Ravens Defense gets 5? interceptions. They played like a pack of hungry predators.
The final score doesn't reflect the way the Ravens dominated the night after a slow start. They seemed to be up by a touchdown or two or three most of the evening.
And even though Lamar wasn't the smooth, precise Joe Montana type quarterback, he moved the ball downfield when it counted. He played smart ball throughout (which he doesn't always do). He's definitely in the running for MVP now,

Holy shit. The game started with the league's top Offense (Miami, 11-4) matched against the top Defense (Ravens, 12-3). Ravens ended up winning 56 - 19. Just clinched the AFC's top position and are looking like the best team in th NFL at the moment, with one game to go.
After a quick score by Miami, Lamar replied with 321 passing yards and a career-high five passing touchdowns.
The depth of this team cannot be understated, with some major guys out. Everyone who plays seems super focused on winning. The second-efforts these guys are making are inspirational and film worthy.
We are flying high now like a cannon ball shot out of a canon, mowing down anything in its path.
Great way to end 2023 and hopefully no one else gets hurt next week against a "meaningless" season-ending game against Pittsburg.

Had to nap for an hour, so no time to cook. So it was reheated coffee and some french fries today. Not very gourmet. No interest in beer this early in the morning, for sure.

At 71, I don't think Belichek was up for the tear down and rebuild the Pats situation dictates. Sounds like he and Kraft were of one accord. Carroll won't be heading there either. If either of those guys takes another job, it will be somewhere they can win right now.

Pats are definitely not in tank mode. The defense has a solid base and they have plenty of cap room and decent draft capital, including the #3 pick. Kraft is 82 and it's his last run before handing over the reins. He's motivated.
I do like the Mayo selection. A high quality character and hopefully a long term solution. We will see.

I wish they would have at least interviewed some people out side of the organization not to mention that Vrabel is also available. I think Josh McDaniels proved that coaching under Bill doesn't necessarily lead to future success.
Anyway looking forward to the seeing Miami play in -27 wind chill in KC on Saturday.

One more time, Pacers &
So, one more time, it's the Packers & Niners in the playoffs. A lot of history there.
Love sure has looked good lately, and the 49ers will be coming off what amounts to three weeks off. That's been good for some important players to heal up, but that evil "rust" can also come into play. A lot of storylines in this one.
A Saturday night game, it should be raucous in Vanilla Stadium. On paper the 49ers are the better team, but that's the thing about NFL playoff games, at this point every team is good and in one game anything can happen.
Playoff games are what it's all about in all sports, and NFL playoff games are especially crazy. I'm definitely looking forward to being there Saturday night.
It's time to Hate Love!!! DOWN with the Packers!!!!!

OK, I'm messing around on the
OK, I'm messing around on the internet and came back here, so I'll comment on the Belichick situation.
I find it interesting that among all the tonnage of jabber we've heard about replacing Belichick the coach, there has been almost no talk about replacing Belichick the General Manager.
At least to my outsider's eye, it hasn't been so much the coaching that's gone south in New England, it's the talent that's cratered, and if Belichick as reported was really willing to give up that area of player acquisition control it might have been wise to keep him as the coach and look to hire a quality GM, something they have to do anyway, to work with him.
IMO, if you give him great players he'll find good coordinators and he'll continue winning. I think it was a mistake to fire Belichick; Kraft should have just hired a new group of top quality player personnel staff, let Belichick focus on coaching and I believe things would have righted in NE.
Washington just hired the 49ers top personnel guy, who is damn good, and if/when that team starts winning it will be the HC who will get the credit, but I'm expecting to see the talent quickly rise there as well.
Fortunately I don't care about New England's issues, but if I did I'd be more than a bit focused on who the next GM will be, something no one else seems to be that concerned about, but is where the real issues seem to lay.

I just can't get into watching humans give themselves brain damage, even if they are consenting adults. With more research done they are finding even high school players are getting brain damage from CTE. I realize I'm in a minority position on this. I'm not saying ban football, as consenting adults should basically be allowed to do as they wish as long as they aren't harming others.
I do wonder about tackle football be played in middle and high school. And why does the NFL get to use our universities as minor leagues for developing their talent? I think the baseball model of having minor league teams is the way to go. The NFL could certainly afford this. Maybe this should have been a new thread, not sure. It is how I feel about the NFL 2023/2024. Carry on,

Well that was a crappy Wild Card Weekend. Just one close game. It was great for upsets but other than that not great to watch if you didn't care who won. Glad to see the Lions advance. I wonder what city has taken over the longest playoff drought now.
The demise of the Cowboys, Eagles and Dolphins has been one for the ages. All three of those teams looked unbeatable at different times during the season.
Would have been nice to see the Dolphins play somewhere other than that freezer. I don't understand why indoor and warm weather teams don't go for the whole week before the game. You can't adjust to that cold in one day. If you saw the halftime interview with the Dolphins coach he sounded like Biden. That kind of cold makes your brain stop working if you aren't used to it.
As for the Pats and the GM role the fan base is all over that and have very strong opinions about who shouldn't get the job. I don't follow that closely anymore so don't have an opinion, but no way Mayo gets that authority. Would be fun to see Belichick and Saban team up to coach some Div 2 college team or a high school team.

I hate being reminded by local talking heads about the one seed 49ers team that got knocked out in the first round by the Vikings, but it wouldn't surprise me if history repeats itself Saturday.

Yeah Googly, while I haven't
Yeah Googly, it's funny you mention that. I haven't heard anyone else bring it up, but for the past few days I've been thinking quite a bit about that game in '87.
Very similar circumstances to this season.
That was Montana's worst big-game performance of his career, the entire team came out flat and they got punched in the mouth by a good/not great team.
After that game people were calling for Walsh's head, saying Joe was washed up, that Eddie should blow the whole thing up. And that was before social media; imagine how it will go if a similar situation occurs on Saturday.
Or don't imagine it, and just hope that history won't repeat.
I was 27 when Anthony Carter & the Vikings shocked our world at Candlestick in 1987. I was disappointed, but I knew they were good and I had plenty of time then to be patient (and the best of times did come right after that) but in these much later days I'm not in such a patient mindset. If they lose to Green Bay (or Detroit the week after) I won't be nearly as reactionary as many will be around here, but I will be more than disappointed.
And that's because I believe that the only team that can beat the 49ers this year is the 49ers, but to get #6 this year they're going to have to run a full gauntlet and beat three outstanding teams in a row, so they can't afford any lackluster or even average performances (in a more fair world they'd be playing the mediocre Bucs this week instead of the rising Packers, oh well).
But, they ARE good enough to beat three outstanding teams in a row, they just have to do it.
No foolish turnovers, not too many stupid penalties, and for the love of god HOLD ONTO THOSE PUNTS!!!
Hopefully they're listening.

I'm rooting for the 49ers,,,,, so they can play the Ravens again.
Saturday is the big day, we play Houston and as you may remember, Lamar has a history of blowing playoff games after great seasons. Or getting injured. We are hoping this year's team is different and that the bye week doesn't mess them up. We are going into it relatively healthy and if the O-line plays well and gives Lamar some time and if the D-line can put some serious pressure on the rookie....
Biggest hope: We bulldoze them and roll into the next round. It's possible if our Defense plays really well. The offense will put up points, but the Defense has to disrupt their passing game.
Biggest fear: A last minute interception thrown by an over confidant Lamar or a big hail mary completion by C.J. Stroud in the final seconds.

Since I work on Sundays. I don't follow the NFL like I used to. Growing up in D.C., I'm still a fan of the Burgundy & Gold, but I don't care for the new Commanders name, and miss calling them the Redskins, like most of the fanbase. We've sucked for a while, but now that the Snyders have sold the team, it feels like our fortunes are changing. It will be interesting to see how long they stick with Ron Rivera as HC. His rope must be getting pretty short by now.
Here in Seattle, the big talk is Pete Carroll getting kicked to the curb. That guy did a lot of good things for the Seahawks, including leading them to their only title. As he still had the desire and energy for the job, his exit is awkward.
My older brothers were all on the Browns bandwagon this year, so I felt bad for them. The Joe Flacco revival was a nice story, but it had a cruel ending. Nevertheless, things are looking up in Cleveland

Ravens win 34 - 10 over Houston and advance to the AFC Championship playoff game. Win that and we're in the Superbowl.
It looked a little dicey at halftime, but whatever drugs or satanic rituals or holy ghost prayin they do in the locker room during halftime; it worked. The second half Ravens were like a football playing machine....relentless.
Lamar wouldn't take no for an answer (didja see when he was running and came to a dead stop and the defenders whizzed by and he started running again?). He threw for 2 touchdowns and ran two in.
The local feasting was noteworthy, as well. I brought a couple lbs of hot steamed shrimp so I didn't really have to cook, but someone made crabcakes from scratch, someone made lamb, someone made nachos, someone made mac and cheese...I sampled some bacon jam and some fancy cheeses...I even found some gluten free stouts at the local market (which is rare) which were fairly decent.
All in all, a great evening in Baltimore.

The Niners pulled that one
The Niners pulled that one out of their ass... they better treat every single drive like that last one from here on out if they want to have any chance (and hopefully Deebo is back in 3 weeks IF they can manage to get past a very good and hungry Lions' team). Luckily it's supposed to not rain this Sunday here, so small hand Brock should have a better showing. I wish he would have just stuck with the glove, but it could also have been the 3 week layoff plus playoff jitters.
On the other end of the spectrum, the KC Swifties seem to be playing their best ball when it matters and that F'n Mahomes just keeps doing Mahomes things. I would not bet against him breaking more hearts again this weekend, and even though no one wants to face that guy in the Superbowl, at least their defense is less dominant than Baltimore's, so keeping the score close would be much more doable.

Compared to what?
Well, relatively speaking I'm OK, although that game on Saturday didn't help my nerves or my heart. It sure was exciting though. There's nothing quite like the energy, excitement & glory of an intense NFL playoff game. Experiencing bursting joy with 70,000 people at the exact same moment is a hell of a drug, and it reminded me of why after 42 years I still go through all the hassles and expense to experience it live.
So, a review? OK, deep breath, here goes........
Throughout the game and right up until fucking Greenlaw finally went down at the end, I thought the Packers were going to win that game.
I thought the 49ers were clearly suffering from the effects of having not prepared to play a meaningful game for three weeks. They were uncharacteristically sluggish, they were out of rhythm on offense, they were slow to react on defense (why they were slipping so much) and were consistently taking bad angles.
Conversely, I thought the Packers were sharp, quick and on top of everything they were doing. They were prepared and ready to play.
And like most, I also thought the rain must have been messing with Purdy, because he was missing many of the throws he usually makes.
Overall, I walked out thinking that the 49ers played poorly and were lucky to win.
After dispassionately re-watching the game again at home, I agreed with my first two takes, but now don't agree so much on the other two. I don't think the rain bothered Purdy as much as it seemed. He definitely didn't play his best game, but he really only threw a couple of poor, unforced errant passes. On most of his misses he was either forced to throw too soon because of pressure or his receivers were slightly off rhythm or out of position (often because the Pack was playing good defense).
As for them playing "poorly", after watching it again I came away thinking that it was more a heavyweight NFL playoff game between two excellent teams, that the Packers played fucking GOOD and the Niners not as bad as it seemed.
I think that both teams played well, both made big plays and forced mistakes by the other, both got some lucky breaks, and both teams also played poorly at times. The difference was that in the end the 49ers played well when they HAD to, and the Packers didn't. That's what winning teams do.
Oh, and that's also what great quarterbacks do, which is what Purdy did, and Love didn't.
Purdy didn't play great, but he did make some great throws through the game, he kept his composure when things weren't going well and most importantly he was perfect when he HAD to be, while everyone's favorite new toy Jordan Love faded and ultimately threw the game away with a brain dead heave in his biggest moment.
Love really came on this season and he looks like he's going to be an excellent QB, but if I was a Packers fan that final throw would stick in the back of my mind just a little bit, because it's those moments where the contenders separate from the pretenders. It was just one play and he's just getting started, but both young QBs faced that moment and one rose while the other fell.
As for Purdy, many say that he doesn't have the physical tools to be great, that he's being carried by the talent around him, that he's just a "game manager".
Tools? He's not 6-5 with a rocket arm and a sprinter's speed, but he's quick, his mechanics & rhythm are rock solid so he's accurate and on time with his throws, and maybe the two most important tools, the one between his ears & the one in his chest, he has in spades.
Carried? Maybe, but in every team sport even the greatest players need great players around them to win.
Game manager? I don't even know what that means, but since especially these days we all love to stick simplistic labels on everything, I'll say that the dude is more than just a manager, he's a Field General. He always knows exactly what he's doing, he's always in control and he's calm under pressure.
I don't know if this facebook clip will play on here, but to me it's a subtle but clear sign of why he's so good...
https://www.facebook.com/49ersCBS/videos/1077436293403555
On that play the tight end was supposed to go in motion, but with the clock ticking down Purdy stops him because he saw/he felt how the defense was set, he gets the snap off at the last possible moment and runs the play.
When talking about Purdy after the game a couple of players pointed that play out. It may be a little thing, but under the biggest pressure Purdy was in complete control, he handled the situation and he executed the play.......... touchdown.
There are definitely better quarterbacks in the league, but as a 49ers fan I am very happy to have that guy running the team I root for. To all the naysayers? Well, as Prince would have said, we'll just put them over there.
Now, next week. The Lions have scared me all season. They've flown under the radar but they're damn good. They're explosive on offense and can stuff the run on defense, and maybe most importantly they're a classic underdog, a "team of destiny", which carries a certain gravitas.
EVERYBODY (except 49ers fans) wants to see them win. The 49ers are the Evil Empire this week for sure.
The Niners are going to have to play better than they did last week, and I expect that they will, but Detroit is nasty, and last week also demonstrated once again how important Deebo Samuel is to the Niners offense. I'll be shocked if he doesn't play in such an important game, but will he hold up?
If he does then I think the people of Detroit will have to wait another year. If he doesn't then I think it will be close, and the winner will have two weeks to figure out how to deal with Lamar Jackson and that great Ravens defense.
So, here we go, one more time.
GOOOOO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't seen this town so
I haven't seen this town so crazed about a sports team since.... well a long time ago. Like 1971 when Baltimore last hosted an AFC Championship game.
I don't see the Chiefs steamrolling their way to victory. The Ravens are too hungry. Lamar will run across hot coals to win this game. Also, the Ravens are peaking at the right time and are as healthy as they've been all year. If Baltimore can take an early lead, the Defense will keep Mahomes in check. They will be hunting him down relentlessly.
I'll stick with my "prediction"; the Raven's offense will do enough to win, but their Defensive line has to hold off the run throughout the game and most importantly, the secondary has to prevent a last minute miracle comeback from Kansas City. Unfortunately, Mahomes is capable of pulling that off. I'll be optimistic and take Baltimore by 9.
The wild card factor is the weather -- they are calling for rain and a slippery ball can take unpredictable bounces.

Ravens keep stepping on their dicks. They just lack poise and focus. Did anyone tell them it's win or go home.
Kelsey surely gained points with his blonde billionaire girlfriend
I look forward to seeing her outfit for Vegas!
Suspect the Niners are sitting up in their chairs watching the Chiefs performance.

embarrassing. simply
embarrassing. simply embarrassing. I'll go with being out-coached.
...And we had such good food, too. We made some special jambalaya using local lamb sausage (and chicken and shrimp and rice and spices, etc) -- so lambalaya. And loads of other goodies. I was drinking good stuff, too --- tequila early and a couple GF faux stout beers later in the day. Nothing helped.
Looking back it was a fun season. However everything sucks at the current moment. So close, and we squandered a big opportunity. Where was out Offensive line? Where was the Offense? What's up with the stupid turnovers? And fuck those refs.
Now it's officially winter and the only thing to look forward to is spring. I'm not a baseball fan, so I have to wait until Sept to get my sports fix. Then again, the draft is only 3 months away.....

Quoth the Raven never more.
Quoth the Raven never more.
But furthermore, jeez Louise, Alan. The Orioles have the most stacked assemblage of young talent we'll probably ever see in our lifetimes, Camden Yards is a great place to catch a game, and they have Mr. Splash! Come on, who else has Mr. Splash?
Even if you have been somehow traumatized by the Naional Pastime (you don't strike me as a commie....were you the last person picked for the kickball teams in your 2nd Grade P.E. class?), you still have Lacrosse to fall back on, which both Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland excel at. Tough luck for the Ravens, but it's still a good time for Sports fans in Maryland.

Wow. Just, wow.
Wow. Just, wow.
Sometimes it's absolutely better to be lucky than good.
But being lucky AND good is best, and the 49ers were both today.
Whew.
What a game.
Even as a 49ers fan I feel bad for Lions fans, they were so close. But, to the winners go the spoils, so we Niners fans get one more game, and another shot at that damned Mahomes.
Aren't we all sick of fucking Mahomes by now?
I have a feeling I'm soon going to be more sick of him than I already am.
He's so good.
Anyway, sorry Lions fans.
That was one hell of a game.
Now, FUCK THE CHIEFS!!!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, Brock Purdy, not so bad.
The presumptive league MVP Lamar Jackson, not so good.
And Vegas? A perfect town for the Super Bowl. The most bloated American event played in a first class venue in the #1 party town in America, the most decadent town in America?
It checks all the boxes.
Win the game Niners, while everyone else loses their money and their minds.

Dave, don't forget Duckpin Bowling. I guess I'm gonna have to grab a few crab cakes and a lawn chair and mosey down to the local Bowling Alley. I hear the Allstate Insurance Auditing Department team is tearing up the lanes in the Wednesday Night League.
I wonder if I can rent some of those spiffy two tone bowling shoes? I guess if they spray enough Lysol in them they'll be ok to wear.

l am enjoying the MAGA meltdown. All the people who said they quit watching the NFL after Kaepernick are loosing their minds over Taylor Swift going to the Super Bowl after months of calling her a distraction, and now they have to hope the San Francisco team wins. Heads are exploding and just when you thought they couldn't be more stupid.

Re: Ms. Swift at the SB, I
Re: Ms. Swift at the SB, I had heard she'd be playing her 4th consecutive show on her tour in Tokyo the night before, but her fans are going bonkers with the logistics.
The star has a concert in Tokyo on Feb. 10 — the night before the game, which will be held in Las Vegas on Feb. 11.
By one fan's math, if Swift ends her show in Tokyo by 11 p.m. — or midnight at the latest — and boards a 13-hour flight, she could be back on U.S. soil on the night of Feb. 10, in time for some sleep before the game. The Super Bowl kicks off on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time, 3:30 p.m. in Las Vegas.
Her tour resumes in Australia Feb 16th.

I think the tide will be turning for you now Turtle.
Jim Harbaugh doesn't lose 90% of anything.
He's a strange bird and I don't know if he'll be a long-term savior, but he's a leader and motivator and he's going to toughen up the Chargers.
He may end up melting down like he did with the 49ers, but at least for a while the Chargers are going to be fun to watch, and are going to win more games.
Just not two weeks from now.

Atta' boy Googly.
Atta' boy Googly.
While my heart is filled with hope, my brain is filled with doubt.
Our boys in Scarlet & Gold are certainly good enough to beat the Chiefs, but I fear the Chiefs defense, their experience and the Mahomes factor will be very difficult to overcome.
I believe that the Chiefs are in the middle of what in the future will be known as their great dynasty, and Mahomes is well on his way to shoving into the GOAT conversation.
The 49ers are an excellent, championship caliber team, but their defense has been a bit shaky and they're running into a buzzsaw. I can't help but feel that the Niners are in the place the '84 Dolphins, the '88 Bengals and the '89 Broncos found themselves in; now it could be our turn to be slapped down by greatness.
But........... if the 49ers play their best game, especially on defense, they are definitely good enough to win.
Either way, it's been a great season and it will be fun to see what happens.
CHOP THE CHOP!!!
GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!

Word on the street is that
Word on the street is that the playoffs are rigged (why else would the NFL's best running team only call 6 running plays against the Chiefs?) so that Kansas, with an assist from Taylor Swift's marketing magic, can be crowned America's Team and NFL fandom will spread throughout the world. Follow the money. Someone's getting very rich off all the new gambling and pay per view opportunities. Payoffs to a couple refs, or a coach or two, or even to a player or two, are peanuts.
I'm not saying I believe it, but I sure hope the 49ers win and pop that bubble. It's conceivable -- as atrociously bad as the Ravens played, they were only down by a touchdown in the end.

Taking the Chiefs.
Taking the Chiefs. With his history, it's hard to bet against Mahomes. You just know he's gonna do it, pulling rabbits from a hat if needed. And I like Andy Reid. But either is OK. Two of the best teams.
