Debate

Forums:

"This is the first presidential rematch since 1956, and the first time a current president has faced a former president since 1892. Biden and Trump are the oldest presidential candidates in history, and among the least liked. Also, as you may have heard, one of the candidates was recently convicted of a crime. The word “unprecedented” was invented for 2024."

"Nuzzi: In this debate, both candidates have much more to lose than they have to gain. For Biden to succeed, he needs to appear less old than Trump appears crazy — as he did in 2020, by just coming across as the more normal man."

[Bruni: OK, let’s finish with a lightning round — or a lightning-ish round — that also brings just a dab of needed levity into the mix. On Thursday night, what one word does Biden utter most often?

Continetti: “C’mon.” Nuzzi: “Man.” As in, “C’mon, man,” or “Really, man,” or “I’m not kidding around, man.” Or, as he famously said in a 2020 debate, “Will you shut up, man?”

Bruni: What one word does Trump utter most often?

Continetti: “Sleepy.” Nuzzi: “Indeed.” No, I’m kidding. Probably, “very,” as in, “Joe Biden is very, very bad,” or “very, very dishonest,” or “very, very old.”]

I expect more dictating and bloviating than actual debating.

this won't move the needle either way

people know who they're voting for

people on the fence are always on the fence

gives them a sense of feeling smart

>>>>people on the fence are always on the fence     gives them a sense of feeling smart

Ya know TOD, you have a point. But how people who think they're smart can not see what the choice is by now is somewhat baffling. There's no playing "hard to get." Do your job.

The advertising industry will win the debate.

I hope the moderators ask specific policy questions, and not drama nonsense...  ah to dream the dream...

Meanwhile, I watched CNN for a bit yesterday, and they had a bit on mic muting, which looked interesting.  Drump can yak all he wants, but won't be heard...  I kind of like that idea!

odds are 50/50 no 45

>>>The advertising industry will win the debate.

Like the local media selling all the PAC money ads win the primaries. We had a Gov race, Senator, and Reps, not to mention the statewide locals. Glad THAT'S done. Tired of hearing about bringing  "Utah values" to DC. Like the Taliban has to advertise in Afghanistan?

>Meanwhile, I watched CNN for a bit yesterday, and they had a bit on mic muting, which looked interesting.  Drump can yak all he wants, but won't be heard...  I kind of like that idea!

I seen that too, and it will be great for laughs as Biden is talking political points and Trump is on the split screen turning blue, and spittle dripping from his mouth. I expect him to leave the area behind the podium and start screaming his crazy shit. At that point I hope Biden comes off the top rope with a drop kick to the head.

Kyle Clark in CO should moderate all debates. Here is a clip from the debate with Boebert

All sleepy joe has to do is call 45 a convicted felon (and also an adjudicated rapist) a couple times and he'll lose his shit 100%

He needs to bring up his rankings of worst President ever, oh so many buttons to push, c'mon Joe push them all.

>>Kyle Clark in CO should moderate all debates. Here is a clip from the debate with Boebert <<

this guy KILLS

If no one's suggested drinking game words yet, I'll go with Joe saying "Folks." No driving after.

it's starting off like a game show

Omg we are so, so fucked

Biden looks too old, oh wait we knew that. Trump lies and distorts... same as it ever was.

I threw in the towel at the 15 minute mark for my emotional well being.

Bullshit arrogant lies versus wispy rambling explanations.

Trump is being Trump and Biden wasn't prepared for him? How did they let him come off as so feeble? Nobody gave him a cough drop? Or a hit of speed?

I turned it on for a bit. Going to finish the next episode of Dexter.

OMG we are so, so fucked x 100. sad

THIS IS CLASSIC - CLASSIC DISINFORMATION - trump projecting on Biden everything that HE actually is

(and Gavin Newsome is now frantically pacing around the room, clutching his cell phone, just begging it to ring... "Why don't they call me? Why? Why?")

maybe after his chin on chest show, after Drums > Space, Biden will break out a strong Dew to close...... one can hope

I wish, Alan .... more like: Money, Money > Day Job

Trump lied. Biden didn't deliver.

I agree with those that say if Biden dropped out and the Democrats put in any white man that wears a tie and is *moderate* would beat Trump easily.

Joe smoked him in the second half.

Morals of an Alley Cat !  lmao

Joe won IMHO

Now they got Biden at an afterparty telling rambling John Wayne jokes to a crowd. I'm not sure, but I think he ended his thank you speech muttering, "I wanna go home with you" to the people in the front row. Did I hear that correctly?

The trouble with debates is that they can say anything. No fact checks, no restrictions.  Not sure chump said one truthful thing the whole night.  But his targets are too stupid to understand and just eat that shit up.

Isn't there a legal stimulant they could have given Biden?  I think I might have done a better job. And I am not a public speaker. At all.

th-1092263544.jpg

I will give Biden credit for the entertainment value of the  humorous looks of astonishment he sent chumps way.

I want to see the banter between them during the commercials. Doubt they were filming but maybe someone did on their phone.

Oh shit

We can pick apart and analyze "who won" but the reality is in the press headlines, and like it or not, that's what the general voting public will gauge it by. Fasten your seat belts

The people suffering the  biggest losses so far are women with the overturn of roe vs.wade.

I tuned in for 7 minutes, and in that 7 minutes, the only tactic dump employed was fear mongering.  It works bc his base is either wealthy or low iq / racist / evangelical.

If you're working middle class, keep going to work, keep dealing with inflation , and , like Carlin said, this is the best we can do, feel lucky you're not homeless

In reality, that's the best most of us have to look forward to, no matter who wins.

It appears the Democratic Cabal are hell bent on driving off a cliff, in slow motion, with Joe Biden. There is nobody else in the entire party who can beat a sociopathic criminal?

The question is whether they don't care (as long as they keep control of the party) or whether they just don't have anyone else who can win.

Bottom line is whether keeping Biden on the ballot will make it more likely that Trump wins.  Simple as that.

It's over.  Prepare for Trump's 2nd (and never ending) term.

The high IQ party came up with Joe Biden.

It's obvious that the "system " doesn't want candidates who the public truly trust and admire.  The worst thing a government could foster is a united people that consequently is always an existential threat to said government.  It works much better if all the people have something to complain about to occupy their minds.  Even better if it's a two party system that switches the sides complaining like a tennis match.  Sports help exercise people's minds into blindly choosing a team to cheer on.
I hate the two party system. But it's what we got....

but biden is old

I'm not even concerned about Joe's non-viability as a candidate in the next presidential election. Way too far down the road. Forget it. It's off the table.

I'm very concerned that the man we saw absolutely crumble last night is the actual sitting president of the United States this morning, right this minute today, having the hard discussions, making the hard decisions. It's absolutely horrifying.

^ it's horrifying if he was a king

that didn't have the country's best interest at the forefront

his advisors do also

The only question that remains is will the position be retooled to KING?

Very true but I think Joe is and has been, mostly a marionette during his presidency. Perhaps he get to choose his preferred breakfast cereal, but that's as much rope as he's allowed.

That's why they won't drop him, full on acknowledgment of having a weak leader

Ruth Bader Biden.

So they're going to give the convicted felon who can't legally possess firearms the nuclear codes, again?

We are fucked. I am so sick of the Mount Rushmore of Trump enablers RBG, Hillary, Feinstein and Biden. He could of said he wasn't running after the midterms but instead we get this shit show and it was a fucking shit show. The most important job a President has is the ability to communicate and Joe can't do that.

They need to come up with a way to replace him but I'm not holding my breath. FUCK

^ weak leader that's done more than anyone else in your lifetime

and world leaders don't see sleepy joe that way

the biggest judicial power grab since 1803 has taken place in the last couple days

next president could possibly replace 3 supreme court justices

but i get it, he's old af

oh, and weak

"Trump came out strong but faded and became less coherent over time. His entire performance was either lies or rambling non-sequiturs. He lied so incessantly throughout the evening that it took CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale almost three minutes, speaking quickly, to get through the list. "-  Heather Cox Richardson

Weak leader is public perception and the reason the party won't pull the plug, not claiming its actuality... politics is managing optics, that "art of deception" thing someone once said...

who could have foreseen an already OLD guy getting OLDER? I mean WHO?

And ....will continue to get older like the rest of us.   But if this is where he is now...give it another year, let alone four.

He needs to bail, now.  He's already said he didnt want it.

Also...it's clear half the country doesn't care if trump lies.   So it doesn't matter if he lied once or 1000 times.

too old. bernie sanders is the only politician ive ever voted for in my life and it pains me to say it, but he shouldnt even be running for senate anymore. he needs to find a younger candidate who truly shares his values to endorse and pass the torch.

NYT - OPION -- THE EDITORIAL BOARD -- 06.28.2024

To Serve His Country, President Biden Should Leave the Race

(The editorial board is a group of opinion journalists whose views are informed by expertise, research, debate and certain longstanding values. It is separate from the newsroom.)

President Biden has repeatedly and rightfully described the stakes in this November’s presidential election as nothing less than the future of American democracy.

Donald Trump has proved himself to be a significant jeopardy to that democracy — an erratic and self-interested figure unworthy of the public trust. He systematically attempted to undermine the integrity of elections. His supporters have described, publicly, a 2025 agenda that would give him the power to carry out the most extreme of his promises and threats. If he is returned to office, he has vowed to be a different kind of president, unrestrained by the checks on power built into the American political system.

Mr. Biden has said that he is the candidate with the best chance of taking on this threat of tyranny and defeating it. His argument rests largely on the fact that he beat Mr. Trump in 2020. That is no longer a sufficient rationale for why Mr. Biden should be the Democratic nominee this year.

At Thursday’s debate, the president needed to convince the American public that he was equal to the formidable demands of the office he is seeking to hold for another term. Voters, however, cannot be expected to ignore what was instead plain to see: Mr. Biden is not the man he was four years ago.

The president appeared on Thursday night as the shadow of a great public servant. He struggled to explain what he would accomplish in a second term. He struggled to respond to Mr. Trump’s provocations. He struggled to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his lies, his failures and his chilling plans. More than once, he struggled to make it to the end of a sentence.  Mr. Biden has been an admirable president. Under his leadership, the nation has prospered and begun to address a range of long-term challenges, and the wounds ripped open by Mr. Trump have begun to heal. But the greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election.

As it stands, the president is engaged in a reckless gamble. There are Democratic leaders better equipped to present clear, compelling and energetic alternatives to a second Trump presidency. There is no reason for the party to risk the stability and security of the country by forcing voters to choose between Mr. Trump’s deficiencies and those of Mr. Biden. It’s too big a bet to simply hope Americans will overlook or discount Mr. Biden’s age and infirmity that they see with their own eyes.

If the race comes down to a choice between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden, the sitting president would be this board’s unequivocal pick. That is how much of a danger Mr. Trump poses. But given that very danger, the stakes for the country and the uneven abilities of Mr. Biden, the United States needs a stronger opponent to the presumptive Republican nominee. To make a call for a new Democratic nominee this late in a campaign is a decision not taken lightly, but it reflects the scale and seriousness of Mr. Trump’s challenge to the values and institutions of this country and the inadequacy of Mr. Biden to confront him.

Ending his candidacy would be against all of Mr. Biden’s personal and political instincts. He has picked himself up from tragedies and setbacks in the past and clearly believes he can do so again. Supporters of the president are already explaining away Thursday’s debate as one data point compared with three years of accomplishments. But the president’s performance cannot be written off as a bad night or blamed on a supposed cold, because it affirmed concerns that have been mounting for months or even years. Even when Mr. Biden tried to lay out his policy proposals, he stumbled. It cannot be outweighed by other public appearances because he has limited and carefully controlled his public appearances.

It should be remembered that Mr. Biden challenged Mr. Trump to this verbal duel. He set the rules, and he insisted on a date months earlier than any previous general election debate. He understood that he needed to address longstanding public concerns about his mental acuity and that he needed to do so as soon as possible.

The truth Mr. Biden needs to confront now is that he failed his own test.

In polls and interviews, voters say they are seeking fresh voices to take on Mr. Trump. And the consolation for Mr. Biden and his supporters is that there is still time to rally behind a different candidate. While Americans are conditioned to the long slog of multiyear presidential elections, in many democracies, campaigns are staged in the space of a few months.

It is a tragedy that Republicans themselves are not engaged in deeper soul-searching after Thursday’s debate. Mr. Trump’s own performance ought to be regarded as disqualifying. He lied brazenly and repeatedly about his own actions, his record as president and his opponent. He described plans that would harm the American economy, undermine civil liberties and fray America’s relationships with other nations. He refused to promise that he would accept defeat, returning instead to the kind of rhetoric that incited the Jan. 6 attack on Congress.

The Republican Party, however, has been co-opted by Mr. Trump’s ambitions. The burden rests on the Democratic Party to put the interests of the nation above the ambitions of a single man.

Democrats who have deferred to Mr. Biden must now find the courage to speak plain truths to the party’s leader. The confidantes and aides who have encouraged the president’s candidacy, and who sheltered him from unscripted appearances in public, should recognize the damage to Mr. Biden’s standing and the unlikelihood that he can repair it.

^ unless you typed this shit out yourself?!

You should read this response, but here is the biggest takeaway

The one thing that seems clear to me is that there’s only one Plan B and that’s Kamala Harris. I do not know any universe in which a party whose bedrocks are women and African-Americans does not split into open revolt if the Black woman vice president is passed over for someone else if the President is not up to the job. Wanting something else doesn’t matter. I don’t know any other Plan B that doesn’t involve magical thinking.

you fishin' now

Kamala has zero chance of being elected president. If Joe steps aside there will have to be an old school convention where someone is picked from a lst of those that throw their hats in a ring

I think Biden should step down. As stupid as debates are, he will not get past last night's performance......

I agree , woz.

It don't matter any more unless Joe bails.

And it wasn't even close.  If a scored debate DipShit Donnie would be disqualified.

CNN now officially Fox light.

Your country needs you more than ever Joe

do the right thing

The ex-president could not be more loathsome, nor more calculated. He must have an unparalleled payroll.

I appreciated reading this on Daily Kos:

This morning’s post on Letters from an American revealed Trump’s debate strategy. Of course he didn’t need to prep. He used a debate trick called the “Gish Gush” by which the debater spews a rapid fire stream of falsehoods in hopes that his opponent will take the bait & try to refute them, which Biden did.
Joe, if you’re listening, here’s the proper response: a deep breath followed by, “Where to start on this steaming pile?”

I admit that I walked away from the debate repeatedly and I may be alone here, but I don't think Biden's performance was nearly as damning of him as President as I'm reading here. I think it was a momentary occurrence (sort of like when you're public speaking while having a high temp and needing to throw up). I hope the DNC and public can back away from panic and look at the facts. The Biden presidency has been a pretty good one - is there really anyone else who can (and wants to) step in?

Establishment democrats are going to spend the next 6 months scream-pretending "it's not that bad", while the rest of us with a brain prepare for another horrific trump presidency.

we all saw what we saw, plainly and simply. Joe is very clearly overwhelmed and outmatched.

"hope" is not a course of action. This problem is not wine, it's not going to get better with age. The party needs to continue to move forward from here, not sideways or backwards out of disbelief. Is your loyalty to the past, or to the future?

This is an actual emergency.

I am dismayed that ANYONE would support Trump for ANY job, let alone President of the United States. He is so clearly a bully and a fraud. Contrary to his claims, in the eyes of the world, America was a laughing stock during his term.

Biden should have gracefully retired after his successful first term, but he is a stubborn old man, and still able to do the job. He had a bad night Thursday, but I will still vote for him in November, and the country will be fine. Should Trump somehow get back in, I think we are all in deep trouble.
