R.E.M.'s original members, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe reconvened for the first time since 2007 last night at their induction into the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame. They performed "Losing My Religion", which may serve as their epitaph as their resistance to a full-fledged reunion seems genuine.
Nice of them to give us the one-off. Talking Heads should take note.

I've been watching a lot of REM vids recently. Never was a huge fan but maybe nostalgia wise it's connecting with me now.
If I had mutli billions of dollars it would be fun to get these bands back together as a fund raiser to humanity. Make it impossible for them to say no.

I like the idea of a humanitarian cause benefit. Something like Putting The Band Back Together To Put The World Back Together.

The Replacements and Rage
The Replacements and Rage Against The Machine go on that list too.
Mix some of those together with a few still-running acts (The Stones, The Who, U2. Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, Madonna. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Willie Nelson) and a few for the kids (Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Kendrick Lamar) plus a few random active bands with a social conscience (The Roots, Billy Strings, Tedeschi Trucks Band), and you'd have a big event.

>>>Nice of them to give us
>>>Nice of them to give us the one-off. Talking Heads should take note<<<
The Talking Heads already did their one-off, at the RR Hall of Fame. The tension between them and the lack of group "tension" (the good kind) when they played was pretty obvious. As much as I love them, I think it's probably wise for them to keep the lid on.
As for REM, I have always been a bit surprised that they shut it down and have kept it shut. I was never a big fan so I didn't follow them or their story closely, but it's my recollection that they were still putting out good new material and their popularity was still high when they broke up. I would guess that's mostly on Stipe, who always seemed to have an arms-length at best relationship with being a rock star.
In that interview I thought it was interesting when he talked about watching old videos of the group. He made it sound like he was watching something from a different life.
It's too bad, because unlike the Talking Heads I think REM would still work if they got back together, but it seems clear that's not going to happen.
